Time out

This pathetic blog birthed in 2008. The world was descending into a major financial crisis as US real estate collapsed, Wall Street banks toppled, an ugly recession engulfed North America and I was about to be thrown out of the House of Commons for insubordination. And my dog died. Cheka, the husky. A wolf of a beast, after a life of epilepsy. What a year.

Well, it’s 2022. In fourteen years there have been 4,400 posts and 766,000 comments published here. We’ve been through a lot together. The credit crisis. The US debt ceiling collapse. Real estate insanity. Trumpenomics. Record stock market highs. Mortgage cost collapse. A global pandemic that’s lasted two years. And now, the siege. Civil unrest.

The blog has ground out original content seven days a week. And, by the way, it’s still free.

Lately things have changed. The tone below decks has become more difficult as Covid morphed from a scary, unknown, lethal threat into something many now believe is an irritating, commie version of the flu. At first we were skeptical of the virus, and questioned the severity of government measures. That changed as the body count increased, hospitals were stuffed and weeks of disruption turned into months.

Finally vaccines came along and posed the best single path out of the mess. A year later 80% of us are inoculated and in many areas – like Ottawa or Toronto – the rate is 90%. Unbelievable. Two doses turned into three. Vaxports were introduced. QR codes became a thing. After a while it was impossible to get on a train or an airplane without proving vaccination. (Today I had to upload a vax certificate to get a boarding pass for tomorrow.) Shopping or riding transit without a mask is verboten.

Vaccination led to the end of lockdowns and ultimately to a gradual reopening of the economy. Along the way the economic impacts were massive. Governments spent their brains out. Public debt exploded. Commercial real estate took it in the neck. Interest rates collapsed. Real estate everywhere rocketed out of reach of most families. Five million people stopped going to their workplaces. Now inflation has surged, rates are soon reversing, many households are in more debt than they ever imagined and omicron erupted since Christmas with such velocity that government lost the ability to count new infections.

During these two years this blog has tried to offer steady, unemotional, practical and proven advice. No apologies about that. But the world is a markedly different place. The pandemic exacerbated our troubling wealth disparity. We’ve divided Canada into haves (owners) and have-nots (renters). White collar people Zoomed their way to greater net worth while the service sector was gutted. Front-line workers took the risk and the economic hit. Others stayed home and watched their equity make them rich. Financial assets jumped in value even when unemployment was touching 14%.

And, especially, we divided into the vaccinated majority and the shamed minority. Thanks largely to social media misinformation, the influence of the now-departed weird US president and wholly misguided religious leaders, vaccine hesitancy kept seven million Canadians at risk of Covid sickness and death. Meanwhile vaxports and mandates turned off jobs for the hesitant and stripped them of social privileges. The stats tell us of a strong correlation between those who fear the needle and people who have suffered economically since 2019. They’re pissed.

Add in pandemic fatigue, the angst of parents who see their kids cut off from routine activities and the apparent inability of public health measures to deal with Omicron in the last ten weeks, and the result if what we just saw. The Freedom Convoy. Civil disobedience. Death threats to me and comments I never imagined possible. An occupation of our capital city. Anti-politician vulgarity.  An army of citizens joyfully flaunting every rule and daring the establishment to stop them. The huge trucks are wholly intimidating, as they’re meant to be. By calling themselves ‘patriots’ (as the Trump forces do) they seek the high moral ground. Flags everywhere. It’s a time-worn tactic of the hard right in any society in turmoil.

I have no idea how this ends. But it will. Maybe some heads will get cracked. Perhaps politicians here will cave as they have done in the US – where hesitancy is far greater and vax rates much lower. By the way, look where that has taken America, now with 900,000 dead from Covid. How is it not obvious that vaccines work?

If that’s the outcome, many more will perish and we could be ‘living with’ Covid for a far longer period of time as the virus circulates, mutates and enjoys itself. It’s been discovered natural immunity is no lasting defence for those who were infected, and vaccines remain the best hope against sickness, chewing through more than your share of health resources, and the grave.

Anyway, the minority is now driving the bus. So I’m getting off. For a few days.

About the picture: “This is a photo of our new puppy, Aspen,” writes Ron, in the Okanagan. “She started off her life by contracting Parvovirus and coming very close to death. Her former owners could not afford the veterinary costs so they surrendered her and her brother to a dog rescue organization in Kelowna. Paws It Forward the rescue organization worked with local vets and saved the lives of these two Border Collies. Both of these two dogs are now healthy and living with new families in the Okanagan. We feel so lucky that we ended up with Aspen as she is such a good dog. If you could use this photo, Garth, it would mean a lot to us and show support to all the rescue organizations across Canada who do such great work financed completely by donations from other dog loving Canadians. Thanks for all the good work you do on this blog.”

Garth, we’ll miss your blog daily messages if/when/for how long you take a break.

Get some R&R!

I’m sure you’ll miss arguing with some of the anti-vax/-mandate/-lefty/-CDC/-Trudeau/-NIMBY rabble from the steerage section for a while…

Thanks for the great blog which I’ve been following for 4 or 5 years now. I agree the comments have gone feral which is why I haven’t bothered approaching that cesspool in months.

You shouldn’t be subject to abuse for expressing well founded opinions. Maybe just turn the comment feature off? Sign of the polarized times where all sides are too busy talking to listen to what their fellow citizens are saying.

Take a break if you need it, I’ll be waiting for your return with anticipation. How will I know you are back?

#6 Polozified on 02.07.22 at 3:11 pm

The trucker protest won’t last that long, but have a good break regardless!

I’ve read the blog for the last 10+ years. It will be missed.

Take care Garth. I’m glad to hear this for your sake. You have the writer’s urge and I’m sure it will find an outlet that we can all look forward to reading and, hopefully, not commenting on or around in a way that taxes you as a person.

I know I’ve taken my share of your time. I’ll just say thank you for it.

For you, me and everyone else who comments here, here’s a funny spoof that I think we can all agree with.

All the best,

That’s really too bad. I’ll miss your daily dose of clarity and voice of reason. I rarely read the comments (and yes, I do realize the irony of now posting in the comments) and I think they are not helpful to anyone.

Can’t wait to have you back! Have a good break – you deserve it.

#21 millmech on 02.07.22 at 3:30 pm

I guess we will be outlawing the display of right wing vulgarity, the Canadian Flag, correct am I not. Surprised to see at the Olympic opening ceremony that we did not have the flag at half mast. One of our suppliers gave me a T shirt that has a Canadian Flag and states “Proudly Canadian”, they have taken those shirts out of circulation now as they are getting a lot of negative feedback about having national pride.
It is indeed a sad state of affairs that one has to think twice about showing public displays of pride in ones owns national identity because now you are considered a far right nationalist.

#22 Immigrant man on 02.07.22 at 3:32 pm

Garth, easy solution – make the blog paid-for. A nominal subscription fee will keep the crazies off. And those that are so “brave” to make death threats in an anonymous comments section will disappear cuz talk is cheap.

#23 Yankee in Indiana on 02.07.22 at 3:33 pm

I have been enjoying your blog for a few years. Just retired and will pay of my house this year. My real estate taxes are $250/month. I can’t imagine how overpaying for a house will work out for Canadians. Honk Honk to the truckers.

#24 TS Harpoon on 02.07.22 at 3:33 pm

Garth,

Be well. You are highly regarded and I would be more than happy to keep this blog going as guest moderator. I am talented in using the delete button (if the need arises).

#25 yvr_lurker on 02.07.22 at 3:36 pm

Enjoy the break. I would not have the patience that you have had in dealing with the “public”. Perhaps it might be easier just to simply put out a few blog posts a week, dealing primarily with investments and macro-economic trends, and have some subjects verbotten (i.e. Covid and vaccines). You will never be able to convince those outliers of your views, and so frankly what is the point in continuing the discussion on that particular topic.

#26 Linda on 02.07.22 at 3:36 pm

‘Aspen’ is the poster pup for staying healthy & out of the hospital. Seriously, looking at an offer of an upgraded travel credit card today. One of the benefits they tout is travel insurance for the card holder. However said insurance is linked to age. IF you are under 65, it covers up to 21 days of travel. 65+ gets 4 days. I get that as one ages ones ability to deal with illness/injury diminishes, but seriously? Turn 65 & make sure your will is up to date & your burial arranged? As for purchasing insurance, good grief. The questions asked make me wonder how any of us even reach age 65:)

#27 Swanson on 02.07.22 at 3:37 pm

Garth, please take some well deserved rest.

This blog is not just a daily source of financial education and entertainment for me, but also a much needed voice of reason when I feel panicky (market correction, COVID…).

I’ll still be coming back here daily to check for new posts. I think you might want to consider disabling the comment section though.

#28 Armpit on 02.07.22 at 3:37 pm

Garth…. Dorothy will really thank you…. and you both will be rejuvenated. I’m in the warm waters now since December and it is exhilarating.

Wean yourself from all the noise beyond your control and focus within your mind and soul, simultaneously with Dorothy. Let it all go!!

I’ve been off that bus now since the trucks rolled into Ottawa. I live in a suburb of Ottawa and refuse to watch the local news, click the local headlines or have anything to do with the convoy. I am one of the fortunate that it only impacts my life if I allow it.

P.S. Indeed I was harsh on Nova Scotia in the last episode.

#43 Ballingsford on 02.07.22 at 3:57 pm

Garth, you mean no blog for few days or just getting off the Covid bus and walking? Lots of other stuff to see while walking. Might see some Pierre for PM posters or something.

#44 Classical Liberal Millennial on 02.07.22 at 3:57 pm

I don’t comment that often but have to just say I’ve been appreciating your wisdom, advice, and level-headed commentary for years. Please don’t stay away too long, although I will certainly understand if you do. If anything, perhaps the comments are what needs a break for a few days. Or some way to provide more accountability to those sending nasty messages. Perhaps linking their comment to a public profile (Facebook, Google, Twitter… something, anything). Anyway, thank you again Garth. Hopefully the Ivermectin Insurrection ends soon.

#48 Lloyd on 02.07.22 at 3:59 pm

Vaccines work. Lockdowns, restrictions and mandates do not, as proven by Johns Hopkins. If T2 were a true leader he would recognize the need to start a dialogue with the protest organizers. Make them feel heard, even if he doesn’t agree with their wishes. Somehow he thinks he only needs to represent the 32% who voted for him, while ignoring the rest of the population. Fringe minority, right…

#49 Wrk.dover on 02.07.22 at 4:02 pm

A boarding pass…to Barbados for Banks Beer and Mt Gay Rum? I’d settle for Red Stripe and Appleton’s in Negril.

I’ll monitor the live cam at Soggy Dollar Bar in BWI for your physique Garth. You must be going somewhere nicer than GTA.

#50 Calgary Rip Off on 02.07.22 at 4:03 pm

As always thank you for your continued expertise. I agree with vaccination, I have 3x pfizer. At the same time vaccination mandates alienate many people. It could be argued that Covid 19 should be treated as any other outbreak. Even so, data is elusive as to precisely what constitutes severe risk. Genetics? Molecular levels of certain things? It seems that vaccines plus vitamins(d3 and C) lessen severe risk. In the cardiac unit at the foothills hospital where I work, staff who are vaccinated are often sick from Covid despite triple vaccinations. Unvaccinated arent grasping that vaccines dont prevent sickness but do lessen mortality and severe outcomes from Covid 19. Even so, vitamin C(if concerned about kidney stones, add B6 and magnesium plus drink water) and Vitamin D3 will lessen covid risk even more after vaccination.

In Calgary in the NW where I live, bidding wars are occuring, apparently interest rates will rise 0.5%? My wife wants to sell. The dilemma though is the down payment and the reality of bidding wars. As usual, Calgary remains a rip off.

And the criminal element is out. On Deerfoot trail this morning my wife was stuck in a convoy protesting for “freedom” from vaccines. Jason Kenney remains incognito.

In December my RV was stolen from my driveway with my daughter in her room upstairs 5 feet away. The cops called at 1 am and said the guy had run a red light by the police station and was apprehended after a brief chase. $12K in damage, covered by insurance. Cops wouldnt say who the guy was. The cops showed up at the front door asking my wife and daughter if the knives, some of which were 4 foot long were ours, along with real samurai swords. As usual, Calgary is full of two faced slimeballs and criminals and remains a ripoff for housing(though not as bad as Vancouver).

Additionally, as there is no provincial tax, my managers are not transparent as to funding in the hospital as I imagine the pressure is immense to keep all 11 floors going(my unit runs roughly $22 million to run, one unit on one floor in one Calgary hospital).

It’s your birthday soon Garth. Enjoy your birthday.

#51 Brett in Calgary on 02.07.22 at 4:03 pm

Yep, might as well take a break. I hope the sunshine of spring sorts things out.

#52 Nonplused on 02.07.22 at 4:05 pm

At first I supported the trucker’s right to protest, same as everybody else. But I didn’t think that it would be into its second week, blocking roads, and honking all night. I respect everybody’s right to protest, but you don’t block the roads and be a 24 hour nuisance. It’s just not “Canadian”, if you will. They need to cut that stuff out.

How it ends I don’t know. Both sides have painted themselves into a corner on opposite sides of the room.

Anyway, calling them names won’t help. They are used to that ever since Pierre Trudeau came to power. This protest divides pretty much along the same East vs. West lines as pretty much any other issue. Let’s hope it doesn’t snowball.

#53 Cadicat on 02.07.22 at 4:06 pm

I have followed you from the beginning. Bought all your books. I see more and more of the people I look to for guidance and a sliver of sanity stepping away. My heart is breaking for what is happening to this country. I hope you find some peace. Look forward to your return.

For a few days that is.

Enjoy the break

#55 Billy Buoy on 02.07.22 at 4:09 pm

Good idea…enjoy the silence.

#56 macduff on 02.07.22 at 4:11 pm

A very well deserved break indeed, and the rationale is wholly understandable.
My only concern is where Turnernation will disseminate his incredibly detailed and delusional ramblings going forward. I do hope that he has a back up plan, because otherwise he will get backed up, and we know that especially as we get older, when things get backed up it isn’t a good thing.

#57 T-Rev on 02.07.22 at 4:11 pm

Good for you Garth- the internet is a put of vipers, and the best solution is to simply turn it off.

Get some fresh air and pay attention to real people only. Forgo emails for phone calls for a few days as well. It’ll help.

#59 Ordinary Blog Dog on 02.07.22 at 4:14 pm

Garth,

Thanks for all of the advice and perspective through the years. I am a long long time reader, and look forward to your posts. I will miss the dailies – but understand where you are – the steerage section has a nasty edge lately. I have prospered financially through the pandemic (due primarily to you) but see others who have struggled. My wife and I are weary – we have never volunteered so much or given away as much as we have the last two years.

So go ahead, take care of yourself …. and again, thanks.

#60 MadHatter on 02.07.22 at 4:14 pm

Hey Garth I hope you have a good break but please don’t leave permanently as I have come to rely on your posts for knowledge and future personal financial decisions. I think that every few weeks you have substantial advice on the state of crypo, when to convert pensions, interest rate directions, etc.

I am many weeks behind but awhile ago you asked your readers what they want from this blog. My answer is more of the same but also I would like to know more about your entrepreneur activities. You mentioned that you have written a number of books but can you tell me how long it took to write each one, who did you approach to distribute the books, what did it cost, what was the return on the investment, did the book help sell seats in your city tours? How about the general store, what did it cost, how long did it take, and how much profit did you make? What is your mindset regarding being an entrepreneur vs a rank and file employee. Is it for everybody and what have you learned along the way?

I think there is lot left for us to learn from you. Keep your head up and keep up the good work!

#61 Ian on 02.07.22 at 4:15 pm

You have more patience and understanding than the vast majority of us to have lasted this long without a break or cracking under the pressure. Do whatever you think is best for you and Dorothy for now, and you can save the rest of the country or world later if you still have the energy. Your blog has already saved many of us from being fools already, and we will carry on the legacy of educating the lost around us as best we can whether or not you continue this blog. (but it would be nice if you continued, at least on a part time basis)

#64 pPrasseur on 02.07.22 at 4:19 pm

Denmark had less death (per capita) than Canada and is now almost fully reopened.

Funny that you show data from John Hopkins U

Recently that same University produced a stat study that demonstrate that lockdown had almost no effect preventing death to Covid.

https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/national/coronavirus/johns-hopkins-university-study-finds-lockdowns-only-reduced-covid-deaths-by-0-2

A new study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University reveals COVID lockdowns prevented only a small number of deaths caused by the virus.

We don’t have any. What’s your point? – Garth

#65 VanIslander on 02.07.22 at 4:21 pm

Your opinions, wisdom, life experience and wit are a daily salve, thought provoker, discussion point, and general enjoyment for myself for years. I suppose in this intersection of Covid fatigue and louder than normal blowhard noise echo chamber, we all have a point (or several over the last 2 years) where throwing up our hands feels like the only thing left to do. We are only human after all. The world churns on with or without any of one of us, but forging ahead towards something better remains the only thing each one of us can do, lest the alternative. You’ve done your part more than most. No journey is a path of evenly placed steps. Refresh, reflect on what and whom are important, and remember all the good you’ve done. We haven’t forgotten. ✌️

#66 George S on 02.07.22 at 4:21 pm

Your advice has always been perfect.
Please enjoy your well deserved holiday away from the grind of trying to train the untrainable.

Always wishing you well!

Sorry to hear about Death threats directed at you, are unfortunate to put it mildly. Its a sham we all can’t listen to each other and get along and work it all out or at least get along despite our differences. We humans are all more alike than different. But you already know that.

Take all the time you want, you certainly have earned a break. The number of people you have helped financially is beyond measure, priceless in fact, I’m sure.

It’s always good to hear you perspective on things, 99.9999% of which I agree with.
The goodness in your hearth always shines through.
And your spelling is always way better than mine LOL.

If we are luckily your colleges with post some more financial advice, if only on weekends. And I hope they remembers to add a nice dog pictures and maybe a cat from time to time. My Fingers are crossed.

Hopefully if/when you decide to come back the world will resemble something that looks to be way closer to what it was like ‘in the before times.’, different for sure but hopefully it come out better eventually, hopefully.

Take care. Hope to see you back here when you are fully refreshed and feel like it of course.
Your truly, Greg W.

You maybe should take a look at securing a Liberal seat in the soon to come election. You obviously are not a Conservative.

#73 Ricker on 02.07.22 at 4:31 pm

Garth, over the years, I’ve been collecting some of your pearls of wisdom. My first notation is dated March 18, 2008. You have enabled me to invest very profitably by following your advice. I thank you so much for that!

It is disturbing that these anti-science Canadians are stooping this low with their behaviour at these demonstrations/ hostage takings. No concerns for anyone else. These people should not be able to even touch a Canadian flag; they debase it. My vision of Canada is shaken by these anarchists but they are a tiny minority of the total population.

Unfortunately, the internet allows the nutbars to find each other and organize; allows the lies and misinformation to reach gullible people so easily and gives the means for haters to attack and bully people, usually in a cowardly anonymous way.

As has been mentioned before, maybe you should end the comments section so that you’re not exposed to the odious elements.

Angus Reid shows 54 percent of Canadians want restrictions lifted. 15 point swing in two weeks.

Mandates won’t prevent mutations because the 3rd world has a vaccine shortage.

The vaccines would be better served in the developing world to prevent mutations.

#77 Chris L. on 02.07.22 at 4:35 pm

Lockdowns “work”, they delay deaths, but, like the vaccine, they do not cure anyone.

Canada has had some of the strictest and longest lasting lockdowns in the world. The death rate only reflects the efficacy of lock downs. This is a confusion of cause and effect. How many more lock downs do you want? Why, if we have a 90% vaccination rate, can we not just open everything up? The actions speak – if the ‘experts’ had full trust in the vaccine – the lockdowns would end, and the vaccine passports would be the only tool we needed anymore.

I still don’t understand why the entire picture can’t be put together. It’s not the most complicated puzzle we’ve ever assembled. It’s just very political.

For a protest that was partly organized by a native woman (Metis) and a Jewish man, unclear to me how it is a far right movement. Saying that, any fringe elements should be immediately removed, and if not then shame on them (the protesters). I walked by the protest in Toronto – completely not what I expected based on how the media portrayed them. I saw families and ordinary people waving flags. I may diagree with them and their protest, but i also find it hard to judge when I wfh in comfort with massive savings, massive real estate equity and massive stock returns. I’m rapidly loosing faith in government and media in general – everything gets twisted and political.

My patience with the Flu Trux Klan is completely exhausted. I can’t blame any politician, including Trudeau, who I’m not a big fan of, for not wanting anything to do with them. Threats that they will not give up (and stop breaking the law, blocking roads and harassing people) until their (mostly ridiculous) demands are met show that these are not people to be negotiated with.

Garth, easy solution – make the blog paid-for. A nominal subscription fee will keep the crazies off. And those that are so “brave” to make death threats in an anonymous comments section will disappear cuz talk is cheap.

A small nominal fee to post comments is not a bad idea. Have the money to go a charity supporting animal and dog welfare.

Doesn’t he already do that?

Sounds like you are advocating for strengthening this “echo chamber” even more.
Is this blog meant to be a platform for free speech?
Or should we just rename it to “The blog that exclusively allows like-minded people to share their common ideas, ideals and beliefs.?”

Censorship is a slippery slope!

Besides, I know of no other blog of this size anywhere where the blogger feels the need to control the narrative to the point where he feels he has to read every comment.

Add thumbs up/thumbs down/reporting capability to the blog and the blog dogs can review every comment for review so Garth doesn’t have to. But hey, that would mean bringing the blog into the new millennium.

Dog forbid!

#93 P on 02.07.22 at 4:55 pm

Garth, take as long a break as you need.
You’ve accomplished the impossible running the daily blog for this long.
When you decide to come back, consider making this a paid blog.
Your goal to spread the common sense and provide good information to all is admirable but unfortunately not everyone can appreciate it.

Maybe make it paid for daily posts with ability to comment but delayed posts by a week without comments for unpaid? Not sure? How about a pilot version?

#97 Natural immunity - FA that knows it All on 02.07.22 at 5:05 pm

If that’s the outcome, many more will perish and we could be ‘living with’ Covid for a far longer period of time as the virus circulates, mutates and enjoys itself. It’s been discovered natural immunity is no lasting defence for those who were infected, and vaccines remain the best hope against sickness, chewing through more than your share of health resources, and the grave.

Anyway, the minority is now driving the bus. So I’m getting off. For a few days.

#102 Property Accountant on 02.07.22 at 5:10 pm

Some clarification here.

1. How it is not obious that vaccine work?
Well simply one graph is not enough as there are lots of confounding variables here. To be dead from COVID you had to be tested positive first and so it happens that in USA 66% more tests were done than in Canada per million people, naturally increasing death rate from COVID, by mere increase in testing.

2. UK with couple times higher population and 72% vaccination rate (only) dropped all restrictions mandates or COVID passports. Canada has 80-85%.
So , does it seem fair to truckers who spend 99% percent of the time in their cabin driving, eating and sleeping?

No to mention to all Canadians spread wide over 2nd largest country it the world.

Just food for thought.

Garth, thank you for your continued wisdom for these many years. As an occasional reader, I find your views to on target. It is unfathomable for those who are already vaccinated to understand the issue for those who are unvaxxed. It is a freedom/choice not to be vaxxed, but those who choose this path need to understand the consequences and must follow the rules. No one told them they *must* get vaccinated, yes, it’s their choice. However, don’t complain that you can’t dine inside a restaurant or do anything else that requires a vax pass.
As history has shown, there will always be a those who are unable to comprehend the situation.

Denmark has dropped all Covid restrictions, including the wearing of masks. Their logic is the high vaccination rate (90%), and the mild severity of Omicron for people that are vaccinated, does not justify the restrictions.

The Freedom Convoy should not have changed their goals to full on removal ALL covid restrictions and of government (i.e. asking Trudeau to resign).

I think the Convoy saw that they could dig in, so why not ask for more?

I think it was better when they were asking JUST to have the vaccine mandate against truckers removed. Because then Justin would look pretty stupid not to give in for that single request.

However, now JT looks pretty justified to not give in on anything.

The Convoy got greedy and now will sadly get nothing. Drastic measures will need to be taken very soon simply because the situation is so unsafe. e.g. if a building were to catch fire, the whole block could go up due to the gridlock. So here comes the military, the rubber bullets and zap-straps. It won’t be pretty.

While Im not scientifically qualified to comment on vaccines and death rates, I do know how to read a graph. This graph shows steadily increasing deaths per country. So as the vaccination rates goes up, the death rate due to the virus we have been vaccinated against also goes up. More vaccinations, more deaths.

So how does this graph show that vaccines (or anything else we are doing) are making any difference? Death rates should be decreasing, not increasing. But this graph is alarming, death rates continue to go up up up, no matter what country one looks at, or what each of these countries mandates. In reality, I would expect to see the highest death rates at the beginning as the pandemic explodes into the population, and decreasing death rates over time as vaccines and other measures came into play, similar to other diseases like polio, measles etc etc. Authorities would be showing us this declining death rate as a way to illustrate that we as a society were going in the right direction, policies were working and that there was an end in sight. They’re not showing us anything.

So look at this graph and say that what we are doing is working…. resembles the definition of insanity, which is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results. To justify mandates by saying ‘well, without these mandates it would have been much worse’, is a cop out. It is getting worse, month by month as far as this graph shows. And although no graph can predict the future, the trend suggests that it will get far worse.….perhaps unless we try something new.

Two weeks to flatten the curve,…..no wait, two years to flatten the curve…..no wait, two decades to flatten the curve……no wait……. It sounds a lot like another seasonal respiratory illness that we have ell been living with (and dying from) for centuries….perhaps its time to try treating it that way.

Trudeau needs to invoke the Emergencies Act, bring in The military, impound the trucks and sell them to pay for the costs. Arrest those spreading anarchy and terrorism. Use lethal force if necessary.

The Ottawa police have proven incapable and unwilling to deal with this crisis, as has Ford.

Wish more could take a break, breathe (safely), calmly reflect and find common ground to move forward together. We’re all running on adrenalin/outrage and paying the price. I decided to take this quarter off as even my edges were fracturing under the stress.
Lost someone in Wave 1, front line, put themselves out there around the clock to help others before there was a vaccine available. Lost someone in Wave 4, who thought they would be fine tucked away in their rural community, and were afraid of the vaccine. I haven’t come close to processing my emotions in either case. Also know people suffering with long Covid, the gift you don’t want to keep giving…
I’m saddened by the suffering, hurt, anger and division all around. Quite the test of our collective humanity.

It’s been discovered natural immunity is no lasting defence for those who were infected – Garth

Nothing of the sort has be proven actually, I’ve seen data recently showing that people already infected are very unlikely to end up in hospitals. It is what it is, not to say that vaccines are useless but likely not practical for the whole planet.

There was a time when the word science used to mean something, now, either for Covid or Climate it’s just a word politicians and activists use when they want their opponents to shut up (when it is not to cancel them completely). There are always studies they can use make their point and ignorant medias can’t see the difference between that and an actual scientific proof!

And you can. – Garth

You should stop being so partisan and instead be more objective in your analyses. We reap what we sow.

I also disagree with your your theses that people who rent out houses are “investors” because if they have an asset that they have to pay to carry that’s not an investment that is speculation. Try to sell that idea to your clients and see how many clients you keep.

#157 IHCTD9 on 02.07.22 at 7:37 pm

A few thoughts:

I love this comments section, it is now unique on the www for a light moderation hand yet still reasonably well behaved (I have a high tolerance for misbehaviour). Not many places that mix all demographics, and you can still find a bit of common ground with folks on the other side of the fence. Hell, I even occasionally agree with Ponzie and Faron (once and a while).

I could kind of sense this convoy business was grating on our gracious host. Canada definitely has issues these days. The truckers don’t bother me much, but I’m starting to get a bit concerned. They should’ve packed it up two Sundays ago. Nothing good can happen from here on out.

Finally Mr. T, a piece to take your mind off this stuff. G F Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks”, it commands your attention. Mix in a little Scotch, and you’re guaranteed to forget about everything else for at least 20 minutes. :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRAtB-01GdE

I know Dr. V would have prescribed a healthy dose of Beethoven, but mixing Scotch and Ludwig van can be dangerous.

Ah yes, the tyranny of democracy, akin to 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner….

What your ilk fail to understand, is that the majority cannot simply vote the rights away from the remaining minority. That will always lead to revolt by the minority.

Either everyone has freedom or none do.

I think it is high time to get rid of the comments. Unfortunately some people do not understand what having a discussion really means and the toxicity of some of the posts is eating at whoever is moderating this – from my understanding mostly you.

I know from personal experience how toxic for one’s health poisonous negativity is. I reached a point where I refuse to write “angry emails/comments/answers” even when I am feeling very entitled to do so, and the reasoning is on my side. It is just not worth the impact on my health and that of my loved ones.

Perhaps there is something we can learn from these truckers in Ottawa before we judge them. Despite what the media says about them, I looked at the livestreams for myself and have seen nothing but peace, brotherly love, joy and a commitment to freedom of choice.

This group must be one of the highest risks for Covid. They are not respecting social distancing, they don’t wear masks, they are hugging each other, they are unvaccinated and they are standing around all day in unseasonably cold weather during flu season. Despite this, none of them are getting Covid. Considering what the city police and counsellors are currently doing to shut them down, a Covid outbreak would seem to play right into their hands….but……its not happening…..

Thumbs up to you Garth.

It’s been fun over the years sitting on the Deckchair watching the world float by, but during COVID we seem to have lost what it is to be “Canadian”.

My mother was 8 and my Dad a couple of years older when WWII started.

They had about 4 years of wondering if tomorrow would come for millions in Europe; here we have a segment of our population caving in after two, even when death is easier to avoid than for residents in WWII.

I was living in the NL for a few years around the 50th anniversary of the liberation in WWII. Yes, I spoke Dutch and was integrated into society there. People of ALL ages knew what happened.

Maybe we have been too coddled in Canada to not know what reality is like; to act this way towards each other during this relatively short pandemic is shameful.

1. “Thanks largely to social media misinformation, the influence of the now-departed weird US president…” – you are aware that departed weird US president made it possible for these vaccines to be made so quickly, right?

2. The graph you shared is great, but why is there no Israel, one of the most vaccinated countries, on that graph? Israel is at the same level as USA at the moment. What does that tell us?

Thank you for your daily posts, hope you have a wonderful break!

They call us sheeple and claim that we just don’t know, we’re not free. It’s incredible and as you say not at all new, done over and over in history. They have bought into the lies, cons and demagogues. Trump and his enablers in the states and I don’t know if he’s a truly is but Pierre is willing to jump up and play the part or whichever part gets him more power. We are in frightening times and times like these haven’t ended well in the past. When so many are willing to lie so wildly and so many are willing to believe whatever they say how can it end well?

We don’t have any. What’s your point? – Garth

Simple, I live in a province that had some of the most severe restrictions in the world, everything from curfew to vaccine mandates and closures of every kind.

Results: Québec got the same death rate than the US.
So we got the death rate AND the nasty consequences (psychological and economy) from multiple lockdowns and restrictions, to me that looks like total failure. No wonder people are pissed!

I can empathize about the death threats; in my professional life, I have had to move out of home at least three times while the police picked up dangerous people who have threatened my life. One last thing. The locked in truckers protest in Ottawa which may have started out as a Canadian protest of vaccination requirements for truckers quickly morphed into a US led antivax and anti mandates protest. It is being funded by the extreme right and the extreme Christian Right in the US. Think Republicans, think the Trump rabble. This is just plain wrong but displays well the powerful toxicity of all social media

#185 VladTor on 02.07.22 at 9:04 pm

Dear Garth,

We all have a serious problem. Trudeau is the problem.
You’ve been fighting against anti-vaxers for 2 years. I and 80% of the people here on the blog are vaccinated and it’s all been destroyed by Mr. Trudeau in an instant. He recently announced that he is sick with Covid-19 and disappeared into an unknown bunker. Here is my analysis of the situation.

1. Trudeau, if this alpha male who was vaccinated three times with a special vaccine for prime ministers, full of health and not at all at risk group, really got sick, then now all those who were not vaccinated will shout that the vaccine does not work. The “Freedom Convoy” drivers who at the height of Covid were traveling to the States to provide us who was in lockdown, with everything we needed and were in the midst of a crowd of unvaccinated Americans and didn’t get sick – will shout that they were right and that the new rules need to be lifted because if alpha male Trudeau … see the beginning. They will use Trudeau as an argument supporting the rule of voluntary rather than compulsory vaccination and demand the abolition of all vaccine regulations. Trudeau should be fired because his actions cast doubt on our health care system and cast doubt in the minds of 80% of vaccinated people.

2. Consider the opposite case. Trudeau, this triple-vaccinated alpha male by special vaccine for prime ministers, is full of health and he’s not at all at risk group – NOT SICK! He’s deceiving us!!!! First, he created a critical situation in the country by his actions, and then cowardly disappeared into the bunker. This is not surprising for a former teacher. As a teacher, he was used to having a difficult situation decided for him by the principal or even by the school board. Well, in extreme cases, the wife can help him. May be he forgot to ask his wife for advice (maybe she went shopping or to a fitness club at that moment), and there is no one above himself to ask, as it was at school, because there is simply no one above him, except God. This is an even worse situation, because in accordance with paragraph 1, he questioned the work of our health system and sowed chaos in the minds of vaccinated people (well, for example, I have). Even worse, we chose an honest personas a Prime Minister and I personally respect the choice of the people, whatever it may be. The Prime Minister should be as immaculate as the Virgin Mary! Thus, Trudeau should be dismissed as a liar, as a person who is unable to lead the country in a critical situation, and of course because his actions have called into question the functioning of our health care system as described in paragraph 1.

How to solve this dilemma – “Trudeau is sick or Trudeau is not sick” (Be or not to be!) and thus calm the country down. Well, because he is still the prime minister, then we must proceed cautiously. I would send the Minister of Defense, the Chief police officer, the Minister of Health, two strong orderlies and a registered nurse with all the necessary tests to his bunker. He would be take a Covid-19 test voluntarily (and this should be recorded on video. If he agrees, as an honest person, the test will be taken and the analysis published in the media. Then the parliamentary commission will act in accordance with paragraph 1 or paragraph 2. and finally Trudeau will be dismissed. If he doesn’t agree to take the test voluntarily, well then…. well, orderlies for what? Then the test is published, parliamentary commission, Trudeau’s dismissal.

If the respected audience has any thoughts on this matter, do not hesitate to write.

It’s a time-worn tactic of the hard right in any society in turmoil.

pandemic fatigue – that would be me. I’ve got the two shots plus a booster but I still have to wear a stupid mask. How long do I have to wear a mask?

when I was young I went to school. If the teacher said something, I could see his face. Verbal comprehension is visual too. There’s all sorts of educational studies. Let’s compare classes where the teacher wears a mask against where he doesn’t. Let’s compare zoom classes against in-person classes. Here’s a guess. Teacher wears a mask – comprehension is down 33%. Zoom classes, comprehension is down 66%.

huge trucks have insurance. The City of Ottawa is writing down license numbers and informing the insurance companies. My guess is that the companies are not going to be happy. And infractions are now $1000. Party’s over.

Immigrant Man#22 has a good point about some sort of subscription fee although I feel you’re the kind of person who wants to help out young people who may not have the resources to pay. Glad to see you’ll be back, don’t know how you do it, although I know you’re the Stephen King of real estate and financial writing and can’t give it up, thankfully.

Thank you for all that you’ve done to help so many with such wise advice on a daily basis. I have learned a lot over the years from your posts; it’s helped me have a steady hand and a clear head during these difficult financial times. I have only commented once before, never read the comments. Would you consider turning off commenting so you never have to read such despicable comments? And I would pay a monthly fee to read your posts. Well done, sir, and thank you.

MANDATE
FREEDOM

Hilarious in its simplistic, ironic, stupidity.

“Oh, and the last living signatory of the Canadian Charter of Rights says that this is unconstitutional and has filed a lawsuit.”

I presume you mean the feckless former Premier of NFLD Brian “loose cannon ” Peckford? He drifted in to far right nutterville years ago. Irrelevant, but you may have noticed he is actually using the courts as opposed to anarchy.

“The mandates will be gone one way or another.”

Yes, you are probably correct, Kreskin. My prediction? The rule of law and or the political system will dictate the timeline, not some puffed up aggrieved men-children with apparently waaay too much time on their hand who were co opted and duped by the anti vax nutters to carry the water

——————————-

It’s anti-mandate nutters and anyone who values freedom needs no duping or co-opting.

#221 slick on 02.07.22 at 11:30 pm

I just returned yesterday from a 12 day excursion to Fort myers FLA. I wore a mask at the duty free in windsor, and never put it back on until the duty free in detroit upon return. No one ever looked at us in disgust. the bars, restaurants, malls, pools, and beaches were full, except for fast foods that were closed for lack of staff. No distancing, just happy faces. Wide open, different world.

Car dealerships were full of shiny new vehicles. further north, they spread the cars out a little more to look full. Trucks rolled up and down I-75 like a railroad. Gas worked out to C$1.00 / liter. Lots and lots of construction. Bridges, buildings, roads, solar farms, etc.

Some news on tv about the trucker convoy. I didn’t realize how big it had gotten. No love lost for our leader.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGb6GeiuN0c

Garth, I respect your views on the ‘anti-vaxxers’. It is your sandbox, post what you want. But dragging these protesters down with name-calling ‘ Trump Patriots’ is petty. A tactic used by those with no facts left to use. Your words echo PM Socks. This BS about swastikas and confederate flags is being pumped out by our gov’t purchased left wing media.

Take some time off and just try to see this issue from the other side. Most are not anti-vax. They are tired of freedoms being smothered because the gov’t has no more levers to pull. We have been lied to, promised if we got to 70% herd immunity would do the rest. Then 80%,Hmmm 90% , not quite enough. Breakthrough infections on those with boosters. They are just trying to justify their decision to capitulate, by blaming the unvaccinated that their shot didn’t work.

Disclosure; I am double vaxxed, but only for 2 reasons, travel and family. I talked to a guy yesterday that has been dealing with blood clots since his 2nd shot. Almost lost his foot. I’m sure the hospital visit was deemed covid related.

#222 pete from st. cesaire on 02.07.22 at 11:55 pm

I see you mention the USA and it’s loosening of the restrictions. It’s easy to rile up anti-US sentiment amongst Canadians. You fail to mention that the vast majority of the world is dropping all (or virtually all) measures. The most notable being Britain. Where’s the ‘science’ now? In total disarray, that’s where.
I told you right from the beginning that Covid was NOTHING MORE than a cover story for a worldwide economic collapse and monetary system restructuring. If you would only look you would see that I am correct. I predicted this very thing over 10 years ago. That’s why I was on top of it on day one. Now it appears that the whole charade is falling apart. So now the question is: Have they done enough damage to the world economy to allow them to carry out the controlled collapse (essential to their plans) or must they resort to some Plan-B?
Is Plan-B the Ukraine, waiting in the wings?

#223 SecondBooster on 02.08.22 at 12:16 am

Breakthrough cases are everywhere at my work. Most of us are immune now.

#224 JED on 02.08.22 at 12:24 am

Look at Sweden. Protect those that need protecting. Keep businesses and the economy open. In and out of inconsistent restrictions and soft lockdowns do not work. Period. Vaccination rates are at herd immunity. Time to fully open up and move on. Enough.

#227 Shannon Winter on 02.08.22 at 12:41 am

We are a country of falling incomes and salaries while importing huge numbers of people. In fact we import more than the USA statistically.

Aside from all the Liberal night sweats and pearl clutching whenever immigration is spoken of, it’s a recipe for disaster if wages and salaries continue to fall while the costs of living here force more people into debt slavery and poverty. Amazon just doubled white collar salaries to $350,000, but not in Canada.

Housing affordability is not just international buyer scooping up titles. The human traffic that keeps wages and salaries the lowest in the G7 is an ‘Ottawa’ problem.

Look at your graph and compare Sweden with no mandates to Canada. Whoops that doesn’t fit the narrative.

Or compare NY state to Florida. Less deaths in Florida with no mandates. Facts sure suck don’t they.

Now do deaths in the 1st year of covid in Canada (or anywhere) with no vaccine compared to the 2nd year with a vaccine. Oops more people died since the vaccine came in.

I’m vaccinated btw but I respect someone’s right to choose and oppose all mandates. Science.

The graph you show paints a picture opposite of what you say. At the beginning of vaccination the US was vaccinating at a much higher rate and they led in deaths. Once vaccination kicked off in Canada we see Canada’s deaths going almost exponential before leveling off. The US has not yet leveled off. Countries with much lower vaccination rates like Japan are doing amazingly well. In the US it is inconclusive yet looking at Canada and Japan if vaccination was only factor we couldn’t come to your conclusion.

Garth, the irony of course is that, if people stopped arguing with you and took your (free) advice instead, they’d be so much better off. It amazes me that some people (e.g., Joe Rogan) think they’re so much smarter than subject matter experts.

#251 ReachAbove on 02.08.22 at 8:26 am

Thank you Garth – Your words have helped me a lot over the last decade. Even the new guys.

#252 David Gerald Paquette on 02.08.22 at 8:28 am

I really get annoyed by idiots who think they are better than me. But these people are better resourced me. I am glad that truckers made a stand. There is no reason they should be marginalized as deplorables and expendable. It is a fantasia they think they can survive without support. I get tired of “Karens” who are trying to prove their worth because of TINA (there is no alternative). We have too many who are overeducated and trying to find meaning.

Guess what? – I don’t buy it. In some ways I want to be John Wick – I will kill them all, it helps to be a loner. The truckers are the men and women who will fill the Armed Forces ranks to protect you. I will teach them how to survive. It helps to have no family worth dying.

It breaks my heart when people think they are more important over the ones that actually get things done.
I have listened to stories where politics gets in front of a mime. You could be wrong and suffer the consequences yet I learn who is willing to stab me in the back. I will not stand of people like them.

I will remind people that Poundmaker made a stand against against the ruling government of Canada and failed. He lost to an idiot called Middleton who had far greater resources including Gatling guns. Just points out the view that you have to be willing to fight or the elites will take everything you have. So will you pay. They were reduced to throwing rocks to the advancing to the CND troops – never again?

Never again – my masters may want to think again. We know where the policy against indigenous people went shortly after Poundmaker’s defeat – think Residual Schools. My aunts did the best they could.

I have little respect for most people who live on commissions or hind tit. It seems to cloud their view. I most of them live on a “Fee”. Must be nice to have people to eat your BS. I will give you points if you deliver.

Actually, as think I about it, many fathers went out and fought hard. It was still cold and wet. They got the job done despite the hardships and losses.

I do not enjoy seeing suffering. But then I go when it is the better cause that is served. One thing I liked was the Israel officers – motto, “Follow Me” They suffered horrific causalities, the IDF had to back off because victory taking their best men.

I hear/read that climatologists are now looking at water vapor as being the primary source of climate changes. What causes that I do not know. Then there is a report that most of the “graves” at the Kamloops residential school were tree roots. I have no doubt that abuses took place.

Jagmeet Singh has the gall to call the truckers protest an attempt to overthrow existing governments. A champion of the people – ha. Another socialist with soft hands. Here is a shovel, go prove to me what you are worth. Working outdoors, most lefties shiver at the idea thinking it is beneath them. IMO, that is where the wealth of Canada comes. Yes there are slack asses in this group too but they contribute far more than they take.

#255 RyYYZ on 02.08.22 at 9:24 am

This protest was never about truckers. Just look at who the organizers were – not truckers. These guys are being used for political ends.

See that Leger released a poll on the subject overnight. https://leger360.com/surveys/legers-north-american-tracker-february-8-2022/
Was a little surprised at the level of support for the convoy that it expressed (about 32% expressed strong or some support). Decided to take a look at the methodology for the poll:
===================
METHODOLOGY
This web survey was conducted from February 4 to February 6, 2022, with 1,546 Canadians and 1,005 Americans, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.

For comparison, a probability sample of 1,546 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.49%, 19 times out of 20, while a probability sample of 1,005 would have a margin of error of ±3.091%, 19 times out of 20.
===================
So, “randomly recruited from LEO’s online portal”, and also 40% of those polled were American. I don’t know about you, but I can’t say I really care too much what Americans think about this. The reporting on this poll didn’t mention that the respondents were 40% American.

Survey methodology seems like garbage to me, considering the subject.

#256 RyYYZ on 02.08.22 at 9:26 am

Sorry, re previous post – I see the number on the subject of the protest were (apparently) only taken from the Canadian respondents.

Still wondering about the selection of respondents, though.

“medias can’t see the difference between that and an actual scientific proof!”

And you can. – Garth

Actually I have a University scientific degree.

But it’s not about that, you don’t need a super brain to understand that science is not a result or a claim, it’s a process. It isn’t har to spot the different when you care to kook… When it comes to Covid or Climate in particular many claim to know the truth (and use it to ridicule and shut up others…), but if you just look at the process that led to those claims you’ll quickly know that we are far far away from a real scientific proof.

Should should be particularly suspicious when there are large bureaucracies, political interest and piles of money behind the so called science.

I’m just encouraging critical thinking and judgment, you do want you want with it, but the truth will eventually prevail.

However there is a problem. Covid is mutating because there is a vaccine. It’s like water, its going to find an alternate way in your system which is how the mutations are created.

Let’s all pray this somehow goes away soon either by science or by nature.

————————-

Boom get this man a cookie. When a vaccine or antibiotic fails eliminate the pathogen or bacteria effectively, the targets survive, thrive, mutate and then become resistant. Any knowledgeable and accredited PHD will confirm this. It’s happening right before our very eyes.

covid is never going away. like the spanish flu has never gone away. we need to shift our expectations and learn how to live with the virus. like i have said on here before… better hospitals and antivirals are the answer. we have had vaccines for a year and that has not worked. we need to add the two mentioned above to that list. those 3 tools in our pocket are the answer. that is how we get out of this. but hey, who is listening to me…?

Enjoy your time off Garth. I’m happy you are taking some time away. Take care of yourself. So many people I know are stepping back right now to catch a well needed breather. I’ve permanently deleted several FB friends in an effort to gain back some sanity and lower my BP. Anyone bleating about freedumb got the boot. It’s a cesspool of a platform in the best of times but, I still want to use it for community connections and relatives that live afar. I popped an Ativan one night just to stop my obsession and despair over the stupidity of this freedumb convoy and it broke the cycle for a time. I’m still gobsmacked though that law enforcement and some Premiers won’t do their jobs because of the inner and insidious rot from the right. Interesting times..unfortunately.

I have had (some not all) vaccines in my life. Here is the problem I have with Covid 19 vaccines:

1. It was never a choice between my job and jab with the other vaccines. No one asked or cared. Now private medical info which used to be shared between me and my doctor, is suddenly everyone’s business

2. After receiving Polio vax I never got Polio. Never got measles or mumps after MMR. But 42/50 people I know got Covid after being double and triple jabbed.

3. When I got H1N1 in 2009, doc said I was now immune for life. Never pushed the H1N1 jab on me. Covid jab being pushed on Covid recovered…why?

4. Segregation is never ok….especially in Canada

5. If the government can force someone to take a jab “for the good of society” what’s to stop them from forcing people to donate blood and organs “for the good is society”? Slippery slope

6. Out of all of my 2x and 3x jabbed coworkers and other contacts: 4 have newly diagnosed cancer, 2 neurological problem, 2 blood clots (have to be on blood thinners)…and 7, yes seven heart attack/stoke! All of these have occurred in the last year AFTER the jab roll out….what are the odds? Prior to this, I would hear of critical illness 1-2x/year.

7. Spoke to my life insurance rep last week and all cause mortality for 2021 is up 30-40% in prime age categories. This is higher than even 2020 when they only had a 5-10% spike (mostly over 75 yrs). When I became alarmed he reassured me that every policy holder could die and receive a payout and the company would still have $ leftover….however this mortality spike is unprecedented and they are monitoring the situation carefully.
