Haters

“Why,” Ellen asked me in an email this weekend, “are you such a hardass censor? Elon is a beacon right now, and you’re showing your silly Boomer hangups. Is your blog a free speech site, or are you just turning it into a giant echo chamber? So tired of your stupid ‘DELETED’ comments.”

It’s true. Musk just allowed Donald Trump back on Twitter, forgiving him for trying to overthrow democracy by denying an election result. It’s also true oodles of public platforms (like Reddit) let people scribble almost anything. Also true that every corner of social media these days is rife with ad hominems, unchallenged conspiracy theories, hate talk and F-bombs.

So what’s my problem, says Ellen? “What makes this place special?””

Fair question. I shall answer.

First, a few examples of comments you have not seen published, because I nuked them. On Friday we mentioned the new issue of risk-free Government of Canada bonds which will flow all proceeds to rebuilding Ukraine. That sparked dozens of comments like the one below from people who bought into a pro-Russian, anti-Biden, pro-Trump, anti-Ukraine conspiracy theory that took off a week ago. It has been utterly debunked, but that didn’t stop Rick from trying to post this:

The total contribution to the Ukraine government from the U.S. alone this year is ninety billion dollars. Most of that has not gone to the long suffering Ukrainian people but has been siphoned off by corrupt officials to off shore bank accounts and been invested in FTX.
FTX has in turn fed the fund to the Democratic party. The government of Ukraine is one of the worlds most corrupt, authoritarian countries. Why would anyone invest in Ukrainian bonds?

The US has given aid totaling $18.3 billion, not ninety. Most has been in the form of hardware, not cash. None went to FTX, which Ukraine briefly used to convert crypto gifts into hard currency for weapons. It’s 100% bogus, yet flying around the Internet unchecked. Except here.

Then last week we touched on real estate and immigration. News that newcomers will total 500,000 in 2025 has been too much for the xenopbobes and others who would turn away everyone if it made their own lives easier. So much blind hate, such as Adam tried to express here:

Garth that day will come when Blood and Honour will wait at the Pearson terminal and give a welcome party to the Pakis with a hail of lead and smoke.
There are too much of them here in Canada. We should be reducing the population of brown people to save the earth

Also vitriolic over the past months has been the anti-vaccine crowd, emboldened and legitimized (in their minds) by the support Pierre Poilievre gave the so-called Freedom Convoy that occupied Ottawa last winter. I delete or ghost them all. Selfishness and cowardice should not be celebrated, and the federal Conservatives must understand there was a reason 85% of Canadians willingly supported public health and saw the truckers as lawless thugs.

Then, this note from Josh a few days ago:

Give me $50,000,000 and liquidate your clients’ portfolio. You love your Dorothy don’t you?

The cops have that one. So does the cyber-threats team of my corporate partner. But, of course, the name is fake. The IP is a redirect. Just like this note of a few days earlier:

As a bully, you should really be careful who you pick a fight with and sick your puppies on- asshole. When it is dark and you leave your office, keep looking around, you may get a surprise.

Now, why would I say this? Because you are a bully and you pick fights and then you do not have the stomach to take it. You are an asshole – but then you know that.

This, Ellen, is why all the comments published on this blog are moderated. It’s why so many are never published, quietly scrubbed or sometimes labelled as deleted. Social media is corrupted, awash in unbridled prejudice and anger, reflecting the vulgarity and shallowness of our times. It all gets worse when populist politicians seek to tap into the sewer stream, amplifying and broadening public ignorance for the glory of themselves.

I spent years as a journalist, daily newspaper columnist, editor and TV talking head. Now we’ve lost the fact-based filter of mainstream media, replacing it with rumour, gossip and manipulation. Gone is commonality and a shared experience of absorbing or watching ‘the news.’ Instead, everybody can dwell in their own online box, hearing what they want, believing what they know, confirming what they feel and yelling that everything else is ‘fake’. This balkanization may be the most dangerous thing about our world. For example, 70% of Republicans are convinced Biden is not a legitimate president. Already this led to an insurrection. Do not take it lightly.

My well-exercised, nicely-sculpted delete finger cannot improve the world nor make the haters disappear. But it can keep one tiny, insignificant sliver of this space less odious.

About the picture: “Jude is my LabraDane rescue who carries a lot of anxiety over things as small as falling leaves  and vacuum cleaners,” writes LeeAnn. “His litter was abandoned on a reserve in Manitoba before making their way to Calgary’s ARF. When not fleeing from loud noises, Jude is my gentle giant and best friend in Nanaimo.  (Even on a beach walk you can see anxiety on his face.) Thank you for your wisdom, integrity, and the hope which you share daily with your readers. Feel free to use Jade’s photo.”

Why don’t all the Russian bots and melting snowflakes (like Ellen) make their own websites and publish whatever hate their shrivelled hearts desire?

It’s rhetorical! I know they are losers.

ouffff tough Gig Garth. Thanks for the resolve and posting daily despite it all.

I love this blog, check it daily, and continue to find it relevant and applicable. I only skim the comments for your (Garth’s) italicized replies – otherwise they’re mostly useless noise. SO, if it helps to prolong the lifespan of this blog to continue on, would be completely fine with having comments turned off.

Hey Garth,
I see that there is a development in Vancouver with eight towers being constructed for thousands of people. Two bedrooms start at 1.6 million. I know you said offshore money isn’t a factor in real estate, so it must be true, but who do you think are buying these units at 1.6 million a pop?

People who like mortgages, and downtown living. – Garth

#5 Bill on 11.20.22 at 2:39 pm

Keep up the good work Garth. There are many corners of the internet free of this nonsense & we’re glad yours is one of them.

Right on Garth!, there might be an opening at twitter for you soon!

#7 SOMETHINGS UP!! on 11.20.22 at 2:41 pm

I wish you could have censored the media when they told everyone IRAQ had weapons of mass destruction.

That caused the lives of so many innocent people and demolished the infrastructure and fabric of an entire country forever.

#8 KrisTea on 11.20.22 at 2:45 pm

What you indure (and provide -FOR FREE) is a gift to all those who come here and read your blog. I feel the debt many owe you for this gift goes unrecognized or ignored. For this reason, (as I am sure others who don’t often post will say), THANK YOU, for who you are, what you do, and the bar you set, for us fellow human beings to raise ourselves up and strengthen our moral codes.
I can only hope those who are guilty of such heinous acts get rightful consequences.

#9 chalkie on 11.20.22 at 2:46 pm

It just amazes me how bullies can be so brave in numbers but a scaredy cat when alone with no audience, or they can make a lot of noise behind a keyboard and not smart enough to figure out, they can be pin pointed on an IP address and arrested, there is dumb, dumber, and dumbest, that’s your typically bully, sad but true.

Yes, Elon has fired up Teflon Trump’s twitter account.

ELON MUSK is recognized as one of the smartest and brightest people in the world, with a very high intelligence quotient (IQ) but yet not smart enough to figure out that he is on a collision course with trouble that will wipe out is empire of wealth, why he needs to suck up to Teflon Trump, we have no idea.

Quote of the day: You need to trust, To surrender, To ask for guidance. Go within for the answers. They are within you. You have the answers. All you need to do is ask

Wow…just wow… I thought it was bad but…

Garth, you have enough support to close off these losers by simply making those that wish to comment, log in.

I am always amazed at how these people are so tough when posting hatred from redirected VPN’s.

Garth, you and your team have helped so many with this blog. I am amazed at how much you tolerate. But please, don’t let those that appreciate what you do, suffer because of the (more than few) bad apples.

#11 Shawn on 11.20.22 at 2:50 pm

Anyone even using the term main-stream media derisively gets no respect from me. I suppose that’s only at the top of the rabbit hole but still.

Imagine getting angry at what the CBC or CNN or some newspaper reports or does not report. If you don’t like those media outfits look elsewhere. But to get angry at them???

This blog has always been moderated. Garth sometimes disagrees with me but I can’t ever recall being DELETED.

#12 Grateful in Victoria on 11.20.22 at 2:52 pm

Wow – who knew!

Thanks for deleting the hate messages. I wish others had the decency and courage to do the same.
Elon Musk could have made history as a genius. Now, just another mad man.

#13 earthboundmisfit on 11.20.22 at 2:52 pm

Used to be that a child could only learn that kind of hatred at home. Tres sad. Note to self: Put and keep Trump on ignore.

#14 wallflower on 11.20.22 at 2:54 pm

Elon is a beacon? Not so according to a lot of chatter from employees at his other organizations. He is a visionary but no operator. Operationally engaged to the extent that he is, we all watch as he single-handedly implodes twitter. (Not that I care; just sayin’)

Ellen – please share your free blog link with all your free advice so that we can visit and carpet bomb you as we see fit.

How can anyone judge Garth for any actions he may take on any comments at his free-advice blog? His blog; his call.
(Pretty much like beacon Elon, right, Ellen?)

The meat is the blog. The comments are mostly the trash can.

People are disappointing; self-righteous and narcissistic.
I am not sure Ellen is a people. She is something else altogether.

And she did not have a fair question. It was loaded, biased, and self-opinionated. There was nothing fair about it.

She sounds exhausted from having to see all the DELETEDs. Why is she here?
Go AWAY Ellen. Reddit loves you.

#15 Bman on 11.20.22 at 2:55 pm

Thanks again for all that you do Garth. It’s terrible that you have to bear the burden of anonymous threats like that and wading through these idiots to provide free commentary to those of us who value having access to your voice. It’s one of the few reasonable ones out there these days and helps mute some of the crazy.

#16 David S on 11.20.22 at 2:56 pm

Amen, Garth!

I second the motion to turn off comments, if you so desire to. Unless you get something of value from them, who needs such negativity? Not I!

#17 The Original Jake on 11.20.22 at 2:57 pm

I am totally fine if comments are turned off. I read the first dozen or so and never go beyond that because that’s when the nutbars come out.

#18 Cici on 11.20.22 at 3:02 pm

Holy Crap, had no idea the Deletes were that bad!

I don’t remember Canada or the States ever being this polarized. It’s very sad.

Extreme racism is very dangerous, from whatever side it comes from; but make no mistake, there are extremist radicals and racists at every level, in all shades and tones, regardless of cloak or veil. But luckily, they are the minority. I have great faith in the majority.

The time is now for all leaders and people in power to put their foots down and stop fomenting it… ALL of it!

It’s time to foster commUNITY, commonality, ethics, hard work, integrity, freedom and prosperity in society. Not to deepen and widen the divides.

Death rate is plus or minus 300k per year in Canada
Many are older people leaving empty homes, condos, apartments, care home beds etc. after they die across Canada
Seniors in BC and Ontario are higher % of population than in other Provinces
More snowbirds are selling their canadian house – pocketing the cash – buying an American dream house for one tenth the price in Southern States to leave for fall and winter away in the sun. Using the money they save to enjoy their retirement.
Houses and condos are oversupplied, more people trying to get rid of them now as the light bulbs are going off with all the early retirements and lay offs
Canadian housing is doomed to crash.
Immigrants are couples with kids – so no big take up of all then empty homes and condos.
If you want to get rich and save money rent or live in your parent’s basement

In place for only Two Weeks. To Flatten the Curve. Honest, only two weeks wink wink. You can trust me.

— If risking indoor dining I will bring my own plexiglass and plastic sheeting to hang between my table.
A proven Infection Control Method.

— Keeping a Scientific curfew of 10pm with no alcohol served after 9pm. A small sacrifice to Stop The Spread.

— Keeping Hygiene Bubbles for optimal Health.
6 personal friends
6 co-workers
6 family members.
For a perfect 6-6-6 bubble matrix.

— Lining up outside the grocery stores in the bitter winter weather keeping 6-6-6 apart from others. Until it is safe to go inside when all the Corvid particulates have had time to de-atomize. Science you know.

— No non-essential good purchases on my shopping trips. Needless to say I will be walking down the aisles one way only. To Stay Safe.

— Quarantining all mail and packages for 24 hours after spraying with a mixture of 25% bleach, 25% peroxide 25% Distilled Water, 25% Holy Water. (One cannot be too safe).

(Ok I admit it the last one is a joke as nobody gets home mail delivery these days, it has been “optimized” into a Community Mailbox, trudging distance away. Tax dollars at work yo.)

Or the other broker that used to wear a Santa Claus suit and ride a donkey into downtown Vancouver every Christmas Eve and tie it up outside several local pubs as he made his rounds?
Ah the 1980’s and early 90’s were full of classic VSE screwballs.

Keep up the good work Garth! Keep deleting those comments that do not deserve to be aired. When I read some of these deletions it makes me sick to realize there are people out there like this. You lift my spirit and help me to stay connected to the ideas that are necessary for a healthy docracy.

#24 Chris on 11.20.22 at 3:11 pm

Garth, I read often. Sometimes we’ve disagreed and I’ve written to you. Sometimes the comments make it and sometimes they haven’t. Bottom line: this is your blog. Do what you want with it. The same people crying freedom to say what they want deny you the same opportunity to do what you want with your site. You’re clear on your rules. Don’t bother giving time to this crap. There’s nothing stopping them from making their own blog and doing their own thing.

Over the last 10 years, I’ve disagreed many times – and even made me mad on occasion. But I keep coming back – as do they. Thanks for what you do. 99% of us really appreciate it.

#25 just a dude on 11.20.22 at 3:13 pm

Garth, your site is hardly an “insignificant sliver”. Please continue to delete away as you see fit, for all the great reasons you posted. And one day, if you ever get tired of moderating, please considering canning the comment section altogether but, please, please keep sharing your thoughts on here.

I’ll say it once again, thank you for all that you (and your team) do. So greatly appreciated by a good many of us who have been faithfully reading your wise words and balanced views for many years.

#26 Well said on 11.20.22 at 3:14 pm

Having played by the rules all my life and paying the people that know what they are talking about to assist and advise me, I am now happily retired, financially independent, and sitting in a fabulous restaurant in Madrid, enjoying a wonderful meal and first class service.

Where do all these Malcontents come from? When Marshall McCluhan spoke of a global village, did he implicitly mean there would be global village idiots? Why does our esteemed blog host not use commas? So many questions.

Yes, social media has allowed us to create a royal mess. How do we fix this? I don’t know but more wine might help!

Peeps are very brave with their social media. Chicken sh!t is what they are.

I’d advise against it you fools.
Social media = disaster.

Anyway on a more serious note. I just watched Australia 60min Taiwan on Youtube
I highly recommend it.
If China takes it…it will be the beginning of the end of the world as we know it.
As an Engineer I’m very aware of the importance of chipsets and democracy.
And there’s Trudeau always rubbing elbows with Xi.
That’s unbelievable to me. They are bullies and abusive beyond belief. This country should be distance itself from that awful authoritarian regime.
People and govs need to get behind Taiwan before its to late. Your future depends on it and you can take that to the bank.

If you’re curious what a lack of moderation looks like, try Reddit, or 4 chan, or 8 chan. It’s unintelligible.

Also a social media site moderating content has nothing to do with free speech. If you said something like the quotes Garth showed in this post and you were arrested and thrown in prison, for example, that would be a violation of your freedom of speech. As long as that’s not happening (and it’s not), Twitter, Garth’s blog, the media, “cancel culture” etc. are all fine. None of them are violations of one’s freedom of speech.

I am old enough to remember the advent of the interwebs as a main stream method to exchange information.

“You don’t need a LOT of people dropping dead, porn-covered rats into the communal well. Just one will suffice to ruin the well. And the nature of the Internet is that it encompasses Everybody, so suddenly instead of just one slightly furtive local Rat Guy, there’s a Vibrant, Self-Reinforcing Community of hundreds of Rat Guys wrapping dead rats in pornography and dumping them in wells. If you don’t build a dead-rat filter onto the well, it’s a matter of time until someone deposits a rat in there. – This is why you can’t have nice things on the internet.”

So nice we hope to post it twice:

Musk’s 12 hour poll that resulted in Trump being reinstated on Twitter got me pondering.

Google up “Twitter fake followers audit” for what might be my source.

Low # fake followers is 25%. Medium is 41%. High is 57%.

Elon has 70% fake followers.

So out of 115 million followers fully 81 million are fake, leaving him with 34 million actual, real, responding and posting followers.

Really sorry you have to deal with people like this – and me, for that matter. Definitely the two – four dudes in love with themselves (and each other) that post TOO regularly on this blog…

People will hate, which gives voice to their, actually really boring lives. Their pathways are set. And haven’t had enough hardship, hard work or experiences in their lives to make a comparison to anything/body/genre/hug….these are becoming more and more set with every word they search for that echos their own sentiment…they will die unfulfilled…and change nothing. This to me is sad. (I’ll get over it)

I am constantly around all ethnicites with many religious backgrounds and cultural differences and I see good…definitely morally better than the people whose comments you delete…and, for the most part, way more excepting (with more interesting backgrounds and imagination) then the people I’d meet in say Kelowna…or Russia…

Didn’t we all used to be black?. . . . . . . . .

Not trying to be confrontational or a dick…but lack of experiences is dangerous egg to sit on these days….thank the church, eh boomers?

Let the frowners frown…and the preachers preach..makes me laugh…
haters find connection with other haters…their choice. I respect that. Not my bag though….too little hugs…

I also respect that its your blog, G. F’em…I’m sure Amazon has an upgrade to that delete finger that’ll send a shock to the comments author..hehe..

A FORGOTTEN HISTORY LESSON.
For too many years, the world has been a wonderful playground with free money for almost everyone. All our assets reached for the sky and we spent and spent even more. When there was nothing left to spend we borrowed and borrowed even more to keep the “Roaring 20’s Roaring.”
However nothing lasts forever and now a chilly wind blows across our playground. Our Central Bankers in unison have suddenly stirred from their years of delusional sleep and are now fearful for their own survival. Oh, what to do ???
In a stroke of sheer brilliance they have embarked on a radically new course of action. Withdraw liquidity and raise interest rates. The whole point of the Fed hiking interest rates is to slow the economic growth thereby reducing their previous goal of promoting inflation. As such the risk of a recession rises as higher rates do indeed curtail economic activity. Thereby dampening the flames of inflation. Brilliant.
Repeat for slow learners, Since earnings remain correlated to economic growth, earnings will decline as rates ensue upwards. Much like night follows day. For those who pay attention to the hard lessons of history, what goes up will come down. Grasshopper, the Roaring 20’s have come to a completely predictable end. The playground is now closed. Bottom line, logic would indicate, “Fair Value” for the market will be substantially lower. I’m just a fly on the wall taking you behind the scene.

Money going into Real Estate?

If Joe builds a house for $500k and sells it to Frank for $1 million, has the extra $500,000 gone into real estate or into Joe’s bank account?

There is a big difference between wealth and money. There is a ton of wealth in real estate. Money, not so much. Money remains in bank accounts.

I don’t know why governments aren’t willing to make the owner of every website liable for the content therein. Allowing the large social media sites the ability to hook their visitors on anger and envy without having to deal with the consequences is completely equivalent to allowing tobacco companies to pretend their products are healthy and fun. It’s time to hold them accountable.

Garth,

One correction… you state: “85% of Canadians willingly supported public health”.

That is factually incorrect. We don’t know how many canadians “willingly” supported public health. There were many individuals who got vaccines “unwillingly”. I know many people who got the shot because they would have lost their job, house, etc. if they hadn’t. Would be like if I held a gun to your head and said “Eat this pile of poo or else you die” and you eat the poo, and then said “You willingly ate the poo. You had a choice. You didn’t HAVE to eat the poo”.

I’m not saying I am pro or anti vaccine, merely that to suggest 85% of canadians were happy to get the vaccine is not true. The number would have been a lot less if it had not been required to keep your job.

I worked in the same building as Eira Thomas and her Company( Diavik?) when they announced the diamond strike in the NWT….
I thought it was a scam. :(

I also new Ross Beatty from PanAmerican Silver when he sold a ton of shares to Bill Gates.
Ross took that infusion of cash and bought several copper mines in South America…. which he then flipped to the Chinese about 3 years later for quadruple the price.
The most junior of staff in those Copper companies were buying houses with cash after those deals.

Needless to say I didn’t :(

I think what’s happening is that with lower home purchases thus fewer mortgages, growth in revenues will go down – I mean you know, not across the board but still down. I think that’s what the market is assessing. Hope they make up the revenue growth loss fast (or patient in your case).
++++++++++++++
I think that you are probably right on that point. But i think the banks will make up the losses on the spreads and higher fees. They generally use about 50ish % of their revenue to fund the divs and the other 50% to fund and grow the biz so i think the divs are solid.

“fact-based filter of mainstream media”, ha ha, that’s a good one.

“If you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed. If you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed.” – commonly attributed to Mark Twain but I guess there is some debate about that. He did coin the term “misinformation” though:

“Often, the surest way to convey misinformation is to tell the strict truth.”
—Pudd’nhead Wilson’s New Calendar

“Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day”

– Thomas Jefferson according to QuoteInvesigator.com

https://quoteinvestigator.com/2016/12/03/misinformed/

Remember folks, “the news” is there to make money. If it were the case that the facts (if such a thing exists) made money, then they would print that. But it doesn’t so they don’t.

Anyway this blog is at it’s best when it stays off politics. Everyone knows not to bring politics up at dinner. That and religion are two things that can only be discussed by true believers of the same persuasion. In any other instance, you can’t even get everyone to agree what the facts are. Heck, you can’t even get them to agree to the same definitions for words.

Man alive, people who are actually thankful for censorship. Unbelievable. “Thank you for blocking and protecting me from what my puny brain, fragile ears/eyes and infantile feelings, can’t handle Garth.”

It is your blog Garth, so run the comments section as you see fit. We have the choice to accept that or not bother with the blog or comments section.

But…

My 2 cents, inflation adjusted, .002 cents…

Deletion, canceling and silencing is censorship.
Censorship is dangerous plain and simple. Sorry but I don’t trust anyone, not even my own mother, to tell me what I can or cannot read, hear, see or say. I can make up my own mind as to whether someone has a valid point, or they belong in a rubber room, thank you. That right should be made available to any adult in any free and democratic society. Of course there are grossly extreme, and l mean undeniably extreme exceptions that without doubt, promote seething hatred or gratuitous and pointless images and messages. That should not and has not ever been tolerated in the modern free world. But overwhelmingly, censorship, is always laiden with motives, angles and agenda and only belongs in dictatorships. It’s ridiculous that someone’s viewpoint on a topic should be interpreted by any one person or persons, as being acceptable or not acceptable for everyone else too read or hear then judge for themselves. And let’s not forget taking that extra step further by labeling anyone with an opposing or controversial view, as “anti this” or “anti that” or suffering from one of the millions of new BS phobias, based on 3 sentences.

I’ll go and crawl under my bridge now.

We have hiked in many of the parks in BC and Alberta and Washington and more recently in Switzerland, Ireland and Newfoundland. @Nonplused

“Remember folks, “the news” is there to make money. If it were the case that the facts (if such a thing exists) made money, then they would print that. But it doesn’t so they don’t.”

Do you realize how silly this statement makes you seem? Perhaps if you get your news from RT & Fox this statement proves true but for the rest – things like common sense and ethics intervene. Not every news outlet operates like Alex Jones.

Your dentist is there to make money too – does she reccomend replacing all your teeth if they are healthy?

Does your doctor reccomend drugs and tests you do not need just to fill up their balance sheet?

I read the G&M and New York Times daily and they do not make up the news. Some reporters have a bias and they get things wrong. When they do, they print retractions/corrections. How often has your boy Trump successfully sued the NYT? Never?

And while I am here – you completely misrepresented what happened with the polish missile strike story. Here is what happened at the NYT:
Tuesday at 11 AM I noticed their story of the Polish missile strike. They reported that the AP was reporting that russian made missles had struck & killed 2 people in Poland close to the Ukraine border. The AP story quoted an anonymous source in US intelligence that said the missiles originated from Russia. The NYT reported that they could not confirm this.
6 hours later when I was leaving work the NYT updated the story to say that US Intelligence could not confirm where the missile had originated but there was a good chance they were Ukraine anti-missile defense missiles and did not originate in Russia. Biden said this as well.
Wednesday morning AP printed a correction saying it was believed the missiles that landed in Poland were fired by the Ukrainians as part of their anti-missile defenses.
Why the confusion? The missiles that landed in Poland were Russian s-300 missiles part of Ukraine’s anti-missile defense system. On Tuesday Russia fired close to 100 missiles into Ukraine (targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure), a large number of which were S-300 missiles.

Funny how you ignore the known facts when it does not suit your narrative. But then again, you prattled on about a stolen election for 3 months.

Maybe someone should gift you a subscription to the NYT this Christmas so you are better read.

It may be true that there is no such thing as a free lunch.. but dude, try not to be out to lunch so often and maybe comment with a little integrity.

I worry, Trump gave a a glimpse of what happens when you put populism in charge in the modern world of people believing anything they read online (especially if it conforms to their bigotry, appeals to their cowardliness, or selfishness).. but I fear he is just the tip of this stuff.

I’d be concerned if it was just a USA thing, but this stuff seems to be a global phenomenon, even Canada (which, as someone who was born in UK, always seemed to be the last bastion of common sense), has fallen down the rabbit hole with PP, someone I genuinely fear will gain power* (especially when you look at his track record over the years).

I don’t really like the way the world generally seems to be going. And the comments you posted, clarifies that for me. Thanks internet! And to think, we thought the global sharing of knowledge, would make people smarter..

* = note to dim people, I have zero problem with a Conservative government, they’ve been good for my bottom line over the years.. it’s the likes of PP that concern me. Or, more rather, his keenness to just jump on bandwagons with the loudest people.

There’s another aspect to Ellen’s questions omitted by your responses. Her misunderstanding is inherent in her question: Is your blog a free speech site?

Well, no. Garth’s blog is his site. Full stop. Garth says as much in the footer: “THE VIEWS EXPRESSED ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHOR, GARTH TURNER…” Ellen should note: free speech isn’t a blog, it’s a right. And media exist by its authority, with all manner of agendas, standards and restrictions, through the efforts of those not necessarily bound by their readers’ mores.

So don’t blame Garth for his pathetic blog. Blame it on free speech.

193 Penny

Hey Penny. Thanks for the link. From the article:

“But with TD and CIBC variable-rate mortgages, borrowers may be allowed to go past the trigger rate and stick with payments that don’t even cover the full amount of the interest owed, up to a certain threshold. The unpaid portion of the interest is deferred and added to the mortgage principal and the borrower’s loan balance grows, or negatively amortizes.

Both banks said that, in such a scenario, they pro-actively engage with customers to outline their options and help them choose the one that might best suit their needs. They also said they couldn’t provide comment on how frequently this is occurring because of coming earnings releases.”

I think many of us saw these things coming. The banks do not want to own houses. “Flexibility” is the new buzz word. Do what they can to keep the customer paying something. I like how they change the “trigger point”
to a “certain threshold”. Just a new trigger point of course. Easiest just to lower the interest rate by a half point for a time period, all to be re-visited later.

Hey, BNS is up. Doesnt matter so much to me, as it’s the dividend I want.

Carry on!

“Why trivialize the difficulty of others?”
———————————————————-

I see several comments in response to my Mt. Benson post. Thank you to all. As my intent was to highlight perspective, Sailo’s comment comes closest.

What is/was a walk in the park for some, is a good hike,
a vigorous workout, or an arduous adventure for others.
—————————-
That’s a good point.
But one should always try to make it a “walk in the park”.
If you’re huffing and puffing, you should first get into some basic physical shape
Since I’m retired, I’m in a much better shape than I was when I was working.
But you gotta work on it.
Walking 10 thousand steps a day is almost a minimum to get there.
I found that playing pickle ball raises your mental awareness, as you are required to react quickly and make instant decisions.

Thanks for your continued hard work in moderating this forum. I don’t even open the comments section most of the time. The value comes from the blog post.

Noticed that our final CCB freebie hit the bank account last week. Thus ends the ridiculous Trudeaubux gravy train here at the bunker complex. After years of trolling Trudeau fanboi’s with utterly grotesque hand out amounts, I figure I should close the book with a final chapter:

First, not once have I ever made a manoeuvre specifically to goose our CCB payments. It turns out that if your situation produces a big tax return, you get a big a CCB handout as well due to it being based on net income. Don’t ask me why they did it this way. I always couched my dollar figures with “a bro and I” for good reason. Between our two families, over ~7 years of Trudeau leadership:

5 kids, large age range, two adopted.
One highly malleable income.
4 incomes total, 2 of them public sector.
Multiple outstandingly profitable PR RE sell offs, which resulted in:
Massive multi-person, multi-year RRSP pumps.
5 figure charitable donations, both families, every year.
Significant tax deductions due to education choices.
5 figure tax returns for both families almost every year resulting from the above.

Almost a quarter Mil in returned taxes and handouts total combined under Trudeau. Both families 6 figure incomes on and off over this time. Neither needed, or asked for something like the CCB. We should have not been included. It’s a bungled program top to bottom, well favouring those who don’t require the support. Both families budgeted for having kids right from the get-go. It’s OK, you can laugh. I’ve been laughing for years already. Neither family is rich, incomes varied considerably during Trudeau’s tenure.

No trickery, no fraud, no gaming the system. Just living life as normal, and being generous with the proceeds thereof. That’s it. Not a single illegal move made, taxes done by hired professionals every year.

Once again, childless couples and singles should be screaming about this. I’m just here letting y’all know what’s going on in post-Trudeau Canada.

Oh my, Home Capital +56% today. Early xmas present. Guess I’ll buy lunch for the office.

+388% since 2017 purchase a few weeks before Buffett bailout. Must be living right. This stuff happens a lot.

Could that be short covering? Maybe time to take some off the table.

Saw this ad which rubs in how bad housing has gotten here in Canada, a good way to sell a used vehicle :( https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/calgary/2002-honda-odyssey-7-passenger-van-in-great-shape/1641360778

@Ellen
I can confirm that I do not always agree with Garth and I do challenge him. I do so respectfully and if I post stats, back it up. Garth has never censored me… so if others are getting censored, as evidenced by his examples, I’m okay with that. It makes for a better, inclusive site. Thank you Garth.

Garth can do whatever he wants with his blog and doesn’t owe you free speech. I hope that the next thing he wants to do is get rid of this stupid comments section. I came here for the free advice, not for you losers.

There are plenty of 15 year old “finance gurus” on tiktok and youtube that you may find you have more in common with.

#205 VladTor on 11.21.22 at 1:44 pm

Garth,
I am very angry with you.

That’s why:

I returned from the pool, but while I was swimming I thought that I did not deserve just a PENALTY BOX. I have been reading this blog for probably over 5 years and deserve more respect as a veteran.

I categorically demand a PLATINUM PENALTY BOX ! Well, at least GOLD PENALTY BOX !

I hope that my request is not excessive and I will find support from other bloggers in this.

Home Capital and Buffett

Like we both agree:

“Always assume that Buffett is correct”

Buffett bailed out Home Capital in Spring 2017. This was after it suffered a run on the bank after some of its broker network had falsified incomes.

Buffett sold fairly quickly at a profit after shareholders later snubbed him on a proposed second half of his investment. With only a half position it was not worth Buffett having to give it any more thought. Also he does not like being snubbed.

Thank you Garth and team for this site. I read it regularly and enjoy the sanity from your posts. I never read the comments as I see very little value in the nuttiness of many of the postings…hate etc….so please keep on deleting or shut off comments entirely. This is my only time posting…and my last but just wanted to support your comments. Cheers!

Dear Garth
I am never surprised as the depths people will go when it comes to bigotry and aiming their ire at less fortunate ones. The signs of civil society going through these gyrations have reached a dangerous point. Evidence is all around us … but the shameful disguises people wear on the internet and horrible sites just speaks to our apathy and disregard to history and past generations that have sacrificed for something greater. I just finished Bob Woodward’s “Trump Tapes”, I had to hear his voice to get on tape to realize how twisted his narcissism and pathology goes… and how far people are willing to twist their core beliefs for such a sick and destructive individual he is… Garth your march towards reason and rationale is appreciated and recognized by the vast .. silent majority… we all need to speak clearly, slowly and firmly when addressing these bullies!! Keep it coming man…we all can drown out the toxicity …
