The protector

Okay, I know the world’s burning. But here’s our theme of the week: it’s all about you. Not them.

In your own life, actions taken will be far more consequential than events swirling outside. That includes a global pandemic. Political turmoil. Rogue Kenworths. Or the economic stuff – inflation, interest rates, taxes and markets.

Happiness may be too lofty a goal. So aim instead for contentment. Get a few loyal friends. Find the right partner. Stay married. Learn to share, have empathy and be patient. Adopt an animal. Let it teach you to live in the moment and temper your human urge to fret and control. Time is the greatest asset you’ve got. You can always earn, borrow or steal some money. Time? Nah. It’s finite.

Having accepted that, a life without enough money means discontent. You can be young and poor and joyous. But age and penury is an awful mix. Thus, worry not about the generation you were born into, but how you can make the best possible use of the days of your life.

That brings us to Tuesday.

In an era of change, volatility and rapacious government, one of the best possible actions is to escape – or at least seriously defer – taxation. The best tool Canadians have is the RRSP. And Tuesday is the deadline. If you act before then, $27,830 can be deducted from taxable income for 2021. It could save you ten grand or more. And from that moment on (until 71), the funds grow in a taxless environment. The deliciousness of that will only augment as the screws tighten on Canadians going forward.

Herewith are my three fav RRSP strategies among all the possible ones we’ve parsed here over the years.

First, the contribution in kind.
It’s possible to make a contribution without having extra money sitting around. Existing assets may be transferred into a registered retirement plan. That immediately allows the value of the transfer to be deducted from your 2021 taxable income, and all future growth will not be taxed until far in the future allowing for more compounding and swelling. In essence, you’re selling yourself assets you already own and getting paid to do it.

Of course, the transfer is a taxable event so any increase in the value of the things contributed will be treated as a capital gain. Any losses will not be deductible in future. But you know what the No.1 investment holding in Canada is? Right. GICs. They can be used as a contribution in kind without a big tax hit while all future interest (until you invest in something far better upon maturity) will be untaxed. Plus, claim the deduction. The GIC’s fair market value will include accrued interest and you probably need to move the thing into a self-directed account with the same bank. Until you escape.

Second, the spousal plan.
Earn more than s/he does? Then this will allow for some serious familial income-splitting. Open a spousal plan with your squeeze as annuitant. Contribute into it up to your own contribution limit (18% of earned income, to the $27,830 mark). Although the funds go into an account your sweetie owns, you claim the entire amount as a deduction from your own higher income.

How does this income-split?

In retirement. Instead of having all registered funds in one person’s name, taxed at their marginal rate at time of withdrawal, the money can be split. The tax rate is likely lower. All good. Additionally, the person making more and contributing to the spousal plan, gets a fat tax break while working. The lower-income, less-taxed spouse takes the money out at their own rate. Big win.

Remember that funds must be kept in the spousal plan for at least three years. Any withdrawals before then will be attributed back to the contributor and lumped on his/her/theirs/its annual taxable income. Unless you’re having a big fight, don’t.

Finally, the targeted hit.
The key thing to remember about RRSPs is the richer you are the greater the benefit. High-income earners net a bigger tax break than ordinary schmucks, since contribution reduce taxable income. The higher that income, the worse the marginal tax rate and the more profound the savings. So, in theory, it would make sense to save up RRSP contributions earned in the early years of a career to zap taxes later on when you become CEO.

But that would mean eschewing the tax-free compounding aspect of a registered retirement plan for years, if contributions were not made. So it’s a good thing people can shovel money into an RRSP, see those funds invested for taxless growth, and still save up the contribution room for the purpose of reducing taxable income.

This is because there’s no rule saying an RRSP contribution needs to be declared and deducted in the year it’s made. The money can swell, bloat and multiply happily within the plan and you can save the deduction for a higher-income year. Or maybe when you sell something and need to offset a capital gain. Or retire and commute a pension with a taxable portion.

Just three examples of simple actions with clear benefits. Beats the hell out of bitching.

JP, the dumb guys smart person.
like rogan and alex jones, JP certainly knows how to make money off the rubes though.

Yep, grift. Just like the televangelists. A patina of moralizing coating a core of greed. It’s no surprise that elements of the right (very broadly speaking) that eschew education as a “liberal” thing are also subject to, and the source of, all kinds of grift. I actually think JP has less grift in him and more power intoxication. But, the result is the same. Unfortunately, there’s an endless supply of grumpy middle aged men (incels and MGTOWs among them) who will pay to see him until he’s too old to take up the mic.

Obviously it’s tough to predict the future, but it occurs to me that the government is likely to view ‘anybody with investments’ as ‘the wealthy’, thus ripe to be taxed more.

Do you reckon Ms. Freeland will include taxing the TFSA (possibly if it does more than x transactions a month, or grows too much) and diddling with the tax rate on the RRSP in the budget? I have to imagine the amount of tax-free income sitting in TFSAs would put a tidy dent in the deficit if they could tax it, and that something can be done to collect returns on the RRSP, no?

Contentment? Oh, man…Content? I can be content out the yin-yang…but where is the fun in that? You only got one shot, right?

Do, do, do…let’s go! Contentment comes later. Like with most of the people who comment here; contentment is commenting 50x….b/c that’s all they got (how could one infer less?)

Learn what makes you happy, sad…get those neuro systems working. Strive for more…set the bar…then set it again! Komm schon, Leute…do you think it was LUCA’s purpose to be content?

Then, when you’re too tired to search anymore…start an argument or complement or give….

I digress…sorry, couldn’t get past contentment. I’m sure the rest of the post was very informative.

With Spring well on its way and the resuming of outdoor grilling season I have a couple of tips for all of you all.

2 lbs of ground chuck will give you 5.3 6oz burger patties. So take 5 softly rounded teaspoons of pancake mix and incorporate that before forming your patties.

Your burgers will actually fluff while on the grill.

Tip #2: Salt is a curing agent and as such should not be incorporated into the ground beef mix. It messes with the protein strands (as it is supposed to) and that gives your burger patty a sausage like mouth feel, a spring or bounce back in the bite. You want that lux burger mouthfeel just leave the salt out.

Add in all the minced onion, garlic you want, use powdered onion or garlic, sure. But say no to salt.

Same advice goes for meatballs, meatloaf, etc. Unless you want that sausage like bite to it.

That .3 of burger mix from above? That is for the dog.

Re Emergencies Act

Is it like the 3 wishes kind of fairy tale thing where you trick the genie by using the first wish to give you unlimited wishes?

Apparently the oversight committee will not be given access to so-called classified secret intelligence, so in what way can they exercise oversight in a legitimate way ‘in accordance with the Charter’, as the Act provides?

Senate – if you ever wish to go down in Canadian history as justify8ng your place there, think carefully before you vote

‘Castle’ has quite the snozz!

One of the many valuable nuggets of information I’ve garnered from this blog is that an RRSP contribution need not be claimed in the year it is made. While that flexibility isn’t something most folks would want or need to take advantage of, for those who could benefit it remains a handy tool in the kit of future financial moves to keep the tax hit as low as legally possible.

Thanks for the tips Ustabe. I’m skeptical about adding leavening to a burger, but will try it.

I’ll build on your advice about salt.

In bread baking, the same effect applies and timing the addition of salt is important. Here, chewiness is desired, so salt is essential (also for flavour and colour of the crumb). Salt interacts with the protein in flour to change and assist in gluten development that is critical for entrapping fermentation gasses.

But, the salt inhibits some of the fermentation activity, so the addition is best left for after an initial autolyse wherein the yeasts and bacteria get a chance to establish a foothold in the dough. Talking naturally leavened breads here. I always add salt after an initial hour of fermentation and usually in a mix of 50g water to the 25g salt (for a 1kg flour batch of bread).

Anyhow, I’m mostly vegetarian on climate change impacts grounds, but we have some ground beef in the fridge. And the sun’s out.

In the next 6 months, there is a possibility, that Governments, will introduce Wage and Price controls, starting, in the USA. This will be quickly adopted by Canada’s Leaders as it will become necessary. It sadly may be the best way forward, to address the enormous increase to the Global Money supply, and also realistically permit the less advantaged countries in the world, to catch up with Vaccinations, and Covid future challenges. Kind of a buy some time strategy, I hope that is co managed, with small regular preannounced, incremental increases to Global Reserve currency interest rates.

I am the least racist person there is anywhere in the world. – Donald Trump

Faron, did you ever see the 1978 American science-fiction horror film Invasion of the Body Snatchers? I am joking, of course, but I am at a loss to explain the transformation of the Republican Party from what was once a reasonably sane conservative body to what is now a group of Trumpian, alt-right, pro-Putin, QAnon-following, knuckle-dragging, whackadoodle nutjob conspiracy theorists. Oh—just a minute—there’s a knock at my door.

Yeah. It’s hard to believe that the conservative party in the US was once the party of Lincoln and serious constitutional thought and actual rights. It shocks me and I don’t have much more involvement in Canadian politics than regular voting. For someone like Garth who gave blood, sweat and tears to the conservative party it must hurt far more. Ech.

In my view, it’s directly tied to changes in the media landscape that came about when Reagan era Republicans repealed the fairness doctrine from the FCC. Combine that with the introduction of cable news and a 24hr cycle and manufacturing dissent among viewers and listeners was critical for business and now on more solid legal ground. Rush Limbaugh, Fox News and Citizens United have all added to this base.

What shocks me is how fast this erosion is happening in Canada. I pin that on social media acting as an accelerant.

I’ll plug the Alberta Party here for those in that province. They are based on fiscal conservative principles and smaller government, but are socially progressive. I have family involved who are utterly rational and have positive outlooks and whom I admire not the least because they treat their gender non-conforming adult children with care and compassion and understanding despite having very traditional backgrounds. The party probably wouldn’t get my vote if I lived there, but they would garner my attention and I think they are a middle ground that the CPC should move toward.

Oil… up.. up she goes. Boy that Putin is pretty shrewd with recognizing the breakaway republics thereby giving him the moral high-ground and rhetorical ammo to defang the arbiters of freedom, democracy and self determination. If Biden had kept Trunq’s energy policies in place the EU would have a hope but as Russia gets richer by the day the closer the time comes when the EU will relent. No sanctions will force Putin to negotiate as Russia is mostly self sufficient in major industries now. Moreover, I figure Putin does not care if you freeze. See ‘elections’ do have consequences.

VSD conditions (intersex, for the ideologically blunted) are SEX SPECIFIC. CAIS, the example you gave, is a male XY specific VSD, just as Turner’s Syndrome is XX female specific. CAIS males, like Caster Semenya, can father children.

That someone requires more than a glance to determine their sex in no way results in a third, fourth, or fifth sex. 99.98% of the time, sex is correctly observed at birth. Outliers merely reinforce the binary.

Wolffian or Mullerian development is what determines sex, not the appearance of genitals. What gamete do these unicorns produce? Sperg? Spegg? That some people are unhappy with their sex doesn’t negate the binary nature of it.

Arguing that someone whose atypical karyotype marks them as something other than male or female is like arguing that people with the chromosomal mutation that produces Down Syndrome are not humans. Nice one. Maybe quit while you’re behind.

“Do you reckon Ms. Freeland will include taxing the TFSA (possibly if it does more than x transactions a month, or grows too much) and diddling with the tax rate on the RRSP in the budget? ————————

Bona fide concerns IMO rook, but JT and CF must “sell” it as taxes on the “rich”. Here is what I could see happening:

– lifetime limit on TFSA (because only the “rich” have full TFSAs)
– RRSP contribution to become tax credit instead of deduction from income set at about the $130-160k
range. Income over that subject to full tax as those
people are “rich”
– Lower limit on pension income splitting so that large
pension holders pay more because they are “rich”.
– Not increasing OAP clawback from current $79k+/-
threshold because seniors making more than that are……rich!
– Cap gains inclusion to 75%.

Problem with the last one is that not everyone who receives cap gains are rich. So maybe a small yearly
limit on cap gains at the current 50% inclusion rate,
with no carry forward allowed. This could create a
small but steady tax stream.

An increases across the board to current tax rates.

Death (and taxes) by 1000 cuts.

I hope JT and CF dont read this blog…..

Off topic…well, Ukraine crisis.

Lots of jet engine noise over Pordenone today. While looking online to see who it was I spotted a Cdn MIL aircraft flying just west of Milano, a CL60:

I got way too interested…

Suffice to say, busy little plane. It was flying into Nice from Brussels (above image) and then on to Athens:

That plane has been around the block the last couple of days:

C17 in the last 2 days:

Nothing on the Orion (callsign disabled) but I have a good idea of where it’s headed (currently flying over Province, France in a SE direction):

Emergencies Act Revoke

So for all of you conspiracy, New World Order, government’s enslaving us all types, the EA has been revoked after it did its job.

No it won’t be used to freeze all our bank accounts if we contribute to non-woke charities, no will not be used to imposed curfews, no it won’t be used to steal your f-150s to carry troops around.

It was used to end the illegal hostage taking of downtown Ottawa and blocking major trade routes with the US. And most people I talk to think it should have been used sooner.

Threat ended and the EA is no longer needed.

The inept Trudeau and his Liberal minions finally got it right after fumbling the matter for 3 weeks.

Hopefully he will act sooner next time a vanishing small minority of antivaxxers illegally try to impose their fake science views of the world on Canadian citizens.

You conspiracy, government enslavement adherents……

Definitely need the acct to sort these messes out.

Now my understanding is the divvy will be at a reduced
rate of tax as the business has already paid corp tax on it. But it is not recognized as “earned” income, so you cannot reduce it with an RRSP contribution. My guess is that your corp also paid you a wage, and the deduction will be put against that, effectively knocking the legs out
of your total income to reduce the tax.

I generally do whatever my accountant tells me for taxes, but never for investing. I know some who either dont listen, or defer too late and get nailed for it.

Now at least we understand what “soft” modern, technological totalitarianism would look like! Not need to drag people out of their homes when you can shut them down with a keyboard and a mouse!

Interestingly this protest although disturbing was entirely peaceful but more importantly it differed from leftists demonstrations (which are often violent) by the fact that these demonstrators didn’t ask for anything from the government, no money, regulations or privileges, all they wanted it to be left alone.

That I think is the kind of “unacceptable views” that scares big government socialists politicians like Trudeau the most. This explains the nasty reactions, insults and repression overreach They don’t want of need anything from them.

Thanks Jess. The Frontline piece on the rise of fascism in the US is one I’ll read. After learning about the German “Day X” plots and conspiracies and seeing the very strong parallels with groups (boogaloo etc) events (Jan 6th or occupation of the Michigan state capitol) in the US, I’m beginning to see this as a serious problem. I’m quite certain that the reason that FINTRAC was brought into the handling of the convoy is because of these kinds of networks.

Having people on this blog utterly ignore the issue or claim that the opposite is true (anti-white racism, like WTF?) is really disheartening. But, as a climate scientist, I’m used to that kind of ignorance. Reading people here toe that line, especially those who adamantly do so is chilling even if they are harmless.

This past weekend in Portland, a far-right Andy Ngo follower opened fire on a group of demonstrators killing one. He was the second Ngo-er to have taken up violence. Aside from organized fascism, I think this kind of pot-shot violence from far-right people toting guns is on its way to becoming much more common. Unfortunately, the left will eventually have to arm itself with more than words and home-made shields. From there civil war isn’t too far off.

Do you have any links to send showing the use of paper-mills to manufacture truth to hateful ends?

The Senate was going to vote it down.

I got it wrong, I thought they’d drop it on Monday before the NHP had a chance to vote it down, but they decided to commit political suicide instead, cowards.

As someone who has battled the NDP a lot more than the Liberals over the years, I can say that ever CPC candidate up against an NDP incumbent will beat them over the head about their support for totalitarianism.

The silver lining to all of this is that we won’t need to hear any more from the virtue signaling left when some tinpot dictator decides he will use the powers and force of the state to attack his political opponents.

It’s also opened up many people’s eyes to the power the state has over your finances and anything else that is registered with them. People thinking Canada had a sound banking system seeing the lines outside the banks of people trying to get cash being told there’s no 50’s or 100’s left, and restrictions are in place. Kind of like Greece 10 years ago.

———————————-

It’s a great discussion, but can we stop with the insults?

I checked in my area and it looks like RE slightly
exceeded the 450% since 96, but actually dropped if you went from 95. The TSX was slightly less, but increases if you shift back a few months to catch the recent market high. The S&P was more like 600%, although again varies depending on exact dates. I dont believe divvies directly enter into the index value
calculation, though their payout would lower cash
available for corporate growth.

The taxation comment is fair, though one also has to take into account property tax, insurance, mortgage interest – none of which are directly recouped. Theoretically, prop tax could lead to better amenities in the area, increasing property values in general.

Also some cost for required maintenance or upgrades which are reflected in the market price of an individual RE holding, and therefore would be averaged out over
the market as a whole.

And of course the imputed rent, but also imputed labour cost for work performed by the property owner.

Other than the ongoing tax, an index costs you an MER and possibly an advisor’s fee. And the TFSA could have sheltered some of that tax.

So a highly debatable topic, dependent on individual
properties, local RE markets and timing.

What I like about the investments, is you can sell just a bit, any time, for any purpose, tax effectively.

And while you cant live in an ETF, it can pay your
property tax, insurance, electricity bill….

Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while you might just miss it.

Confidence in the Canadian banking system is caput. Some serious backpedaling going on. The RCMP’s list of targeted accounts was small and based on evidence gathered at the protest, you know, proper policing methods.

However the government heavily implied that those who only donated would also be targeted. Either the banks took it upon themselves to proactively freeze accounts not on the RCMP’s list, unlikely, or the government directly pressured the banks to do so with the aide of illegally obtained information, seems about right.

Senators, god bless ’em, were asking the tough questions because their cushy pay packets were not on the line like their lower house colleagues. Even if the Act passed in the Senate it would have done so with the thinnest of margins and the possibility of it being rejected was in the air.

So with push back from the banks and dissent in the senate, Mr. Socks does what every controlling narcissist does, he pulls the spotlight back on himself. But the threat still remains. He may have holstered his gun, but the threat that he pulls it out again is still there. Canada Inc is done for, Trudeau is weeks away from being ousted and the protests will continue.

I’ll take the graphic (that I googled 3 seconds before replying to you because sex and gender is something I spend little time thinking about) that is based voluminous scientific research over a guy who likens sex to a motorcycle vs a bicycle and thereby self-pwns in this era of a slew of e-bikes and motorcycles of all kinds ranging from fully human powered, to souped up monsters.

It’s a well-written opinion piece, I’ll give you that. But, it’s not science.

Most importantly, why is this guy so worried about defining sex as a binary? Furthermore, why have you latched some firmly onto this hobby horse of yours? The discussion was about Jordan Peterson failing to acknowledge that white supremacy exists in Canada, not gender.

It is not false. I talked to my banker. People have lost trust in JT and are worried. Capital and business just needed 1 solid reason to divest from Canada, and JT just added 1 more. I also asked around, and most everyone ‘thought’ about doing it…so you know darn well that many other people did. One report of a guy said he was denied anything bigger than $2500 withdrawal. Left media could only try to write articles about how the freezing of accounts was not happening anymore, to PREVENT, people running out more money. Remember, the main media is only the mouth of the government. The government didn’t want to cause a bigger problem. In a few weeks, you might hear about the fall-out, when it wont’ spur a bigger problem for JT. Get out there and so some research, the information is all around social media. Oil… up.. up she goes.

Heather Cox Richardson is an American historian and professor of history at Boston College. According to Wikipedia: Richardson has authored six books on history and politics. She is a founder and editor at werehistory.org, which presents professional history to a public audience through short articles. Between 2017 and 2018, she co-hosted the NPR podcast Freak Out and Carry On.[3] Most recently, Richardson started publishing “Letters from an American”, a nightly newsletter that chronicles current events in the larger context of American history.[4][5] The newsletter accrued tens of thousands of subscribers making her, as of December 2020, the most successful individual author of a paid publication on Substack.[6]

She posts almost daily on her facebook page. An excerpt from her post dated Feb 22, 2022 (I highly recommend you read the whole thing to put it into context):

The press secretary for Florida governor Ron DeSantis, for example, tweeted that “the sad fact is that the USA is in no position to ‘promote democracy’ abroad while our own country is falling apart.” She continued: “I can never trust the federal government in any way.” J.D. Vance, a Republican candidate for the Senate from Ohio, said, “[T]he Russia–Ukraine border dispute has nothing to do with our national security, no American interest is served by our intervention, and that the obsession with Ukraine from our idiot leaders serves no function except to distract us from our actual problems.” Representative Ronny Jackson (R-TX) called for sanctions, not against Russia but against “senior officials in the Canadian government,” apparently because authorities there have arrested members of the truck convoy shutting down border crossings and cities to protest vaccine mandates for truckers.

I agree. On the large scale, the little fracas in Ottawa the last 3 weeks is super small potatoes in comparison to the possible bad outcomes that may arise from the Ukraine conflict. Hopefully, nobody is trigger happy, but it is clear that Putin does not give a U^&^&^& about what sanctions or restrictions are put on Russia. The west needs to completely sever any financial ties with Russia. If Putin succeeds without much pushback, don’t be surprised when Taiwan is next on the list.

‘And then came the signing ceremony, where Vladimir Putin, Denis Pushilin of Donetsk People’s Republic and Leonid Pasechnik of the Lugansk People’s Republic signed the documents granting them recognition. Written into these one-page orders was an order from Putin to the Russian military to provide for the establishment of peace. There is a very interesting question as to the borders in which this peace will be established. You see, after the unconstitutional overthrow of the democratically elected government in Kiev in 2014, Donetsk and Lugansk seceded as intact regions. Later, in the course of Kiev’s “anti-terrorist operation” (the prefix “anti-” here being rather superfluous) these regions came to be partially occupied by Ukrainian forces. It seems outlandish to imagine that Russia, in the course of recognizing the independence and sovereignty of Donetsk and Lugansk, also granted recognition to partial Ukrainian occupation thereof. It is far more likely that the Russian forces will now politely ask the Ukrainian forces to clear out by a certain deadline or, failing to do so, be killed or captured.’

NP Snippet:

‘More price hikes for fertilizer — and consequently, food — are on the horizon as escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine add to fears of global shortages.

Russia is a low-cost, high-volume global producer for all major fertilizers, and it’s the world’s second-largest producer after Canada of potash, a key nutrient used on major commodity crops and produce. The conflict in the region could disrupt trade flows.

It all points to rising costs for farmers, who are scaling back on fertilizer use. That will potentially trigger lower crop yields and push prices for food even higher around the world. Food costs are already the most expensive in a decade, according to a United Nations gauge.

“Fertilizer prices are at all time highs, this is really just adding more pressure,” said Patrick Donnelly, senior analyst at Third Bridge. “It’s a very real possibility we see shortages for this coming year especially heading into the North American growing season.”

Oh no! Who knew that oil and gas production wasn’t just about electric cars and technology?

Dictator Putin has decided to move.
One wonders how long it will take the silent serfs of Russia to stand up and speak out against this absolute farce of a “war” and the greedy swine that started it.

Either way
Kyiv will be pounded to rubble like Grozny, millions will flee west to overwhelm the neighboring EU States.

A murderous dictator expending thousands, tens of thousands of lives to hold on to his reign.
He has to keep going or he’s dead.
I hope I live to see photos of his body hanging upside down from a lamppost in front of a cheering mob like Mussolini.
Then maybe Ukraine can take the estimated $100 billion dollars he stole from Russia to rebuild.

So I collect it from gov sponsored news (you get the basics plus spin), comments section (golden knowledge for human nature assessment), social media comments (FB, YT), various major and minor groups (fractions – pulse on where movements happen – to get ahead of them), and recommended articles from fringe groups on FB from an extremely diverse set of people who don’t follow orders. Also twitter, for fringe posters who are nerds in their areas of the topic I am studying. These change with time – they cut deep and long into topics and nerd it out for you.

Then I connect all the dots – and so because I don’t get news from 1 source – I don’t end up with 1 opinion – I get millions of opinions.

Unconventional – yes. But it does work. I read a lot, all around, everywhere. I rarely comment, but you asked – and the game is almost done anyway.

What I am trying to do, is game theory. There are so many richer players than just CBC, or CTV…I am trying to get ahead of them by predicting every move they might make of all possible moves. Then I scan out 2 months, and get in front.

My current predictions are that the vaccine mandates are toast, completely. Fed vax mandates will be dropped in Canada, and the US as their trucker convoy does what we do.

Data shows that the vaccine trials are fudged also, leading into massive liabilities for various levels of government.

Digital ID still happens though, but the vaccine thing – at least this one – is dropped from it. Future ones will be added. And you are going to be tracked online, offline, all the time, so keep your nose clean!!

We still work toward 1 world government because that’s what happens with a large population of people to maintain order.

Governments are coalescing. And tyrants are going to tyrant along the way.

I’m almost out of the current game.

Just waiting for oil to top out. Then I’ll cash out. I’ll wait for the next game that interests me. It’s honestly quite exhausting to process all the information.

Looking forward to a period of calm.

There will be a crapstorm of disinformation coming out of Ukraine, that is part of the Russian game plan.

Unprecedented amounts. Follow real journalists or vetted NATO allied state actors. Drop Russia Today as a source RIGHTNOW.

For the conservative out there, Marco Rubio is a great feed. I don’t like his politics, but he’s sharp on foreign policy. The world would be a better place if he had won the 2016 election. But, I digress.

Kind of repetitive Garth but the nugget from today is the advice to stay married. Now in my 60s there is a definite pattern with the many friends in my life. The ones that gritted their teeth and stayed married are much more financially stable and ready for retirement than the ones that divorced and split their worldly goods in some friends’ cases twice. Think on this. The best revenge is to outlive your spouse and get everything!

That was probably one of the most pathetic comments made on this blog. I won’t deny many people think like the above comment. It doesn’t make it any less pathetic.

Some are equating the Russian Invasion of Ukraine with the Jan.6th events.

Jan.6th was exactly the same as the Russian Invasion except for the guns, tanks, bombs, soldiers, shootings, deaths, arrests, aircraft bombings, cruise missiles and civilian casualties. Other than those minor issues, yes, exactly the same.

Not that two wrongs make a right, but the U.S. and U.K. are hardly in no position to be lecturing Putin. They and the coalition of the unwilling, still haven’t been held accountable for their illegal invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

#160 Observer on 02.24.22 at 10:14 am

Trump’s words on the Ukraine invasion:

“I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine—of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful. So, Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent,’ a large section of Ukraine. I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s the strongest peace force. We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace all right. No, but think of it. Here’s a guy who’s very savvy, I know him very well. Very, very well.”

**********

Why have I latched on to this ‘hobby horse’?

Because there’s no such thing as transgender. It’s a social media contagion that ignores decades of research on paraphilias, and the fact that this is a misogynist ideology that solely benefits men.

Because children are being brainwashed and celebrated in school to think that they can change sex. Gender non-conforming children are told there’s something wrong with them that requires life-long medicalization, and are being transed behind their parent’s backs.

Because transition amongst teenage girls has increased 4000% in the last decade, with no corresponding rise in males or other age groups. Detransitioners recieve no support, despite their numbers growing exponentially.

Because most of those girls are gay, like me, or on the spectrum.

Because there is no peer-reviewed research demonstrating that transition helps anyone. Suicidality increases long term.

Because lesbians like me are told that men with autogynephilia, a fetish, are also lesbians.

Because men are being imprisoned with women, resulting in rapes and assaults.

Because men are being cheered for stealing women’s sporting opportunities and accomplishments, and scratching their fetish itch in our locker rooms.

Many people feel the same way I do, but don’t have the luxury of speaking out for fear of job loss and professional censure.

Because women are no longer allowed to organize and advocate for ourselves, if we don’t include men with fetishes.

Because med schools are teaching students that sex doesn’t matter, despite ample evidence to the contrary. Erasing sexed language for women, but not for men.

Trans idiocy is a medical scandal in the making. Several European countries have halted pediatric transition; Canada is far behind and now has a law that handcuffs medical providers, forcing them to affirm the delusions of 11 year old children.

My question to you is, why are you supporting it?

I see Putin has disrupted the white supremes in Canada discussion.

As a survivor of white privilege I’ve been subject to systemic racism and discrimination for some time. Aging white males are a subset of a group which cannot form an exclusive club in British Columbia, as per the supreme court ruling the old Vancouver’s Gentlemen Club unlawful.

Women can still have exclusive organizations though.

Anyhow, my observation around here is the only group I see that might be white supreme is the Hells Angles Motorcycle Club but that seems to operate more as a business unit than radicalizing the populace.

Even the ancient white supremacy group known as Royal Vancouver Yacht Club has had women serve at the executive level for decades.

Is there a directory for white supremacist groups in Canada?

#89 ‘Chris’ – last I checked, my bank card has a ‘daily maximum’ transaction limit on withdrawals. If I want to be able to take out an amount in excess of that, I either have to wait until the following business day; actually go into the bank to make a withdrawal ‘in person’ or contact my bank to increase the allowed daily transaction limit on my bank card. Which the bank might or might not agree to. So anecdotes on folks not being able to withdraw more than $2,500 mean squat given that financial institutions do limit the amount one can withdraw as a regular matter of business. Have done so from day one. If you have a credit card the amount you can charge to it has a limit set by the card issuer. Once you reach the limit any further charges you try to put on the card will automatically be rejected. Again, you’d have to either pay down the card balance or contact your card company/bank to get your limit increased. Not much point being alarmed at what has always been the case…..

Why, on top of this, would anyone want to start a business in Canada? Shaking the confidence in the banks is never a wise idea – not least coming from a guy who could literally freeze all your assets with ZERO oversight.

JT got ahead of this, he heard the same rumblings as me, and obviously is better connected than I am – so he should know. So, go ahead, you explain why JT took a 43 hour about-face. I’m running on a couple theories…can you imagine if he frozen every one of 50,000 Canadian bank accounts who donated to the trucker convey like he promised to do? You can get access to the list of donors yourself. In fact, there is a google map, so you can check on your neighbors via doxx.

If he kept barking up that tree, Canada would have continued to be a global embarrassment.

Ahh, lighten up.

Faron’s not even close to the ridiculous number of posts over the years by crowdedelevatorfartz. And unlike CEF, he appears to have an IQ over 100 and some things to say that are not merely sucking up to the host or thinly veiled right-wing stupidity.

Just a peaceful protest:

As of Monday, police had arrested 191 people for their alleged roles in the occupation of streets around Parliament Hill that stretched into residential areas. Police told the board Thursday 122 of those arrested are facing criminal charges for participating in the convoy, which first reached the capital in the last weekend of January.

Acting Deputy Chief Paul Burnett told the board Ottawa police received more than 2,100 calls for service related to the demonstrations. Police have launched 400 criminal investigations, with 15 of those being probed for hate or bias motives.

There were also 4,200 provincial offence notices issued during the operation, including parking and traffic tickets.

The number of calls to the 911 emergency line jumped up 400 per cent, most of which were a concerted effort to jam up police lines to disrupt service, Burnett said.

Garth, all very good points you made today. I respect what you do and even as we don’t have stocks, mutual funds, ETFs and REITs and other types of investments we have no idea about. We are rich in family, friends and we are doing just fine with our finances as we just paid off our house last year as the pandemic for 2 years made us accelerate paying down our mortgage faster. We own a house now in GTA worth $675,000 and have no debts. We are both 43 and have only 2 pots of money, Savings, short term GICs, $40,000 in there and RRSPs, $370,000 worth but now will top up our TFSAs to the max with a big RRSP refund this year for $30,000 since we have no mortgage payments for 12 months now. We only bought GICs, term deposits, savings accounts, we are currently accruing $14,000 compound interest in our RRSPs. In 20 years our strategy of paying down our mortgage and putting in maximum RRSPs per year and taking the annual RRSP tax refund and paying down our mortgage even more and putting some in savings too really worked well. TFSAs are now our next build up as we have no more thousands in monthly mortgage payments anymore.

Hey, I see needy. CEF and the sail guy are the same….something missing from their lives.

You can be as smart as you want. But as soon as narcissism moves in then your thoughts are moot…and then everyone else loses their voice.

What’s Canadian in that?

The Market could crash 50% from here…S&P hit bear market and now its considerably below 200 day moving average. All signs pointing to further declines. Next target for S&P would be around 4000.

Sell and you can always buy later.

Garth is right: no 50% crash ‘in the cards’.

It’s likely to be closer to 70% (SP500), and >80% for the Nasdaq – but rather than reading the cards, it’s more like ‘baked in the cake’. Bull markets can’t last forever; greater fools however do!

My opinion only!

Kendra, here what you are saying. My uncle is retired due to disability 1 years ago and went variable, my aunt, uncle’s mortgage is coming due, There mortgage payment is going up by $215 a month and their best rates are in the 3.19% to 3.49% 5 year mortgage rate according to their mortgage balance, mortgage broker.

They are using their home equity and because he is disabled, not working it is impacting the number and choice of lenders they can choose from. They are really worried as in the next 2 weeks, they could have to pay even more and everything is costing so much more, gas, food, utilities, other living expenses, property taxes, other taxes etc.

I here it all the time, they should of bought a smaller house, go less in debt, get a smaller mortgage and have more money in savings, RRSP etc. They should of saved more and get bigger tax refunds.

This is playing out exactly how Russia and China set it up to play out and they’ve been planning this for years. We are dumb and think we are checker masters but unfortunately we’re playing a very serious game of chess here with actual chess champions.

And CB inaction over the last 6 months has made it clear that they NEVER intended to taper or increase interest rates. They think they can print forever and organize a Great Reset that will make them richer, but in fact that Great Reset will be their (and our) Great Downfall.

Also, it appears that foreign money has been funding the civil unrest here in North America, and you don’t have to open your eyes too wide to see who’s funding who, or to see that the donors are actually playing on the same team. And their game is going to get bigger and more dangerous in the coming months and years.

When Russia takes over Kiev, they are going to be raking in tons of money thanks to resource grabs and other acquisitions, and will also be enjoying lots of inflationary pricing power over Europe and the West.

Don’t expect China to help us out either. Not only is inflation going to rage here, the shortages of semiconductors and other goods that we rely on them for is going to get very real, very soon and probably for a very long time.

Of course, at any given moment China could invade Taiwan too. I bet that’ll be playing out soon too.

So glad we’ve pursued policies that help non-productive people get stinking rich, squeeze productive people to the point they feel they need to get out, and that have stoked the fires of racial and other tensions. To the point where civil unrest is now a daily reality in North America. And soon, we’ll have too many people, too much inflation, not enough jobs and not enough housing for everyone.

Hard to be happy and content about the future. Unless you’re retired and sitting on a steaming hot pile of equity that’s about to get even bigger.

A question.
Wife has $87,275k in RRSP room (more come end of 2022)
I have random guess of $130k room in my RRSP
Expecting a capital gain of $140k this year in addition to my income of $160k.
Can I dump $87,275 + 2022 amount into a spousal RRSP in 2022 (Jan/Feb 2023)? Or am I limited to her annual amount?
The way you worded it was that:
Contribute into it up to your own contribution limit (18% of earned income, to the $27,830 mark).

I thought I could use up the whole amount at once? Is the above assuming you’ve previously used all your contribution room?
