50

“Don’t write about us,” she said. “Just put the photo in. You can say something in the ‘About the picture’ caption. I’m sure that’s all people read on your blog anyway.”

And this is why I love her. She’s reality. Honesty and trust. She suffers me. We’ve now spent pretty much our entire lives together. The experiences were intense and the path often twisted. In and out of the public eye, in business and politics, lots of risks, fails and gains, dogs loved and lost. It’s hard to spend fifty years hand-in-hand with another person without absorbing them into your very being. Disagreements are inevitable, but they fade. Time makes it clear what matters and what does not.

If you can find one true friend in life, you’re lucky. I started early. She wouldn’t marry me at 19, but capitulated at 21. We’ve been poor and not poor. Elected and defeated. Employees and employers. Owners and renters. Hired and fired. Stable and lost. Sure and uncertain, over decades of swirling change. But together, always. The rest was just noise.

About the picture: “I’d like to capture this moment in time,” Dorothy said, as we mused on our awesome anniversary. “Something real.” So famed photographer Tony Hauser agreed to do it on the sidewalk in downtown Toronto, rearranging traffic cones and jostling pedestrians. She loved it. Even when a blog dog crashed the shoot.

The obvious investor action is also healthy. It might not yet be bottomed out, but it’s looking good. I’m buying.

Happy 50th Garth and Dorothy. It’s wonderful that some couples can make it that long! My parents are still together too… inspiring and adorable ;-)

However, even with that pink tie, Dorothy is much prettier than you! In fact, consider yourself lucky that some blog dawg crashed the photo shoot. I could see that pink tie doing far worse damage; for example, had Sail Away or Faron been in the hood at the time, they would have charged at you like a bull in heat!

Congratulations on 50 years of marriage. May you have many more years.

I like the photograph, anything but conventional, and a nice mix of elements. The body language suggests two people who are of like mind, who are independent, yet supportive of each other. No one is obviously pulling away and neither is dominant. Your photographer did a good job.

Italia tightening the screws on no-vaxer healthcare workers and Docs that should have been, by Gov decree, fully vaxd last year.

Nello Musumeci, Pres. of Sicilia, some not so kind advice:

https://i.imgur.com/oJYCa7R.png

A few Docs got the “notice” yesterday in my Region of FVG followed by a 1 yr suspension, no pay. Nello in retrospect was being kind after all.

All teachers, Profs, support staff, etc. in Education must be fully vaxd before school starts here in Italia.

Pretty sure the aforementioned was a salvo warning to them.

Gov Italia enforces its Covid decrees. Nice.

Here’s to you both – congratulations!

“Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved. ”

#147 AM in MN on 08.19.21 at 4:30 pm

Congrats to both of you. I especially admire the women who choose to stick around with those of us who don’t seem so stable…

Not to bring too much politics into this Garth, but this is a big sign that you are at heart much more of a social conservative than you admit to.

This is the heart of social conservativism.

In your long list, you didn’t mention leaning on the government or courts to deal with your personal problems and sort out the mess with all the step children, child support etc.

As I have mentioned before, you can’t be a fiscal conservative and a social progressive liberal, the two aren’t compatible.

Promoting life long marriage between husband and wife is at the heart of social conservatism, everything else is noise. The government wouldn’t have fiscal problems if it weren’t paying to be daddy to such a large segment of the population.

My parents going on 59 years soon, hopefully all the covid issues are behind us for a big 60th.

When I met my (to be) wife we discussed our extended families. At the time, not a single divorce among parents, siblings, aunt/uncles and first cousins. We got engaged a couple months after meeting. Our son has been to both sets of grandparents 50th, and that seems to put him in rare company these days, such a shame.

If you sign your kid up for some community sport or activity, all the forms always have places for separate mother and father addresses as that is the common assumption.

History shows that strong families are the best protection against weathering the storms of life, and I will never stop promoting that fact.

Congratulations, Garth and Dorothy!

Will add here some quotes from famous book written a couple of thousands years ago or so:
1. “There is no fear in love”
2. “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; It does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”

Dorothy is amazing! I absolutely love her for saying that stuff about the blog.

It reminds us (and Garth, but I’m sure you already know) that the opposite sex is vastly different. Venus and Mars stuff. This blog means NOTHING to her! It is mostly ridiculous, silly, but above all, a HUGE WASTE OF TIME. But she knows what it means to Garth. It could be a model train set, or a stamp collection – it doesn’t matter. It’s his hobby, and she loves NOT the hobby, but that he has one.

And we also know that if it was between Dorothy and this blog, the blog would go! LOL!

Thank you Dorothy for being so lovely.

Lots of good points and I agree, but still there is nuance.

I’m a Gen x that likes old school values, family, long term plans, second chances, forgiveness, happiness, truth, intellectual honesty, logic, tolerance, and being reasonable when it counts.

That does leave me taking up so-called “lefty” positions from time to time…

The longest marriage recorded (although not officially recognized) is an emerald wedding anniversary (90 years) between Karam and Kartari Chand, who both lived in the United Kingdom, but were married in India. Karam and Kartari Chand married in 1925 and died in 2016 and 2019 respectively.

Hang in there Garth and Dorothy. You can do break the record.

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to
him,
Though the sword hidden among his
pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in
him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he
crucify you. Even as he is for your growth
so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and
caresses your tenderest branches that quiver
in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and
shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto
himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred
fire, that you may become sacred bread for
God’s sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you
that you may know the secrets of your
heart, and in that knowledge become a
fragment of Life’s heart.

Happy 50th anniversary Dorothy and Garth! What a wonderful milestone, and this post is just the book jacket version. I’m sure there’s some fascinating stories along the way.

We just celebrated our 25th last month.

Congrats Garth and Dorothy. Great couple. Thanks for all you do. Garth, I’m forever grateful for your financial advice.

Enough, now, back to arguing about politics. Trudeau and his cabinet are a bunch of children and deserve to be kicked to the curb.

Congratulations! That is a real accomplishment.
Thank you for providing the such entertaining wisdom for so many years.

#273 westcdn on 08.20.21 at 1:26 am

One thing I think my new neighbor might share is we are both introverts with attitude. I will wait to see how that plays out.

I hesitated on the NXR.un IPO offering and missed out. I only wanted a couple hundred at best and did not how I would finance. I do already have hundreds of them so I can wait and still good management I trust.

I have said buying something today means I have to sell something. I do wish to get rid of my debt but it will take more than $500 per month over 10 years to get the job done.

Why do I care with cheap money? Just me and looking at the future.

#274 Jacko on 08.20.21 at 1:34 am

Congrats, of course. Poor girl.

#278 Sunny South on 08.20.21 at 6:03 am

A belated very happy 50th anniversary to you and Mrs.T., with wishes of many more years ahead.
Great photo but I have to wonder if it would have been better if it had included a furry friend. Down here in the sunny south, 84 rescue dogs were flown in from a shelter in El Paso, Texas over the weekend. From the photos I’ve seen, pretty sure there’s one that’s the right size, shape, colour and age for almost anyone.

#279 Jennifer on 08.20.21 at 8:21 am

Warm Congratulations to you and Dorothy on your 50th. I love these sorts of pieces. They make you think and reflect and remember what’s truly important in life. I will hit 25 years next year with my hubby and hope one day to make 50.

NP Snippet: Smart move O’toole. Get it out there in plain sight. And the Liberals helped him do it. Grazzi.

“The Liberals were probably planning to reach into their reserve and dust off abortion during week three of the campaign, when the fear mongering makes the deepest impact.

But then Erin O’toole did something that threw a wrench into that plan as well. During a campaign stop this week, O’toole unequivocally stated that if elected he would lead a pro-choice government and would ensure that abortion services are available to Canadians everywhere. He said it with confidence and credibility, and it is clear that he plans on saying it as much as needed.

For anyone who has been following O’toole closely, this statement would have come as no surprise. He has been clear that he is prochoice since his election as party leader.

But for the Liberal War Room, it was decidedly off script. Timing wise, abortion was making too early of an appearance on the campaign trail. But more importantly, there was zero ambiguity in O’toole’s statement, which for the Liberals, means no room to wedge.

A panic must have set into the Grit’s campaign HQ, as evidenced by Maryam Monsef’s incoherent eight-part twitter meltdown that came hours after O’toole made this statement. ”

Quebec is going to come on side. Conservative minority at a minimum.

Congratulations Garth and Dorothy,

I have to agree with Dorothy and how the steerage comments on the dog photos but I also have been reading this blog and I looked forward to not only the great advice but the funny photos not of dogs but more fails of the people.

I still have a memory etched in my grey matter of the carpenter cutting his rough 2nd floor 2×4’s lengthways flush but having his body on the side where he would fall to the ground if he continued to cut his intended line!

Thanks again, onwards to 51, kampai!

There’s nothing partisan about decency.

A big issue with warring parties is the rejection of good ideas just because they are supported by the ‘enemy team’.

Everybody should keep their own counsel. Accept or reject positions on the merits of those positions, not because of some party line.

Agreed…common good should be the pillar for democracy. More recall legislation is needed to keep folks honest and focused on upholding the integrity of our institutions.

Married 3 times and none lasting longer than 3 years and swore off women forever. Twelve years of that and Ottilia met me in a bus station in Hungary. Been traveling the same route for 18 years since – we’re inseparable and I ask myself almost daily “How did this happen?” She’s a gem and loves me fiercely.
