The end

The RCMP constable, Justin, was kind.

“I know it wasn’t just a flag,” he said, staring at the empty, void wall of the wee bank. “Not to you.”

Overnight, vandals and thieves cut the cords supporting my Peace Tower prize, ripped it down and stole it. Maybe the flag’s in the harbour now. Or burned. Or waiting to show up as a trophy on a #cancelCanadaDay social media post.

On Monday the crew installed it, the fourth year this banner has graced my building. On Tuesday anti-Canada, pro-Indigenous folk took to Facebook to call me a racist and ‘white privileged’ for having a flag displayed. On Wednesday cardboard protest signs emerged. Yesterday afternoon young women came into my private office to call me a ‘settler.’ My corporate email was jammed by others – all women, coincidentally. Their demands to have the flag removed came with a veiled threat. This, from Joelle…

Do the right thing. Issue the apology. I promise you taking it down and reneging on your stance will be less harmful than keeping it up.

Of course, the flag stayed. Even after I received an email from a Town official. Take the flag down, please, it requested.

We hope that you will understand that such an image, at this particular moment in time, is harmful for members of our community. In light of this the Town has paused Canada Day celebrations.

Never, I replied, would I have imagined the Canadian flag would be considered a ‘harmful image’. I stood my ground. Others at Town Hall were caught in this political squeeze. Tensions rose. And the flag stayed.

This morning by eight it was gone. Cords severed. Bits of the flag remained overhead where it had been ripped off the mounting screws. Considerable effort would have been required, as the flag is (was) at least thirty feet across and took four men to install.

The RCMP came. Photos and emails were handed over. Cpl. Justin went down the street looking for possible video footage. I stood there, empty, betrayed and saddened. I am sure it was as the protestors wished. Erasing, cancelling, toppling, burning, defacing and bullying are their tools – to make everyone think as they do. Such irony that they believe this is the path to diversity, inclusiveness and reconciliation.

I posted this on the door.

The Flag.

Early on Canada Day the national flag which was on this building over the last few days, and had flown above the Peace Tower in the presence of Queen Elizabeth, was torn down and stolen. The flag is large, historic, irreplaceable and carries a great deal of meaning.

Many people have wanted to cancel Canada Day for reasons we all know. That is understandable, and it’s their right not to celebrate.

It is not their right, however, to prevent others from believing what they do, loving their country, feeling gratitude for living here and working for a better future. Nobody has the right to steal from or intimidate others.

Canada is a jewel in the world. Not perfect, by any means. Those who use violence and bullying tactics, from burning churches to toppling public statues or stealing a cherished flag, make us less perfect.

This is a sad day for me. As the vandals had hoped, I am sure. May they find perspective later in their lives.

Hi Garth, I’m absolutely disgusted this vandalism happened. Let them move to Yemen, Syria, mainland China, etc to let them realize how fortunate they are to live in Canada.

If they attempted a stunt like that there, they would never seen again.

Antifa I wonder?

Happy Canada Day!

And I hope you try again next year with an even bigger flag.

Sorry, Garth. For some reason, I expected different (and better) from Lunenburg. Nobody believes this is the path to ”diversity, inclusiveness and reconciliation”, but some do believe it is the path to getting what they really want.

I’m sorry to hear about all this, Garth. I admired your stance and views as a early 30’s mill. You were teaching the true meaning of being an open-minded Canadian.

I wonder what these people’s wishes are. ‘Return’ the land of Canada to the first nations and send everyone else “home”? Abolish the flag altogether and just replace it with something you can scan on your phone for extra Shopper’s Optimum points?
I am truly puzzled.

In any case, I hope something positive comes from this, for you and all of us. Whether it’s the flag back, or some people tarred and feathered.

Happy Canada Day Garth & blogdogs. Hug your family & scratch your dog’s belly. Choose to live in a great country & add to it’s greatness. Stealing a flag solves nothing.

#9 crowdedelevatorfartz on 07.01.21 at 10:25 am

I wondered if that flag was high enough off the ground to be accessible from the mob that has become the deciders of ||”acceptable free speech” in this country.

If you have any other flags.
Hang them up.

First it was statues of the builders of this country….now its Canadian flags…..on Canada Day.

Whats next?

Garth, I’ve gotten to know you personally on Blog articles, firing back and forth emails and so forth…you are:

Decent. Above reproach. Salt of the Earth. Our higher self.

Garth, I disagree on the jewel part (once was).

Until Trudeau et. al. and his minions, lap sucklers that have arisen in lower forms of Government are let to run amok, expect more dark days like yesterday.

Though I admire your unsinkable nature.

As for me HAPPY CANADA DAY, the flag theft was stupid, but a sense of country and love for it is in a person’s heart, their mind.

That they cannot steal.

My Tweet today was a great big Wikipedia Canadian Flag (I donate to them every year) with the above words in caps.

I owe Canada everything and will continue to thank her to my dying days.

The world has lost true leadership and perspective, with accountability becoming a lost art.

We’ve provided the populist with safety nets that have soften them and removed the natural instinct to survive so our fearless leaders don’t need to really do anything and never held accountable.

My father, an immigrant went back home years ago to visit and was asked if he missed the old country, with a smile, he said not one bit and went on to explain that Canada has provided more opportunities than he could’ve ever dreamed of. Is Canada perfect? It depends on your perspective, however compared to most other countries we’re pretty damn close to perfection.

Happy Canada Day everyone.

I’m really sorry. Canada Day is Canada Day and while I can understand not wanting to celebrate it this year, tearing down our nation’s flag is disgraceful.

For me, we are not celebrating Canada Day today however we are gathering with family and having honest conversations about our nation’s history, starting with the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. There is no place in this day and age for violence and destruction of property. Just terrible.

Enjoy your day, Garth. Haters gonna hate.

This makes me sad, many of these people that think cancelling Canada day is the solution, but how many of them are truely trying to help. Likely only a very few. It’s easier to just protest a day then to actually do something. People post a meme, make a comment about how outraged they are, just go back to their regular life once the initial shock wears off, and in then end make no changes.
Happy Canada day Garth! We stand with you.

#33 Millennial Realist on 07.01.21 at 10:49 am

We are indeed in challenging times, as Garth’s tough experience today illustrates.

It’s probably wise to consider just how tough things have been for the less-advantaged others in this land for so many years, many generations before 2021.

Please have a listen to this song. By a true Canadian artist, born in this land. Even though she does not share the gender, age or skin colour of 95% of you reading here today, she is a great treasure. Feel free to smile, and feel determined at the same time.

This is about being part of the change. Enjoy this on July 1 and after.

The lyrics are profound in today’s context.

Running

Jully Black

We belong to each other
And we are the people
Sharing all different races
‘Cause we are all equal
Can’t forget there’s a fight now
We don’t need a sequel
We just gotta keep moving
Supporting is crucial
So get ready I’m running
Yes I’m running for the right now
Can’t stop me ’cause I’m running (Running)
Yes I’m running for the fight now
Won’t stop me ’cause I’m running (I’m running)
Hey, hey, hey…
Can’t stop me ’cause I’m running (Running)
Hey, hey, hey…
Won’t stop me ’cause I’m running
Our liberty and our freedom
Is what we should stand for
The situation is hostile
And people need answer
Seconds away from rebellion
We gotta do something
Everyone knows you can change this
But you keep on hiding and denying
‘Cause I’m running
Yes I’m running for the right now
Can’t…

#44 James on 07.01.21 at 11:03 am

Dear Garth,
To you, an individual who has served this country well I commend your capability to hold back any antagonism at the individuals that orchestrated this illegal operation in the name of justice. Justice is not served by stealing someone’s property. While the atrocities committed by our previous elected officials and the church in charge of the native peoples is horrible and grievous this is not the way to right a wrong. It will only inflame one side verses another. If we break down into burning, looting and stealing then we regress back into a degenerate uncivilized society and that was not the intention of the creation of Canada. We can help to heal wounds with a fresh government approach that seeks to not cancel history but to update it and correct errors. I hope that your flag is recovered as it has a great meaning to you.
Someone stole my tiny Canadian flag several days ago off my porch and I replaced it then turned my security camera towards the front porch and left a friendly note for the thief. If you want to steal this one please smile your on camera! So far so good.

Telling all the world we’re willing
To welcome them to this great land
For that’s what Canada is.

We’re ready for tomorrow
We have faith in our children
For our future’s in their hands
We have a voice that is calling
Telling us to keep on hoping
For time will make this wild land great
And that’s what Canada is.
Canada is the Rocky Mountains
Canada is Prince Edward Island
Canada is a country made for love
Canada is La Belle Provence
Canada is the Yukon Mine
Canada is a country loving peace.
We have peace in our valleys
We’re happy and contented
We have peace in our cities
And our boundaries have no chains
We have a voice that is calling

It’s events like this that makes me lose any respect for protesters, no matter the cause, acts like this just makes me very angry. Vandalism and cancel cultures are only going to piss people off more and more, and you’ll lose any empathy that you want for such causes.
In this case, there is still no proven evidence that the government of Canada was involved or aware of these atrocities. There is also no evidence of who is buried there and when they were laid to rest there.
Oh, so let’s all jump and scream like toddlers until facts are provided.
Nevertheless, the sins of the past should not shadow what Canada is today. Most of us are proud to be Canadians, no matter where we came from.

If these woke clowns wanted to take the flag down, at least they could keep it safe and then return it later in one piece. Leave it at the front door or something. Truly disrespectful clowns.

Isn’t disrespecting national flag in anyway an offence?

Sorry to read this Garth, as it is a setback for our Country to have some who will force their opinion on others. This is especially difficult to understand, when one reflects, on the fact that your intentions, were honorable, and positive, with all the challenges, of the past 15 months.
In my opinion Canada, should be celebrating every facet of our lives, after the CV debacle. How can a Nation turn on itself, and promote failure, and all the past indiscretions. Happy Canada Day, Garth!

I hope you will not allow some vandals to unmake this day for you.

Sorry that you were victimized. I am not sure when people are going to wake up and realize that these “protestors” are really just thugs with nothing better to do. They seem incapable of standing for anything, instead just stand against everything. They are incapable of providing good to society so instead they tear it down. We are witnessing the downfall of civilized societies, we will fall in chaos and disorder as this behavior is cheered by more. In the end they may get their wish, we may not celebrate Canada day in the future but not because of their reasons. We may not celebrate in the future because the society they are turning Canada into will no be one to be celebrated…

Sad day for you and sorry for your loss. Know that the silent majority stand with you and appreciate your stand!

Thank you Mr Turner, for standing up to this bullying nonsense.
The climate we are in today–whether it be the minor apprehension of triggering a harangue from an especially self-righteous relative on facebook, or the not-so-minor fear of damage to self or property–is utterly, irredeemably toxic. I cannot see how it can end well.
Also, it never ceases to amaze me how these people seem to believe that their cause would be served by undermining the legitimacy of the Canadian state. There are other, more nastier people in the wings (especially out West, unfortunately) who are salivating at that very prospect. How can they not see this?

#83 Another Deckchair on 07.01.21 at 11:59 am

Garth; as I write this, the Snowbirds flew overhead.

Sun Tzu: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

You know the enemy, and you know yourself.

Many years ago I had a good conversation with a lawyer at the war crimes tribunal in The Hague. I asked him “how come war crimes are always charged on the side that lost?”

The answer was that there exist mean, deranged people that use the cover of war for furthering their actions. These are the people who are criminal, not those following orders.

The “woke” have no idea why they are being played, and who is playing them. They will end up feeling betrayed by their leadership when the final hand is dealt. Count on it.

#84 I’m stupid on 07.01.21 at 12:02 pm

If you’re up for it Garth… I will send a Canadian flag to you. Not big but if enough people send small ones it will create the same message. We will not be bullied into submission. More than twenty years ago, I came to this country, a young and naïve girl who grew up under communism. As the years passed, I have learned a lot and I have seen a lot but I have never regretted my decision to move here. It is a beautiful country with kind-hearted people and boundless natural wonders. It is one of the best places on Earth to live.

Despite the current world madness, despite the ugly past of humanity, this is the place I want to be today and there is nowhere else I’d rather be.

As a country of immigrants, of people coming from different backgrounds, we need a reminder of what connects us all. United we stay, divided we fall. And today is the day to remember it!

Happy Canada Day!

#87 Stoph on 07.01.21 at 12:04 pm

Such behaviour is absolutely unacceptable – first to threaten you and then to steal from you. I would feel violated if I were you.

I wouldn’t want to be the perpetrator(s) and face the possibility of being arrested for such a stunt.

Hopefully good comes out from all of this and you are still able to enjoy the rest of the day’s festivities you have planned.

#88 Cici on 07.01.21 at 12:04 pm

Very sad and very pathetic indeed.

But now we understand the real reason these thugs don’t want the Canadian flag to fly: it represents freedom, unity and solidarity, the very foundations of which serve to crush radical, fascist discourse and actions.

I wonder how many of these so-called pro-Indigenous activists are actually Indigenous? I ask because I grew up with, and still know, many amazing and brilliant Indigenous people who, while concerned about rectifying the sins of the past, invest their energy in education, raising positive awareness, building and strengthening their communities and sharing their pride, talents, triumphs and experiences to benefit other people and communities. Shaming, hate, destruction and robbing other communities of their voices and history were not part of their agenda or discourse, and as far as I can see, that hasn’t changed.

I bet there are a lot of Indigenous people who have been negatively impacted by the recent and painful discovery of unmarked graves, but are waiting patiently to find out what actually happened rather than “invent the past” as an excuse to violate, rob, threaten, bully pillage and destroy. The people I knew and grew up with encouraged healing and true reconciliation as well as strengthening the image of their communities in order to get the respect, honour and dignity they so very deserved.

I have a bad feeling that many of these voices of dissidence are actually those of failed, self-righteious white-priviledged fascists who feel the need to raise their voices on behalf of people who are quite capable of speaking for themselves. It would be a real shame if non-Indigenous “Wokers” were actually working to the detriment of the people they thought they needed to “protect.”

To those who are still asleep and don’t realize what is happening: the people who hate us are at war with us and will tear down everything that is dear to us and everything that is/was great about this country, if we let them.

It’s time to stop being politically correct and take a stand for what matters to you: western liberal democracy, freedom, truth, civility, law and order, a merit based society, equality of opportunity not equity of outcome.

If we don’t stand and fight for what’s right, this country will be torn apart and Balkanized and/or turned into the next communist dictatorship.

Condolences on the loss of an important piece of this country’s history.

#102 Arm chair economist on 07.01.21 at 12:20 pm

I have never had a desire to fly a flag, but now I want to. Canadian politicians spend too much time shaming and apologizing for dead people. Algorithms are destroying the social fabric. The right keeps denying facts and science. The left has no fiscal discipline.

When politicians capitalize on shame, it enables people who want to thrust their beliefs on others. For the first time ever there is no party I would want to vote for.

#103 JakeR on 07.01.21 at 12:20 pm

I am very sorry to hear about what they did to the flag and your business.

I am generally left-leaning (so why am I here?). I look south of the border at the sheer craziness of the Republican Party and want to think it will never affect the left. Sadly, acting this way is common to political extremists in general. All of that time and energy could have gone to doing something positive or productive.

A couple of decades ago the Bloc Quebecois would help constituents who wanted a Canadian flag. It probably stuck in their craw but they still did it. I blame social media bubbles as part of the problem. If everyone you talk to thinks this is okay, then it must be popular and okay, right?

#112 Do we have all the facts on 07.01.21 at 12:32 pm

I no longer recognize this Country. We have become divided into self centred interest groups that are committing crimes to advance their perspective of Justice.

The Canada I grew up in tolerated a wide range of perspectives without submitting to criminal acts. Maybe I led a sheltered life but criminal activity was not seen as a path to change when I was growing up.

Civil disobedience in the name of changing our history is getting out of hand. No country has evolved without suppressing the rights of certain groups. Canada has developed a legal framework to protect the rights of all citizens and we should be proud of this achievement.

There are channels to initiate change and committing criminal acts is not one of them.

How did we get a justice system that protects those who deliberately undermine our democratic rights and encourages them to extremes that they know they won’t be punished for? Garth, now do you see it, finally? This isn’t a minority group. First orchestrated against men, then whites, then westerners. Meanwhile China pusses men to be more masculine. We feminize ours, they toughen theirs. Our country has been sold. We are occupied. Now all the kids indoctrinated with anti-western hate, self hate, are into office. Bought, sold to the Chinese. The liberal party, and many others are highly occupied, at every level of education. Owned. There is no balance. Media is owned too, all of it. There are only dim voices to be heard – but these are only Trumpers, and far right extremists – white supremacist. China destroyed us from within…they told us they would. JT is the first and foremost – he sold Canada. We are Chinese. We are communist.

Canada is cancelled. Get used to the new system. It’s inevitable.

Covid was and is a tool of western oppression. It was made to speed up the process of loss of freedom and liberty and reliance on the government. Expect more – it’s working. Freedom is lost.

Start fighting Garth. Or go rouge individual. The only solution left is to go – as – one – single – person. The bait is the collective. Freedom is the individual.

I am a non-priviledged female with very working-class roots, raised by a family of hard-working immigrants (on both sides) who came to Canada to work their a$$es off so that there children would have a better future than they did.

These immigrants were very loud and proud supports of indigenous peoples and made it their goal to raise my sister and I to be tolerant and non-racist.

I have never been or associated with the alt-right, nor will I ever. HOWEVER, I used to consider myself a bit left of center, and always voted that way too. These days; however, I find myself leaning further and further away from the woke, but not awake, leftzis and am hanging out the center. In the worst case scenario, if this ABSOLUTE BS TYRANNY continues, I may just move a little bit more right, and vote that way too.

My grandparents and great grandparents were proud pioneers and proud settlers. They came here, settled the land, built their own homes, raised families, and built a country. I am not ashamed of that. I will never be ashamed of that. Some people lost out in the bargain. I will not feel shame for that either.

This country is full of opportunities. Take advantage of them. Or wallow in pity over what happened to your ancestors. Or wallow in fashionable guilt over your own “settler” history. That is your choice. But that isn’t how countries are built. It’s how they are destroyed from the inside. Accomplish that and you’ll have something else to feel guilty about.

Freedom of speech is a Canadian right; you can even desecrate the flag. However, you must bring your *own* flag: Canada is also supposed to be governed by rule of law, and I hope that the perpetrators of this crime soon discover what that means, to the detriment of their future employment and international travel.

#136 CJohnC on 07.01.21 at 1:06 pm

I have been expecting this exact post on Canada Day for a week now. It was a given that the flag would be stolen. I’m almost surprised (and thankful) that your building is still standing.

Justin Trudeau’s brown shirts are out of control with their destructions. The burning of churches, the cancelling of Canada Day celebrations, and now your priceless flag. Through this of course Trudeau’s silence condones the woken and wanton destruction.

Please continue your celebration of Canada and Canada Day despite your loss.

#137 Galt on 07.01.21 at 1:11 pm

When will the Nuremberg trials begin for the Government of Canada. No government would ever convict its own politicians of crimes against humanity. Every politician in Canada collecting a taxpayer salary up to and including 1997 is guilty.

Let’s put them all on trial. Every MP, MPP and Lawmaker should face the world court on charges of genocide.

Sorry, Mr. Turner, but your recent blogs on this topic and the huge wave of one-sided reader comments here today demonstrate just how much this blog can become an alt-right, mostly white, male-dominated, class-privileged echo-chamber when it comes to social issues.

************************
Of course, the comments are one-sided you ninny.
You don’t need to be an rich white dude to know that what the criminals did is objectively wrong.

Did you expect half of the comments to be
“Go vandals go! Down with freedom, let hate prevail!”?

You might hate yourself and your country enough to tear down someone else’s flag, but most of us don’t regardless of gender/race/class.

#140 DON on 07.01.21 at 1:20 pm

Garth

I am sorry to hear about the vandalism. Bullying tactics are not useful in reconciliation of any kind.

Doing something meaningful takes listening and understanding etc to state the obvious.

There is a lot of pent up anger and I understand people need to vent. We should acknowledge that wrongs that were committed and ‘remember’ to never allow this to happen on our watch again. They were children. All children deserve our protection.

Happy ‘Canada Day’ Garth and fellow bloggers ..!!

Garth, it certainly ain’t right what occured, and we are sorry for the loss of your spectacular and storied flag.

It would not have happened in China or Russia, without far more serious repercussions than a fine, if caught.

But let us celebrate, folks .. here’s the link to the Government of Canada website re our national flag.
I learned a lot, enjoy please and let us all be proud:

My God Garth – I am dumbfounded. This act of stealing the flag from your building is absolutely reprehensible. I know how much that flag meant to you – it was not just a flag. It is a symbol of our country – O Canada – the True North – Strong and Free . I wonder if it is anymore…. Does lowering the flag half mast – like they are doing on the Hill – mean we are mourning the loss of our Country. Have we been bought and sold and do not know it yet….. with all this cancel culture….So a new culture came come in and take over – never have I seen this well organized – lock step loss of freedoms. I told my husband I was truly scared of what was happening. My husband and I live in Lunenburg on the First Peninsula and we read your blog everyday. We see you have your house for sale. After this act we are thinking of leaving Lunenburg too. I know you are gutted. Our biggest problem is where would we go – this craziness is worldwide – Where does one move to- to live in peace and quiet and retain theirs freedoms – we thought Lunenburg was it ….until today. We hope you find your flag and we hope you do fireworks tonight. We support you – the quiet majority it seems….we tend to vote with our wallets .. Lunenburg will not see any more support from us. Keep your chin up and enjoy your Chow. “Illegitimi non carborundum” Don’t let the bastards grind you down.

#146 Ballingsford on 07.01.21 at 1:28 pm

My heart is with you Garth! Saddened to think people take things to the extreme like this.
Happy Canada Day! Still doing fireworks tonight, or did they steal them too?

#147 Linda on 07.01.21 at 1:28 pm

If the goal of the protestors was to gain publicity, given the wide audience of the blog they succeeded. If their goal was to make folks feel shame for flying the Canadian flag they failed. Ours is facing the public street & has been on display since June 23rd. We will continue to fly it & celebrate Canada Day.

My words to those who did the deed – two wrongs do NOT make a right. Defacing, destroying & demanding others give up their cultural symbols, heritage etc. will not fix the wrongs of the past. It just perpetuates them. Congratulations – you have become exactly what you proclaim you despise. However, given that you knew going in the harm you do makes your behavior even more despicable than those whose world view perpetuated the injustices of the past. Peace & reconciliation isn’t achieved by repeating their actions.

#148 Flag on 07.01.21 at 1:29 pm

“ Nobody has the right to steal from or intimidate others.

I respect you Garth, what you do and and how you do it. But perhaps we can all see the words you post about a flag surely cut deeper for those who’s land was taken.

It’s a complicated issue. But I always feel that the main way to be respectful to each other is to ensure our freedoms don’t trample on those of others. Freedom is as much a responsibility as it is a privilege. We forget this.

Don’t ride your noisy hog through the quiet hood you don’t live in to celebrate your motorcycling freedom. And perhaps keep in mind that the celebration this year has that same ring.

#149 G on 07.01.21 at 1:35 pm

Can some one out there help find our blog host a new flag?

It won’t be the same but I hope you can receive a replacement flag from the same flag pole soon.
(I’d send you the one I once had but I loaned it out to someone? to use years ago and it never got back to me.)

Your note on the door about it going missing/stolen is much more neutral than I would have been able to write.

I also agree with #1 and #93 and most likely other too, I haven’t read all comments.
I hope they are able to find the people that did it.
They must have some bad wiring for some reason, hopefully they can work on fixing it as the grow older. It’s ok to have different wiring,
but if you personally physically/enable affect/harm others knowingly don’t be surprised when…
You were just fallowing orders is no defence.

I wonder if local/all elected people will wake up and realise that if they say nothing no one will be left to help them when they are the only ones left.
I’d guess they mist the history classes???

Garth I hope you have great weather for your fireworks show and your Canada day celebrations are still fun! despite the missing flag.

My first thought is, well the old guy didn’t bust an artery over this, thank Dog in heaven.

Some stress test though!

Over here in SWNS, I really do think that vandals would have put up a flag in the middle of the night, not the other way around. Lunenburg is too close to the city life.

#155 ogdoad on 07.01.21 at 1:47 pm

Sorry, Garth. That flag meant a lot to you and it is truly an act of cowardice.

What these people stand for is NOT Canadian. I have problems trying to define what true Canadian values are but i know that burning churches, taking down statues and flags is not one. Nor will it be one in my household. You can stand up for what you believe without destroying and defacing or taking anything away from current issues. Those are leaders. The others are path-less without the knowledge to know better or the foresight to predict the consequences. These are rash acts of aggression and poor decision making – maybe venting after a year of pent up pandemic stress or realizing that life is just a ‘like’ on social med. to them. And since everyone else is doing it now their enabled.

There will most certainly be remorse (unless they have no soul) and retribution will come but for now be just another video on YouTube.

Lot’s of luck with the works tonight.

Don’t change Garth.

With any luck they will be caught and prosecuted. Fortunately most criminals aren’t very smart.

Where does it stop, do they want the Canadian flag removed from the Olympic athletes uniforms, or the flag not raised if one of our athletes wins gold.

Our flag is fully raised here at home today, yet my family have worn orange t-shirts as well. Can’t someone support both at the same time. Why judge and assume you had chosen one over the other. Jumping to such a conclusion is unfair.

Isn’t disrespecting national flag in anyway an offence?

———————————————-

No. You can buy a flag and burn it if you want: political speech is protected by the Charter.

However, private property is protected by statute in Canada. Under the criminal code, mischief is the charge for a behaviour that ” obstructs, interrupts or interferes with any person in the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property.” Like having a flag displayed on your building.

Cowards, hypocrites…

Coming from former colonised country, I view with detachment the cowardice and double standards of these leftist wokes.. blaming dead people of the past, ruining symbols of a great country of the present but calling for zero action against the institution responsible for enabling such crime.. an institution that existed in the very same past and continues to exist it the very same future.. the very same institution that continues to have the same schools but this time paid for by the tax payers secular dollar…

Unless this institution faces inquiry, is asked to pay for reparations and face consequences such as disbanding of said schools, all of this tokenism of dismantling statues, burning flags etc amount to nothing and are just acts of cowardice and rank hypocrisy not willing to deal with the real problem..

#161 fishman on 07.01.21 at 1:55 pm

Never saw that coming. Even though I kept reiterating revolutionaries won’t stop till they eat their own. I didn’t want to believe we’d come this far. A bucolic little maritime village innocence defiled. Women instigating direct action by revolutionary young men so they can get laid. All depressing this Canada day morning. Another descending step into the cellar. A dark cellar where scores are settled by hired criminals. Wokesters will discover that when “rules’ are suspended it doesn’t mean just the rules for the enlightened making the world a better place. It means all rules. Replaced by jailhouse rules. The underworld. A cruel world where our rules are all upside down. Their rules rule. A nasty brutal set of rules.

A historic flag was torn down and defaced. In response, I hung a regular Canadian flag in my front window. Next year I will hang a giant flag which flew over Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. My response is inadequate but it is something. Canada is not perfect, no country is. It is a great country and we can make it even better by remembering our past, celebrating our strengths and continuing to improve as a nation.

But, a new flag could help build new memories. I assure anyone who chooses to donate that all funds will be delivered to Garth somehow (minus gofundme’s fees). First $50 will come from me. If you don’t like who this is coming from, but like the idea, please set up your own. You may donate completely anonymously.

1. Setup gofundme to buy a new 20’x30′ flag. $2,500 or so.
2. Attend Lunenburg’s Canada Day 2022. Organize watchdog shifts around the clock. Gain support from local service and civic organizations.

Never thought I’d say this (given your propensity to denigrate the BC NDP Horgan and Eby for no reason), but I stand with you on this one. These people are vandals, similar to those who needlessly block major intersections at rush hour and the Lion’s gate bridge to screw over all those citizens just trying to get home to their families after a hard days work. If there is no push back from law enforcement on this, these groups will escalate their behavior. I realize full well that climate change is occurring and in our household we are reducing waste, cutting down on driving, and upgrading the home heating system. I don’t need a bunch of misfits blocking the intersection of Georgia and Granville street at rush hour to remind me of this.

I am so sorry to read the news about the theft of your flag, Garth. Canada is not perfect but it is the best country in the world and I am so proud to be a citizen of it. Fly the flag proudly – and yes, at half mast now in mourning for the children buried in unmarked graves. What happened at the institutions (can’t call them schools) was criminal and should be prosecuted as such. My heart aches for the victims, the survivors, and their families.

#180 I'm Alright Jack on 07.01.21 at 2:19 pm

Very sad, Garth, but not unexpected in this country formerly known as Canada. When you get a bunch if ‘woke’ politicians like Mr Socks basically egging the lunatic fringe on, this is what you get. Only some opinions matter, it appears.

Maybe your town council will be happy with the renaming of the town as ‘Loonyberg’, a suitable eastern bookend to this country. (Is it a country anymore – and what should it be called? Maybe just a big ‘X’ to avoid controversy, but I’m sure even this would be a controversy, with every faction fighting for their own letter choice. Best to go with a native name, if they could ever come to concensus).

The western bookend is, of course, Victoria, soon to be renamed by its fearless city council as ‘Wokeville’. Around here in BC, churches (and small towns) are burning, with nary a word from the woke politicians.

———-

Same, here. I grew up with poor Ojibwe’s and later with well-off Mohawk’s. None were the slightest bit woke. I got a pretty good idea on the demographics of those who would have Garth think more like them – by force.

In the same vein, I’ve never met a woke non-western immigrant in my life – not a single solitary one.

At the very least, Canada needs to slam these thugs in jail, or flood the country with non western immigrants…

CRIME FLAGGING POSSIBILITIES:

Let us round up all the usual suspects.

1. Jane Q. Public. Sadly, this is a very real possibility. It is a BIG RED FLAG that people all across the land are going crazy these days, and women always were a bit crazy to begin with. All the televised anti-Canada propaganda could have induced a mass psychosis in all these hordes of crazy women and incited them to do all sorts of formerly unthinkable things, such as remove flags that do not belong to them. (If Garth thinks that this evaluation of women is too strong, just wait till he sees how they trash his building, his social media, and his life now.)

2. A transgender “woman.” The red flag theft incident could have possibly been the doing of one big, masculine, transgender “woman” athlete. They can do the work of four little, feminine, transgender “men.”

3. Garth Turner, suspect. I hope we can somehow manage to rule out the only other possibility, which nobody seems to want to talk about. I hope this is not just another one of those many “false flag” incidents that we hear about all the time these days. The current custodian of a famous flag displays it to pretend that he is patriotic (even though he is socially liberal), and then for the free publicity takes it down in the middle of the night to pretend that he is the victim of oppressed, freedom-fighting feminists with too much time on their hands. (This is what all the really clever politicians would do and not just let Canada Day be wasted.)

@Tony Lorenz

First, breath. Second, copy what you just wrote down and look at it when you’re older. Third, get educated, flow through the system and make changes when you’re powerful enough.

’till then, fix your mind, dood. Walk in the forest, stay off the internet, have your amygdala removed…you’ll get what you want in time

#197 To the point. on 07.01.21 at 2:49 pm

#82 Marcia M, you have a point.

No one here condones theft and vandalism but as Mark Twain defined it: “Patriot: the person who can holler the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about.”

Flags and statues are always emblematic of their time. They always end up on the dust bin of history. Ever wonder what the world’s museums have stockpiled in their basements and backyards?

Everyone, but especially conservative-minded folk, need to pay attention to what’s happening out there. You don’t have to fear change. When it comes to black lives, indigenous lives, everyone’s’ lives, the unspeakable is FINALLY being spoken of.

Consider that you may have been lied to – a paradigm of willful omission. Consider that First Nations were not “savages”. Consider that enslaved Africans built much of North America’s economy. Consider why one per cent of the population has accumulated such wealth and power.

Sure, shoot off your fireworks on July 1 and July 4 but wake up from the delusion that change can’t happen.

I watched the same 22 minute( apparently the rest is commercials?) clip of the heavily edited 6pm 1 hour News from June 30th and at no point in the clip did they show a “Breaking News” clip.
It happened about 6:40pm

Breaking News!
Chris Gaius said “Lillooet was being evacuated because of a wildfire.”
Which I thought was odd but ok.

Wouldnt expect Global to repeat another of Gailus’s endless screw ups now would you?
It’s called “editing”.

Flop has it…wash the entire building with a projected flag from a willing participant across the street. Static or video or both.

Nice passive aggressive way to frost their Wheaties.

And in addition to Cici’s and IHCTD9’s thoughts at #88 and #185…me too.

And in other news, I was the subject of road rage the other day. Parking lot rage actually. I stopped to allow pedestrians including a young mother pushing a stroller to cross, not at a marked crosswalk but still… in a mall parking lot.

Guy behind me laid on the horn, sped around me, cut me off and parked such that I was stuck, He got out of his vehicle and approached mine yelling, gesturing, spittle forming at the corners of his mouth. Couple of ineffectual slaps on my fender and window. My wife was freaking out but my old CIA training kicked in. I just casually pointed out my dash camera to him, smiled and otherwise didn’t engage at all but wishing we had the bear spray canister in the vehicle, he was real close to deserving a face full.

Somewhere around 45-55, sox in crocs, cargo shorts, blown out ruddy red nose from alcohol abuse, thin hair really poorly cut. Must be fun being him. Reminded me of some of the posters on here, going absolutely nuts over nothing at all.

#147 Flag, those whose land was taken died many years ago. Not one person alive today had land stolen. My ancestors may or may not have been dealt a crappy hand. I don’t even know , and it matters not a bit to me. If your grandfather stole something from my grandfather, it doesn’t mean I have a grievance against you. You don’t owe me a thing. I have a choice to play the cards I’m dealt and take advantage of the opportunities this country offers, or whine about past injustices. As does everyone. Putting up a flag to celebrate that fact is not being “tone deaf” or whatever else you would call it. It’s being grateful.

The news was saying that residents fled in any direction to Merritt and Lilooett which is just down the road from Lytton. Lilooett…Pemberton and Whislter are now in danger. Hell the whole Province is in danger.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/wildfires-july-1-2021-1.6087483

BC lifted the state of emergency for COVID and no doubt will be activating one for what is coming. My sister called me and asked if I had an emergency pack ready…prior to the news of Lytton. I scoffed at first, but then corrected from illogical (never happen on the island the rain capital) I suspect the bush as we call it will be shut down in the next while. There is a campfire ban Province wide…but hard to monitor those who have no sense of personal…civic duty. When I was a kid I remember the fires out by Sproat Lake (on your way to Tofino/West Coast). If you look up at the tops of the mountains lining the long lake you can see the grey trees. The community felt threatened and band together and worked side by side to fight the fires. The lake was home to two water bombers at the time (one remains). A community came together and common understanding and bond remained.

Victoria has lined its airid hillsides with mini houses pact together 10 feet apart with lots of trees nearby.

Garth, I feel for you and this is to show what poor education , lack of manners , does to a society. Unfortunately, the western societies will slowly but surelly go down the drain as the great leaders have worked hard to destroy any values. We have now millions of sheeps that are ruled by a Twit or a Facebook post instead of thinking from multiple angles, be emphatic and build and not destroy. Minorities have more power than majority now. They are willing to use force and illegal methods to promote their agenda. Fascism is implemented under a social agenda (socialism is good right) and most they don’t want to see it or act against this. Losing hope by the day and the biggest problem is that I can’t see were to move, as this i happening everywhere. When I was young I worked four jobs, and 16 hours per day to build my house, get a car and sustain my family. Today everybody is entitled and waiting to get as much for free as they can.

What flavour do you like your Marxism? Red, orange, green or blue?

To those who are still asleep and don’t realize what is happening: the people who hate us are at war with us and will tear down everything that is dear to us and everything that is/was great about this country, if we let them.

It’s time to stop being politically correct and take a stand for what matters to you: western liberal democracy, freedom, truth, civility, law and order, a merit based society, equality of opportunity not equity of outcome.

If we don’t stand and fight for what’s right, this country will be torn apart and Balkanized and/or turned into the next communist dictatorship.

****************************

Very well said. I’m in total agreement. We continue to learn nothing from history and fall for the lies and narcissistic indulgence of weak people, pretending to be leaders. I hope it’s not too late for this great country, but with stupidity rising as it is, it may be. Once the public book burnings begin, we’ll know for sure. Don’t be blind to history people.

We are very sorry for what happened Garth. You have done more for Canada than most will ever know, and tirelessly work to help Canadians every day. Thank you for all you do.

Happy Canada Day Garth … enjoy this day as best you can, and give Dorothy and your new puppy an extra few hugs today.

Symbols matter. You stood your ground.

You are not alone, and even if only a few dare to stand with you, openly or quietly, we stand together. What happened to you only makes clearer why Canada is worth defending. The slinking, anonymous low-lifes that attacked the Flag, and your flag, will face the consequences in the world they claim to be creating, and they have no understanding of what they wish for.

You can’t win against a mob in the night. You just need to hold the mental fortress that they cannot touch: do not let the dark side and its creatures change your outlook in life. You would lose the extraordinary power that is given to each of us, to rise above animal instincts by using our brains to build things and institutions that last beyond our lifetime, simply for the good of others. In this, Canada is a pinnacle of achievement compared to most other countries, and you have proven your belief in it with your service. That is a source of admiration and unshakable gratitude from some of your fellow Canadians.

This is just one defeat – wiser and more determined, you will continue to stand. You do not stand alone.

There is a very good chance that the people who want to basically cancel the country, still expect that the country will exist to be able to levy taxes and give them an unending bounty of free government programs.

Who would sacrifice for the country now? What would you be sacrificing for?

I was born in the NWT in a hospital with 4 beds run by the Grey Nuns of Montreal. At the time of my birth there was a nun who lived in a room off to the side, mostly retired, she was in her 90’s.

She started giving of herself in the service of natives in the north around the turn of the last century, and kept at it for 70+ years, never going home to Quebec.

These women were drawn to the fact that they made a real difference. It was not uncommon for native women to give birth in a tent at -30C and not live through it, or have the baby live through it.

Who on earth would give 70 years of their life in the service of others now?

We are in the middle of a revolution, and it won’t end well.

People who see what’s happening will take appropriate precautions. It’s a big world out there, no need to rely on Canada alone as a place to live, work, invest…

To those who ask me how I would know if it were truly a time of no going back…I tell them to look at people like these protesters and imagine (not hard) that they refuse to pay taxes and the woke government decides to let them get away with it, while sticking the bill to others. At some point, if the lawless become too large, and the law can’t be enforced, the bond market starts wondering how the $2T in debt gets repaid.

Currency collapse, and interest rates go through he roof!

Most people don’t understand that in order to enforce the law, including tax laws, it takes the vast majority of the population to consider it a civic duty because they want to live in a peaceful and functional society. They recognize this sacrifice is worth it.

What if a significant number of people didn’t? What if they didn’t recognize the lawful authority of the crown? What if they thought Canada was an illegitimate country?

Is it that hard to imagine?

This is atrocious! I know too as well how much and wonderful memory this beautiful flag was for you. In a tiny beautiful place like Lunenberg N.S. too if I am not mistaken. The politicians are using Canada Day , I feel , this year to use the indigenous peoples’ plight to cancel all festivities relating to fireworks etc. to avoid large gatherings and a surge in pandemic cases. Everyone is falling for it. Next year when we are free and clear and the names of unmarked graves are still with held and many First Nation communities will still be without drinking water in a country which has 20% of the world’s freshwater we will celebrate Canada Day with a celebration fit for a king. These atrocities will be put aside. If we want to reflect on this dark part of our history let us choose another day and make it a national day of First Nations. Fix their water. Repeal the Indian Act. Reflection is good but let’s fix it and stop blinking apologizing. We cannot celebrate anything anymore. We are all getting vaccinated but we are treated like rats. The crowd for the Habs’ home game is still 3500 but you can have thousands of people outside on the streets lighting firecrackers and upending police vehicles. I am so over this already! Open the border. Do something Canada! We love you but stop treating us like infantiles!
Happy Canada Day!

Garth,

Please consider erecting a flag pole above the building and put the flag back better than ever, out of the reach of these easily influenced, soft-headed, none-too-smart, “revolutionaries”. If you cave, they only get their way and become emboldened.

I hope every single person of a moderate or conservative mindset sees what is coming here. With each passing year the ‘progressives’ get more and more deranged until things as innocuous as a flag become offensive to them. There is no reasoning, there is no rationality, only emotion. The kinds of people who think this way will not respond to sound arguments, they will just shift the goalposts or pretend they don’t understand you. The only response is strength and a separate vision. Appropriating their language, operating in their frame, caving bit by bit to them will only lead to disaster. Erin O’Toole, take note.

In my own talks with fellow right-of-centre people, I find the younger are a bit more despondent in their outlook because they are more exposed to this sort thing from their former comrades and school mates as the mind rot spreads. We see this and dread the future. Those of you here north of 60 who have achieved the kind of success we seek, no offense intended, I believe are more detached and less aware or concerned of what the future holds, yet still feel shock with each passing outrage. My parents certainly fit this mold and all I can do is scratch my head at the disconnect.

Condolences, Garth. I know the attachment some of us place on inanimate objects, it may be just fabric, but it represented something personal to you. I hope you get it back.

Happy Canada/Dominion Day none the less.

Cheers.

I don’t have any words honestly. I have rarely been left speechless in my 40 years on this earth. Garth, you have my vote for leader of the conservative party. Please get this country back on track.

#251 Luddite on 07.01.21 at 4:56 pm

What a crock of #[email protected]#, Garth, what have we come to in this country?

My grandparents immigrated in the early 1900’s to the BC coast, to make a new life of open opportunity. They purchased their land with after tax dollars and worked hard to employ others, raise a family and make a living in a great country.

The war against Japan in 1942 made my grandparents and my mother and father an enemy that never was, they lost everything and only pleaded for the return of tools from their farms.

My parents relocated to Kamloops after their internment was completed, back to start working again to help their parents who came to this country, give their children a roof over their head, good free education and continue to work hard and give back to the community.

It was during your tenure that Brian took to the stage to give an apology and reparation, my father said most of the people who were deserving of such were already dead.

The people who organized the rallies were never violent, did not vandalize and were as they are; peaceful Canadians using only facts and information.

It absolutely blows my mind seeing what is transpiring today, yes, we have done wrongs but with that, I still stand proud, wear a Canada shirt and hoist a flag for my family and tell them what sacrifice their great grand parents made for us all to be on the dirt of this great country.

Thanks for all you do, each and everyday, a wonderful small read of sanity in an insane world.

Light ’em up, bub!

“I just got off the phone with “the idiots” from Global. They claim they said no such thing. To verify, I also watched yesterday’s Global 6 p.m. news.”

+++

I’m thinking he’ll be gone before the end of the year and permanently replaced by Sophie and Neetu.

________________________________________________________

I reached out to Chris Gailus on social media. He claims no such report crossed his desk yesterday. (I’m not sure I can trust him since he was once accused of sexual harassment., right?)

I also spoke to someone I know and trust in the business who watches everything on Global News, including the 6 pm news last night. They said there was no mention of any such evacuation in Lillooet on the news last night.

I agree with Garth 100%, to have the RIGHT to display one’s loyalty to this great country, which as he said is a Jewel in the world, where all immigrants love to flock to. Yes, Canada has its own mistakes too. NO one is perfect and no country is either. With all her faults Canada is still a far better country than many out there.

But, Garth, knowing the row nerve it would touch, at this particular juncture, so close to a painful black mark, should have used wisdom, and not displayed the flag, this one 1st July. It wouldn’t have made him any less patriotic.

Garth you said it best “This is a jewel of a Country” so respect… and that you wave her flag,,, again respect…
But,,,
we’ve done some wrongs too, where we were an ugly people too… I pinched this below from another forum…

“BOW YOUR HEADS IN SADNESS, NOT SHAME”
WE ARE BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND. NOW WE FINALLY SEE YOU…….. thanks to voices like yours, Tom.
Written by Tom Frazer.
So a friend of mine asked if we should celebrate Canada Day. I think I answered her. But this is just my opinion.
So, I’m gonna qualify this by saying I am Mohawk of the Six Nations.
Bow your head in sadness, not shame. You didn’t write the laws that made these places. You didn’t run the churches that made these decisions. Your (mine too) government did. Old dead prime ministers did. Old dead popes, priests preachers and nuns did.
The country we live in was founded in exploitation, murder, genocide and thievery. But EVERY country in the world is. You didn’t know about these children because the government didn’t want you to know. I’m a conservative minded person, but thank god for liberals.
Now you know about them. You know about us. You are beginning to understand what we have gone and are going through.
So stand up. Celebrate Canada Day if you want. But celebrate it because we have been found. Celebrate it because our children are being recovered. Celebrate it because you don’t want this country to repeat what they have done.
We have been hear since Mother Earth bore the first brothers and sisters. We will be here when Grandfather (Moon) puts Mother Earth to sleep. We have always been here. But now you finally see us.

Well.
About a decade or so ago I looked after a building that had a small Dept of Indian affairs office in it that granted money to different Indian Bands for business start ups.

One day the Director( a thirty something native kid, real smart, very savvy) of the office came to me and asked us to order new signage for the Door and the Lobby.
Dept of Indian affairs to be changed to
Dept of Aboriginal Affairs……seems one band from northern BC was outraged at the “Indian” designation.

Several months went by and another request.
Change the door and lobby signs to
Dept of 1st Nations Affairs….
Another band , another outrage.
All Letterhead, business cards, emails, etc had to change as well.

A few months after that I ran into the Director.
he said, ” You know one of the last bands wanted us to change back to Indian Affairs because Canada Post kept returning all the mail!”………

Endless, pointless, bickering, that ultimately, the taxpayers fund.

I fear the push far left in all aspects of society will continue, and I don’t see many adults taking a stand. The formula at play works – guilt is a means to power, to shame is to control, virtue means no criticism, and those accused of sins have their voice taken (ask the Church how long this formula let them stay in power).

Problem is that we’d have to build a ton of them as they would easily become overcrowded.

Please keep the dialogue peaceful and constructive, the goal is to move forward… not back.

First, there a lots of drugged-out alcholic people in Vancouver and probably most of them are white. But does it really matter what their backgrounds are? Anyone can succumb to drug and alcohol addiction, and anyone can get out of the cycle of addiction if they have the will and the support to change. Try supporting those who want to change if you want to be part of the solution.

Second, don’t stigmatize any one group of people for what a minority of vandals do to someone else’s property. We don’t even know who was responsible for these actions, but I doubt they’d be supported by the leaders of the communities, who’ve worked a hard fight to empower their people and provide them with the support, tools and encouragement they need to survive, grow and thrive. Also, open your eyes. There are many beautiful and thriving reserves populated by talented and productive individuals, professionals, academics and business people. So please keep the dialogue honest, respectful and productive.

#308 Happy Canada Day on 07.01.21 at 6:50 pm

I take this personally. My family and I came to Canada after all those schools were gone. We (or even my ancestors) had nothing to do with the bad things of that past. We are a minority here, arrived poor. We never lacked the chance to grow. We have always given more than we take to this great nation that welcomed us. We have freedom and happiness.

Desecrating the Canadian flag means shitting all over the countless immigrants like me and my family that are now proud Canadians.

I won’t be reconciled with those that burn the Flag that means my freedom and happiness. I won’t be reconciled with those that want me not to celebrate this nation. I won’t be reconciled with those that want canadian families like mine to PAY for sins we had nothing to do with.

I do wonder if the people resorting to these criminal acts realize they are harming their “cause”. Maybe they do.

Happy Canada Day!!!!!

My birth place is Australia and we always honored our flag and country no matter what. Totally shameful what the thieves did to your flag. Sad to say Canada is becoming a commie nation.. The Feds just passed a bill that affects your “Freedom of Speech”, but not disgracing the country’s flag. To barney! Celebrate Canada Day, it is part of your heritage and be proud of it! There will always be idiots … no matter where you live ….

Enjoy the day…

#310 Steel City Kid on 07.01.21 at 6:55 pm

Very saddened to read this, Garth. I had a bad feeling that something like this would happen. Stealing that flag was a childish, petty act that only makes people feel more divided and embattled. I am sympathetic to those who do not want to celebrate this year, but they had no right to damage and vandalize your property – I hope they are caught. For many reasons, a sad Canada Day.

#312 Idiocy on 07.01.21 at 7:04 pm

I find it almost unbelieveable that the town would have the temerity to ask you to remove the national flag on Canada Day.

Is the RCMP going to trace the threatening emails to Mr. Turner ?
Or just turn their heads like they did with the rail line blockages, desecrated statues and now burned churches ?

Canadians better start demanding some action / answers on these matters ,including who is giving the ‘stand down’ orders to not pursue nor prosecute and why.

If not, prepare to be governed by the ‘woke’ mob.

#313 WTF on 07.01.21 at 7:09 pm

Sent To Mayor Risser of Lunenburg:

Dear Sir,

The vast majority of Canadians are reasonable, the average citizen would prefer to wait until the facts are known before leaping headfirst into appeasement for an issue that may or may not be nefarious in nature and has no bearing on most Canadians who 1: weren’t alive , 2: didn’t live here.3: Had 0 to do with Residential School implementation. If it turns out this was mass murder (very unlikely) then I would be looking to the elected officials responsible for First Nations, not a self righteous town council who seems to be good at issuing edicts. “Council suggests that July 1st be a day of solidarity and reflection” .

No Idea what that is supposed to mean, Are most Canadians racist? I don’t think so. Here in Vancouver the most ethnically diverse city on the planet everyone gets along pretty well. Not perfect but generally works. Is your “suggestion” about racism in general or First Nations, or the unfolding unmarked graves issue? If the latter what about the former? If the former shouldn’t we be doing that each and every day ? Reflect what? We don’t know the facts. YET! Canada has problems, historical or otherwise. Ask an immigrant what they think of Canada and I’m sure you might find they think this is a pretty great place to be!

In your town there was an act of vandalism and a Canadian Flag was stolen/destroyed from a downtown Lunenburg business and threats were made against a former Parliamentarian and custodian of the flag who dares to show his pride of country. I hope your entire council do some “reflecting” on law and order and peaceful protest VS the criminal act performed last night. And show “solidarity” for a resident and business owner who actually pays taxes. As opposed to bandits in the night with a political agenda who probably don’t. Had council shown the courage to support this taxpayer perhaps things would have turned out differently? No Idea, but fanning the flames of woke intolerance didn’t seem to work too well for Lunenburg.

The majority see your actions for what they are, politicians and pandering for more votes under the guise of caring. Or perhaps it comes from the heart? I have no idea but I am sure of one thing. Your “suggestion” is feckless.

#314 Danger Dan on 07.01.21 at 7:11 pm

Garth, I came to wish you a happy Canada Day celebration and am sorry that it has been overshadowed by this disheartening turn of events.

The three Native guys that work for me roll their eyes at all this pc crap but they aren’t stupid.

The guys that work for me take full advantage of everything the govt offers them or the band offers as per my suggestions and comments.
They also like the fact that our company pays …every week.

I worked with a guy for 10+ years who’s married to a Yukon Native and she knows ALL the ins and outs of govt grants.
She spent years in the residential school system.
Harsh but fair discipline and she and ALL her brothers and sisters did very very well for themselves.

Her kids ( now adults) have taken full advantage of their 1/2 native status. Financially, educationally and medically.
An interesting aside.

When her white husband and kids visited the Yukon band they were asked to clean the family graves as one clan( Wolf) cant touch another clans’ (Bear) gravesites.

He and his sons would spend a few days cleaning, weeding, painting , etc in the band graveyard because ….no one else was allowed to do it ….by tradition.

It might explain some of the 100 year old “lost” and forgotten graveyards all across Canada.

Dear Garth,
We are very sorry to hear that this happened to you. We are very sad and upset inside. I can’t imagine the upset that this has caused. I thought that flag was beautiful and had even more meaning with it’s place in your life. No one ever can or will be able to justify stealing from someone as a way to make a point. They are bullies and criminals and I hope justice will prevail. I hope your flag is found and I hope you haven’t lost faith in people.

#317 Winterpeg on 07.01.21 at 7:17 pm

The timing was not great to celebrate Canada day in the traditional way this year.
Would a poster or statement acknowledging the recent developments in the news re: residential schools- placed on the front door of your office these last few days beside the flag – have prevented this act of vandalism /theft? Hard to say.
I hope the flag will be found and returned. In a small town, likely the word will get around as to who the perps were. Someone will be bragging about it and give themselves away.
In the mean time, good luck with your fireworks this evening. Happy Canada Day.

#323 Mrs Hubris on 07.01.21 at 7:23 pm

Very sorry you have experienced this, Garth. I recently listened to four keynote speeches at a national higher education conference in Canada. Each speaker in turn, belonged to an identity category (not categories made by me) not of European extraction. Each speaker was angry and it was clearly stated, that I (and mine), as a settler, imperialist and colonizer, was the cause. Somewhat ironically, I experienced this all as hatred for my kind and did not take part in the ensuing debate, as no real debate was possible in a forum where I was simply wrong. I have seen the activists, seen the teaching, and have to read the emails daily. I am thus not surprised at what happened in Lunenburg yesterday. Just sorry this is where Canada is going. This situation reflects education policy at every level now. Thank you Garth for trying to stand up for different perspectives which are fast being silenced.

#324 Andrew on 07.01.21 at 7:28 pm

I’m glad I was prompted to reflect this Canada Day since it made me realize I don’t actually own a Canadian Flag. Fixed that right away – bought one for the car and one to hang in my apartment window when I get home from celebrating with my family.
Thanks for all you do, Garth – and Happy Canada Day to all the blog dogs out there!

#329 Leichendiener on 07.01.21 at 7:44 pm

Upon reflection, it would appear that the Liberal election machine has co-opted the indigenous incredulousness over finding many abandoned cemeteries. It’s now morphed into critical race theory and how patriotism is bad. However, the Liberal charge will be overtaken by more banal concerns of the electorate over inflation and the cost of energy, notable the cost of gasoline and home heating fuel. Hopefully, the white SJWs of Lunenburg don’t over step their righteousness and burn or deface churches.

That road rage story was awful. Please take care but you did the right thing by not engaging. But good on you to think of pointing to the dash cam. Those types are so desperately in need of power that they won’t stop raging unless they know they’re going to be held accountable for their actions.

I had a similar one the other day. It was my turn to go at a 4-way stop but I signalled to an old lady who had arrived at the intersection at about the same time as me to cross first. Just as she started walking through the intersection the Jacka$$ facing me on the opposite side (whose car was incidentally the last to arrive at the intersection) decided to plough on through before everyone else and almost mowed down the old lady. Some people just don’t have an ounce of decency or class, it’s disgusting.

Garth so sorry to read of your flag being ripped down and stolen. How obnoxious! Today is the saddest Canada Day I’ve ever experienced in my 68 years in the country.

First poor Lytton residents having suffered through such heat this week, now they’ve all lost their homes. Our town normally has a wonderful celebration but for the second year has been cancelled because of the virus. Then to read of your loss. In the last hour I’ve heard that the “orange shirts” have torn down Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth statues.

I agree with your posts the last few days and the notice you put in the bank window. Yes we have much to be sorry for in our country’s past but we are certainly glad to be living here and not in the US where the last year has been most unsettling.

Happy Canada Day to you despite your loss hopefully you are still celebrating somehow.

Hello Garth, thank you for your tireless endeavor to educate Canadians for free all the time -everyday of the year, I have been reading your blogs for over 10 years, as an immigrant to Canada I love to celebrate Canada day, as a means of thank you Canada for what it gave me and my family, peace, prosperity and justice which I was not able to find in the old country. Sad to see of the vandals that happened on your flag (our flag) here we are instead of talking of all the atrocities that happen in residential schools, we are talking of all the criminal acts that have happened in the last couple weeks, for me these are criminal elements that are hijacking what we should really talk and remember about. Viva Canada-not perfect but one of the best jewels we have in this world

Hi Garth,
It’s a sad day, and this makes me even more sad. Not much of a Canada Day holiday today… but I still love this great land. Happy Canada day regardless… and thank you Garth for always keeping us proud to be Canadians.

#339 Geppetto on 07.01.21 at 7:58 pm

These are pathetic sanctimonious people, Garth, and I’m sorry to know this happened. Small tidbit: I was a member of the Canadian Grenadier Guards in 1992, and paraded under that very flag for the daily changing of the guard ceremonies on the Hill throughout that summer of 1992, and also had the honour of marching when the Queen presented our regiment with our updated colours at the GG’s residence. Therefore, you have all my solidarity.

However, how did you not anticipate that such a thing would happen? I’m not at all surprised that it did, and, in your position, this would have been one year that I would not have flown the flag. Some people would be taken aback by such a suggestion, because they think it’s a kind of surrender, but I don’t see it that way. I served my country for many years, and I’m sure you wouldn’t mistake someone of my profile with one of the woke mob, and, anyway, didn’t you say that you only started to drape the flag on your building only four or five years ago? My question is, why at this particular junction in time, and not every year since you recieved it at the end of 1992? In this ongoing culture war, I fear we’re all starting to look a bit like the bombastic people down south. But, I digress, and wish you the best this Canada Day and all the ones to come, and I hope you can retrieve the flag.

#346 Father's Daughter on 07.01.21 at 8:51 pm

I’ve always liked Canada’s Day, and Thanksgiving. Non-religious, no gifts required, and a time to reflect on how good that we have it (we can complain all of the other days, nothing is perfect). Really sad to hear about this. I’ve always been proud of our country. People who aren’t lack perspective. Thankfully, a Canadian passport is a valuable thing so maybe they should seek out greener pastures. Maybe a paradise that has no regrets, guilt, or shame for wrongdoings of their past. An uninhabited island maybe, not sure who else would qualify.

My husband, who has immigrated here and has a whole different perspective, is also very proud and thankful for what the country has given him and his family. In fact he makes our family (and visiting guests, beware) state what we are thankful for, every day, at dinnertime. It’s not really hard to come up with answers. Not sure what else to say except that this is really sad. Cancel Canada? Wow..Please let it be different next year.
For the record, I do support reconciliation and ongoing efforts to improve relations and conditions for First Nations people in the country. This does not mean cancelling Canada’s Day.

I hear you. What I failed to summarize in my original thoughts was these days people seem all too willing to go to 7 out of 10 right off the hop.

Like why, in the midst of his rant, did my thoughts go to where is the bear spray? I’m not violent, I’m not like that. (any more)

But sometime, somewhere these folks going nuts will start at 7 but find themselves going at a person who knows 11.

If I was Garth I’d follow Flop’s suggestion and bath the building in a projected flag nightly. I’d find a historical appraiser who would be willing to apply felony value to that flag and I’d be getting my IT guys to mine all the header and meta data from those emails. Then I’d be on the police and if they react too slowly I’d hire me a private eye, find them and simply make their lives miserable. Name and shame. Just dog walk them for the rest of the summer.

A PR firm could also help…destruction of Canadian historical artifacts, trespass, veiled email threats…economic damage to a business…

You know, 11.

#352 Sail Away on 07.01.21 at 9:05 pm

How to frame this? Not completely sure… let’s try:

First Nations were the first Canadians. They were here when the country began and their ancestry is indivisibly tied to the country. Nobody in this country has more historical precedent than the First Nations.

For the many Canadians who state that the First Nations issues have nothing to do with them since their own families arrived later…

Yes, it is true the Canada/FN issues may pre-date you personally. However, because they (the issues) do pre-date you, this means these issues carry greater weight than your more recent situation. Meaning, a solution to unresolved historical friction is more important than you are. Responsibility as a citizen means recognizing that and either quietly not complaining about the process or actively working to resolve it.

Being a destructive a-hole on either side hinders resolution.

#353 Elon Fanboy on 07.01.21 at 9:06 pm

Dang, that really sucks Garth, sorry. That was a very special flag.

We’re reaching critical mass with the rampant SJW cancel culture. Normal rational folks are beginning to get seriously pissed off as it’s starting to inject itself into their personal and business lives.

‘White Privilege’ is a core tenant of Critical Race Theory, the current darling of the woke HR departments across North America, causing chaos in businesses and Education.

You can’t escape White Privilege by the way, it’s like Original Sin, you’re just meant to be in perpetual atonement.

It’s amazing how fast CRT has taken hold considering it’s basically anti white racism.

I guess the masses have been scared into silence for fear of being cancelled, e.g. being locked out of social media, or way worse, losing their jobs.

#207 Proud Descendent of Settlers

I know you’re not likely to read this PDoS, but…

Say your great great grandfather murdered a man and stole a valuable painting of his. Before death he handed it down to his son.

Your great grandfather modified the stolen painting somehow and kept it in the family. Before his death, he handed it down to his son.

Your grandfather in his older age discovers the huge value of the painting. He spent a big amount of his earning to put an amazing expensive frame around it. Frame was so fancy it was 4 years of his salary. Worth it because he learned the painting was highly valuable. Before death he handed it down to your father.

Your father paid 2 years of salary to have the painting restored professionally. Before death handed it down to you.

Now, it comes to light beyond any doubt how this painting was acquired by your family. Clearly you are NOT responsible for the murder. That was on your great great grandfather. However, what should happen to the stolen painting? Do you think you should get to keep it? Or should it be returned to the rightful owner?

I know it has a huge sentimental value to you. I know your family spent a lot of family money on it all these years. I know you really really don’t want to give it back. But do you really have rightful claim to it? Any claim to it at all?

I think that is a fair starting point for this unfortunate reality check we’re facing right now as Canadians.

I once thought fascism could only be a product of the far right. But I was much younger then.

I have before me my father’s medals from his six years of service throughout the second world war.

What was it all for? Nothing, apparently.

Sad…You had an opinion. They had an opinion.

They didn’t respect yours. Nor your property.

Lack of mutual respect for others is just as common in 2021 as it was when those who didn’t respect another’s culture and way of life , then killed them. Ironic that they killed your flag in the same way and likely do not have a clue they are just as guilty or wrong.

I guess some things never change.

If we did respect others differences and allowed them to do and think what they liked as long as it didn’t hurt anyone else, we’d live in a better world.

Never going to change, we re doomed to extinction by our own egos, greed and arrogance. As simple as that.

Garth I’m a 43yo GenXer who’s followed you since my days in university as a business student and have kept up with the blog since then. Your voice of reason in an otherwise mad world has been a tonic.

Through all the various events, themes and happenings over that time (including the madness of the real estate market and even the pandemic) I have been invariably content to read the thoughts and opinions of yourself and of course of the steerage and have had only an occasional desire to put in my 2 cents. This was the tipping point. As a former politician who served his country, as a proud Canadian and as a gracious, generous person in general (as anyone would have to be to dedicate their time and energy to this blog) this is no less of an assault on you and your freedoms than a physical assault. As other posters have noted, while I was sympathetic to this cause initially, these actions by a few have completely turned me off. Burning churches, trashing flags, renaming our nation’s birthday Genocide Day? I’ve had enough.

I have 2 elementary school aged kids here at home. I tell them how lucky they are to live here as often as possible. I fear for the Canada that they will grow up in. I fear that they will be robbed of the opportunity to be as proud of it as I am or as you are. What a shame.

Everyone here is saying we need stronger leadership to turn this around but will that not just galvanize these SJW’s and strengthen their resolve? At least as I write this I am hearing the fireworks begin in my neighborhood so I know all is not lost, yet. Happy Canada Day.

Sucks, but not the first time anyone’s been targeted for taking a stand.

Try a more B&D approach Garth; some shoes on sidewalk, orange banners, smudge ceremony with the band, maybe lower the flag to street level, that sort of thing…

Happy Canada Day!

I take it your talking about how “land” was stolen and we need to give it back. I would gladly go “back home” if i could except i was born here, my parents were born here. We are 5th generation Canadians. Where am i supposed to go? maybe i can trace ancestors back to the Ukraine, maybe Russia, except all that land was also stolen from someone before them. do we all head back to Africa? its not so simple as giving back the painting.

This stolen land argument is getting tiring. Canada is more than a bunch of empty land. It the railway, the ability to grow food, raise livestock, a health care system, education system, roads, highways, power networks. If we want to move on we need the Indigenous to participate in society, help us succeed together, not demand all the land back.

Unfortunately feeding 38 million people is not possible through a hunter gatherer system. We have so much potential as a nation, lets use it.

Your great grandfather modified the stolen painting somehow and kept it in the family. Before his death, he handed it down to his son.
===

Your example is bad. Our flag is not a stolen painting. It is an expression of our unity as a country. You are free not to feel that unity and not to express it. You can’t tell others what they must feel and how they can or cannot express their feelings.

Say your great great grandfather murdered a man, and because of that you cannot celebrate your own birthday until you find all distant relatives of that man and apologise to them. Are you going to accept that?

#377 Bloodthirsty Settler on 07.01.21 at 10:34 pm

Sometimes, if you want to understand what’s happening in the world, you shouldn’t apply moral criteria, because moral criteria are never absolute. They become meaningless and invalid as soon as you cross the border of the culture that produced them. Instead, you must look at the conflict as if you were an extraterrestrial with no personal stake in the outcome. Or, if sci-fi metaphors leave you unconvinced, try to look at it the way you watch a documentary about wild life in the African Savannah. The lions are trying to eat the antelopes; the antelopes are doing their best not to get eaten. You are watching it with a detached amusement; If the filming is good and you don’t flip the channel too soon, your cynical attitude may help you understand the dynamics of daily life in the Savannah.
By the way, if I were an antelope, I would be wondering why the lions, instead of hunting us relentlessly, don’t graze peacefully together with our entire herd. We never claimed any exclusive rights on the grass; we welcome everyone to join us. I feel inspired by the vision of lions peacefully munching the grass alongside the antelopes, enjoying the advantages of the herbivorous way of life, and teaching their young not to kill but to be extremely kind to every living creature in the universe.
The beauty of the antelopes’ way of life must be plainly obvious to anyone with an ounce of brain: you don’t have to exert yourself chasing your prey; you don’t have to choose between dying of hunger and committing murder; and you don’t have to suffer from terrible guilt recalling all the innocent lives you have taken. And all you need to do to enjoy it is join the antelopes and all the grass in the world will be at your feet.
I have to add that if I were an antelope, I would most probably be a dead one, because I would be irresistibly tempted to enlighten the lions by presenting my perfectly logical arguments to them. Since antelopes, as all herbivores, are not really famous for their superb intellect, I would be most likely remembered as a hero rather than a fool, and my example would inspire other well-intended idiots to follow in my hoofsteps.
If Barack Obama were an antelope, he would capture a couple of lion prides and waste the rest of his term as an antelope unsuccessfully trying to convince the captured lions to look happy while he stuffs grass down their throats. Seeing that it doesn’t work, he would try to improve the situation be feeding them, first, Israeli grass and then Israeli people. As you should know by now, that wouldn’t work either, and the captive lions, deprived of their usual quarry, would try to tear each other apart at the every opportunity.
Here’s a simple fact beyond the grasp of an antelope: Even the kindest, gentlest lion in the world is no more capable of living the life of an herbivore than even the cruelest, most vicious antelope in all of Africa is capable of hunting down another animal, crushing its windpipe, and devouring it while it is still struggling.
Unfortunately, we are the antelopes rather than the lions in that analogy. We don’t want to kill anyone. All we want is to be left alone. We wholeheartedly welcome anyone to graze on our grass, and when lions come in overwhelming numbers and mix with the herd, we suppress our healthy instincts with the politically-correct, but absolutely baseless assertions that most of those lions have come here not to crush our windpipes and devour us while our hearts are still beating, but merely in search for greener grass, for which our pastures are so deservedly famous all over the world.
Dreams, with the exception of wet ones, are not a product of biology. They are shaped by purely societal stimuli. They are culture-dependent. They are the byproducts of civilizations, and different civilizations induce drastically different dreams. While antelopes are dreaming of grass, lions are dreaming of antelopes.

Folks need to understand we are at an inflection point in history. This is not a Canada thing, but a problem across the western world. We are soon gong to have a choice. We can fight it or be run over by it. There is no middle ground. So when your kids come home with the latest propaganda and indoctrination they are being exposed to fight it with everything you have. There are not 74 genders there are 2, boys and girls are different (duh), equality of outcome is toxic, chemical castration (sex change) of children is wrong, we have a proud heritage with flaws, communism is evil, and skin color is irrelevant. The only good thing that has come out of the lockdown was parents learning the garbage their kids were being taught. Stay engaged with your kids, and make sure they understand the evil we are confronting.

#379 Richard Sowery on 07.01.21 at 10:36 pm

So sad to hear of this happening. So sad to hear of this happening to you, as someone who has given so much to Canada through your public service.

For those with a call to action Canada Day and the flag is not the issue here. Sadly this is an example of how intellectually lazy woke culture often is. Tearing down a flag and expressing your outrage on facebook/twitter etc accomplishes nothing.

I continue to be surprised that little media attention has been paid to the few (if any) changes that have been implemented after the 94 calls to action of the TRC. I continue to be surprised that our national horror regarding the atrocities of the residential schools does not make us reflect on a PM that shuffled Jody Wilson-Raybould from Attorney General to Veterans Affairs for her appropriately trying to speak ‘truth to power’ and subsequently expelling her from caucus after she refused to bend to the will of the PMO. How are we as a country OK with a PM who treats a strong Indigenous woman this way?

And now Carolyn Bennett, current Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations at best treats JWR with disdain, and at worst treats her with racism and misogyny – and PM does not seem to care?

Why at this time can we as Canadians not see what is right in front of us?

If we collectively really care about any of this egregious history then a flag is not the issue here. The real issue is that somehow everytime our PM says he is sorry, we as a country seem to believe him.

===

Destructive a-holes are only present on one side. May be we need to get a few on our side. Then the other side will have to reign in their a-holes.

I have no quarrel with FN people, and don’t mind them getting some preferential treatment, within reason. If an actual FN person politely tells me that something I wear on my shirt or display on my house offends them, I will be very likely to oblige and take it down.

Most of SJW thugs are not FN. They join the cause only to engage in vandalism with impunity. That gives them the sense of power, and the sense of purpose for their otherwise mediocre lives.

And if anyone thinks that we, recent immigrants, are less important .. squeaky wheel will get the grease, just watch us.

I left my home to come here seeking a better life. I was a kid leaving a communist country.

In High School grade 9 when they gave me the History textbook and I saw that it had just over 100 years of history I laughed.

I’m older now. I see that this land was perhaps built on a shaky foundation. I am starting to understand why Canadian history book was just over 100 years. “Winners” always write history books.

The claims and fight will be on now for who “own it”. Perhaps the answer is to break off from the monarchy that really has no claim on it, and turn this into a proper Republic that will be an example to the world? I don’t know, but I don’t see how the attack on the “heroes” of Canada ends at just the heroes, and not their institutions and “their country”.

#385 CRJK on 07.01.21 at 11:19 pm

Nothing can be done by use of democratic mechanisms. We, old fashioned Canadians, are now minority. Canada has passed the point of no return. Every year this insanity of Bolshevism will grow and will take more space. We already lost the right of speech. They will rename streets and ruin monuments. Canada, as it was known in the past, is lost. USA too, but there is chance over there. In the USA they have powerful military that may take power in the critical situation. I don’t mind if some Indians make noise. They’ve got good reason to not be happy. We are born into far more than we know and the circumstances of being born into a reserve are… lets look at some numbers.

– Canada is the 6th most developed nation in the world. FN’s stack up in 63rd, lower than Russia and Libya.

– 60% of FN’s live off reserve. The rest (360,000 as of 2015) live on the reserve. There are approx 2300 reserves.

– 6 out of 10 are high school dropouts on reserves. Off reserves, its 3 out of 10. The national average is 1 in 10. In some reserves, you may not find a graduate. 50% of FN children live in poverty compared to 13% for the rest of Canada. More info in a short video below that doesn’t begin to touch on the social number, but readers get the point:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWK6ChJw8hs

We are born into far more than we know. Yes, we should be thanking our lucky stars when we are born on the right side of the tracks. It’s called gratitude and there’s nothing at all wrong with that, but we have to know not everyone is taking part in this Canadian dream, be mindful and have some compassion.

Reserves in my mind were an ill conceived and temporary fix to a many sided stereotypical problem that has gone unattended by our federal government as successive politicians over the generations, having no easy answer and a short shelf life to a long term problem, hide for cover. The result is reserves living quite literally at the end of a bridge to nowhere, with next to no economic opportunity and a government with little incentive to invest in a loser scenario.

Unmarked graves are a crime scene, some jaw boners might say? Drive by some reserves in Northern Sask and Manitoba, now that’s a crime scene. Plywood for window is the new fashion for all to many homes on the reservation.

FN’s are behind. It’s not a racist statement, its fact. We listen to FN spokes people talk about greater self government and taking back the land as though they are ready for it. They aren’t. That’s the cold hard truth.

Back in the 1800’s, Sask privatized a great deal of crown land into farm land as immigrants came from overseas and “settled”. We could do the same thing today with FN’s. Give each family some land thanks to climate change, push the treeline farther north, with clauses that keep them from selling it so Indians don’t cash in on it and blow the dowry. It could work right, sounds like a great idea doesn’t it? When we look at the percentage of crown land that is federally owned in the provinces (96% in BC as an example), the crown can spare it!

The problem with this idea as most would come to realize, is that FN’s themselves aren’t ready for it. Like all other assets, we have to look after them, assets don’t look after themselves. Way too many FN’s are struggling in a losing battle just to look after themselves. It’s not a question of whether or not they are worthy. Everyone is worthy, doesn’t matter who you are. It was never about worth, anyone who thought otherwise believed in a myth. Its always been about whether or not we are ready. Sorry if this offends, but the numbers don’t lie, FN’s aren’t ready. I wish it was different but at this point in time, it just isn’t.

What will it take? Resources and time. There are nations or reserves that are failed with no chance at near term prosperity, potentially long term as well… its a tough conversation and one that has to happen. Some scenarios need to end. Extinctions and endings are a part of life. Off reserve incentives need to be on the table and I’m not re-inventing the wheel, here. I’m just saying, I don’t mind if Indians make noise, I’d do the same.

#389 Genocide on 07.01.21 at 11:35 pm

Genocide is a bastardized word in Canada… What Hitler did during the 1930s and 40s was genocide. What Mao did was genocide. What Stalin did was genocide. Together these few people and their countries killed 60-100 million souls.

Residential schools in Canada, however, were a misguided attempt by the Catholic Church to “save” the souls of First Nations Peoples. It is unfortunate that it turned out the way it did, but “genocide” is not the right word for the situation.

Well, it’s only a little after 9:30 pm here in Cowtown, and I have to stay up until 11:00 pm to catch the Canada Day Fireworks. Dang, cause it’s been a very long day. Sundown comes late to this western city in the summer months, 9:54 p.m and then we need to wait a bit for the sky to get dark. They say the sky will be lit up orange and there will be a moment of silence before it begins.

Here’s a sound bite from the first Muslim Mayor elected in Canada:

“Nenshi said he had spent the last few days speaking with Calgarians of all walks of life and was able to consult a circle of Indigenous elders. Calgary’s mayor also spoke with political leadership from Treaty 7 First Nations.
“What I really heard from so many people was an incredible generosity of spirit,” Nenshi said. “By and large, (the elders) advice to us was not to move forward in division and anger, but to be able to move forward together as a nation.”

Nenshi added that the elders advised Canada Day should not be something to cancel.”

Thank you elders and everyone who expressed support.
It will mean a lot to kids and adults.
I guess we’re just a bunch of corn fed cowpokes out here in Alberta. Not very ‘progressive or marxist’. I’ll take that all day long. Maybe next year come out here to celebrate Canada Day Garth. There will be no flag stealing on our watch. Shoot first and ask questions later will be the order of the day.

I’m woken!…I mean…uh…I hear you! Thanks for getting to the point. Finally a post I can get behind.

I spent the day on a beautiful northern Saskatchewan lake admiring the Canadian flags proudly flown from cottages along the shore. Out of interest I read through the official protocols for flag display. Aside from the many technicalities and rules, the underlying message was that all Canadians show respect for the symbol that represents this great country, our flag. Garth, have comfort in knowing you are a role model and a true steward of the flag. It will be difficult coming to terms with the loss of such an important piece of history, but take solace in knowing what an important role you have, and the influence you will continue to be. Your flag may be fleeting, your patriotism is eternal. Happy Canada Day! Stay strong and free.

Vandalism is an act of callousness ultimately leading to self-destruction.

There are (always) saner ways to put your message across. Start with earning some shred of respect. Stealing the sacred flag is not one of them b’coz never ever in history have 2 wrongs ever evolved into one right.

If you have the ovaries and some grace to go with it then come forward to apologize for your insensitive action.

#413 lemmiwinks on 07.02.21 at 2:59 am

Thinking further on this, any right thinking person should be truly, deeply concerned by this. If a person cannot display the national flag of the country on their own property in the very country represented on that flag, what are the broader implications of that? Think carefully about it.

These people have now equated the Canadian flag with the Southern Battle flag and Garth with a neo nazi. They are not elected, yet they rule through fear and intimidation and your elected officials toe the line or else. They act with impunity, damaging private and public property without fear of retribution. Make no mistake, the law is no longer on your side in these matters. The rules have changed and not in your favour.

Normal people have been identified as the enemy, act accordingly because you are deep in enemy territory.

#414 lemmiwinks on 07.02.21 at 3:04 am

P.S. Garth, I will contribute $20 Australian pesos towards a new (bigger?) flag if you start a crowdfunding thing. It will never replace the sentimental value of the one which has been taken from you, but it’s the best I can think of for now.

Tough times bring out the worst in people.
Covid and it’s long lasting disproportionate financial impact has, and will continue to, expose the other face of Canada that was hidden behind an artificially created “multicultural society”.
Immigrants are an asset as long as there are more jobs than people. Give jobs to robots and suddenly immigrants become a liability.

Let’s be realistic. Government want skills and taxes when they invite immigrants. Prioritizing those people who would be least likely to depend on tax payers support.
In turn, people immigrate to have a safer, richer and cleaner life. It’s like any business transaction. As long as people are clear about that and don’t mix it with false patriotism, things will function much better.

At the end of the day, the cold hard truth is, you are what your color and ethnicity is. Let’s not kid ourselves and focus on enjoying a mutually beneficial transaction.

As a so-called “indigenous person” I am deeply offended by these flagrant acts of intimidation, vandalism and disrespect, supposedly committed in the name of “justice” for indigenous peoples. Actually my ancestors fought for Canada in both WW’s (alongside many other “indigenous peoples”, I might add) and would be appalled to see what has happened to this once great nation. In the geological time period I have been reading this blog, this has to be the saddest, most pathetic posting ever! What has this nation come to?

International organizations have rated Canada as the best place in the entire planet to live. Now I’m not too sure. When citizens try to tear down the essence of our country with their hands, are we doomed as a civilization?

Those who try to correct history by destroying the present are deluded pawns. You cannot change, or correct, what was by cancelling the current. On Canada day, I visited a neighbour from India who every Canada Day, puts on a big celebration to mark his new country. This year under a tent it was Punjabi food partnered with a local First Nation to promote togetherness and awareness. What an unlikely combination—maybe only in Canada! They were asking for a pause on celebrations for one Canada Day out of many. It’s a reasonable request in the context of the grief that many are feeling.

We don’t need to clutch our pearls at the #CancelCanadaDay sentiment – no one is talking about abolishing a federal holiday. Anyone leaping to that conclusion is missing the nuance.

Look at it from their perspective and of course it is disrespectful to celebrate our country precisely at a time when so many are in mourning due to atrocities committed here.

There was an opportunity here for you to respond with understanding, and then to advocate for both celebrating the opportunities that this beautiful country has afforded so many of us – as well as acknowledging the pain that many are feeling, and understanding that we need a better path forward.

Instead, the response to “shove it” has furthered animosity on both sides.

#444 SlantySemi on 07.02.21 at 9:42 am

Garth, you describe the flag as:

…and had flown above the Peace Tower in the presence of Queen Elizabeth,…

Does flying the flag in the Queen’s presence imbue it with a special magical positivity? That you make this characterization reveals that you are pro-crown and therefore pro-colonialism. Please consider why you think that, and what is bundled in that thinking.

For Canada to correct course, it MUST become an independent nation. We are still a colonial nation. The Queen remains our head of state. New Canadians must still swear allegiance to the Queen and her successors, born and those yet to be born.
Colonialism isn’t in the past…it is our present, and that must change for us to make amends.

Or is it okay that Indigenous people were conquered and subjugated?

The day it flew, I met her. Yes, that helped to make the flag special as it reminded me of her majestic presence. I am her fan. So buzz off. Garth

“They were asking for a pause on celebrations for one Canada Day out of many. It’s a reasonable request in the context of the grief that many are feeling.”

———————————-

Problem with the Woke is they make demands not requests, the demands have a threat of action\violence\crime behind them…as we see happened to Garth’s Flag. They simply do not respect the Individual’s freedom or rights. This creates a reaction among those whom have Principles and will not be intimidated. The tolerance and passivity of our leaders to the of the radical Woke’s actions is simply dangerous.

To compromise with them and give into their demands is a slippery slope, their Tactic is Incrementalism, they may display the tactic of moderation, but it is simply the ratchet effect moving good people further and further from reasonableness.
They know how to display the tactics of moderation, but without conceding anything on the goal.

Progressives are intolerant because they’re so convinced of their rationality, open-mindedness and enlightenment.

Re Females and righteousness:

“It queer how out of touch with truth women are. They live in a world of their own, and there had never been anything like it, and never can be. It is too beautiful altogether, and if they were to set it up it would go to pieces before the first sunset. #463 Mike on 07.02.21 at 11:46 am

Garth, love the blog. I don’t agree with what they did to your flag. However, I understand how they felt. I’m a proud Canadian who has been living in Japan for several years. At New Years, over here everyone sends cards to each other in celebration of the coming year. But, if someone’s family member has died during the preceding year, it is understood that nobody is to send them cards. They forego the celebration, not forever, just for that one time out of respect for the dead. It feels like that’s perhaps what was happening back home. I expect that the vast majority of people were paying their respects for the hundreds of children that died at the residential schools under the administration of the government at the time. The vast majority have not lost their love for Canada of today, nor their respect for all the good people who built, fought to protect and died for the country we have now – they are simply deeply saddened, disgusted and embarrassed at those in the past that let that terrible tragedy happen. Just this first Canada Day after those terrible events became known, it is too soon, the pain is too raw, and paying respect for the dead is what is appropriate. I think they were frustrated at what they viewed as your lack of respect for the dead by celebrating “Canada” unqualified. I love Canada too but there is a time to pay respects and mourn and “Canada” is far more than flags and fireworks. It’s our respect for those that built our country but also for those who suffered and died as a result of tragedies like the residential schools, not to mention the treatment of indigenous people overall. Paying respects for the dead children IS paying respect for Canada, IMO. I don’t doubt your love of Canada and I think you shouldn’t be so quick to doubt their love either.

You, neo-commies, are always concerned about the past, not the present, not about being a better person yourself, but about someone being wrong decades ago.

===

Alex S – It is important to understand that that the wrongs of the past laid the groundwork for the wrongs of the present. This is why it matters.

The trans-atlantic slave trade of African people was the groundwork for the anti-Black racism we see today. And the lower average household income of Black people. The way that Black people are ‘policed’.

The theft of land, language and culture, and the residential school system (amongst many other parts of history) result in what we see today: An indigenous community who is poor and marginalized. Pushed to the fringes of society.

We are reaping what we sowed over the past few hundred years. The wrongs of the past result in the inequities of today.

I’m doing what I can to be a better person. That starts with learning and listening.
Are you trying to be a better person? Is ad hominem name-calling really helping your cause?

#469 NEVER GIVE UP on 07.02.21 at 12:23 pm

It is time to #cancelglobalnews .
These media outlets are whipping up the hate!
My wife is an immigrant from Asia and we look forward to watching most of the news every evening.
She said to me that she gets an anti white message from the news now and does not want to watch the news any more.
So we have now deleted it from our watchlist.
Permanently.
CTV news lost us with their emotional slant to news many years ago so now we are looking for alternatives online.
CBC is not an option as it is a great news outlet with great resources but it is misused as a social engineering tool in my opinion.
I think I have now evolved to the next level and am looking forward to my freedom from these tyrannical news outlets.

#469 NEVER GIVE UP

Best thing you can do is avoid the news.

At 10PM there are Johnny Carson replays on Antenna TV.
At 11PM you can pick up 2 1/2 Men.

Of course there is streaming.

Here is something I didn’t know: NEWS time windows are most profitable advertising windows for most stations. Hence their interest to add 5PM news followed by 6PM news, replay 6PM news at 7PM, have 10PM news, etc. etc.

There is something to be said about the news cycle, how news is executed today, how poor the research and reporting is, how no news networks is neutral in reporting, how it does program the masses and how it is intended to swing opinions and outrage.

#471 Salutations Sally on 07.02.21 at 12:36 pm

I’m speechless. I am so sorry to hear that your flag was taken down and stolen.

I think #59 Reality is Stark, and
#233 AM in MN

are spot on when they say that the next thing Wokeness will protest, is taxes. They will not want to pay any money to the Canadian Government, yet will want more of “your” money to live on. Dire days ahead I think.

#472 Tudval on 07.02.21 at 12:42 pm

Just about four owners out of 200 on my street took a chance to display a flag this year, but I have to say usually there’s only 1 or 2, as there was no need for overt patriotism perhaps. Anyway, I have the security camera standing on guard for mine. It’s a smallish one, didn’t want anything too obtrusive, it looks really nice from a bit of a distance, set against a very green background. I think I”ll leave it there for a few weeks, my wife says we should leave it there permanently… we’ll see.

Unfortunately you are 100% correct.
The “News” media seem to be hell bent on out doing each other with political correctness.
The objective News be damned.

Global News is a sad parody of it’s former BCTV days.
Its TV rankings are plummeting as more and more viewers “cut the cord”.
( Gailus gone by Dec., he’s the wrong gender, the wrong color, and boringly hetero)

The CBC is even worse in it’s ratings plummet.
The endless social justice haranguing National News hour spewed out from distant Toronto….
$1.5 billion dollars of taxpayer money urinated against the wall, year after year, so that Canadians can be reminded at how bad they were and are.

Its tough to watch the nightly production, editing, and Newsreader screw ups on the 6pm news but, like a slow motion train wreck, or a splattered roadkill, ghoulishly appealing in a sordid way.

This is terrible. I work with many people from other countries in the world who have come to Canada seeking peace and a better life. One wishes he could move back to the country he was born in, but could never do that without fearing for his life. The Woke of Canada need to get a dose of reality.

Sorry to hear about your stolen property Garth.

Happy Canada Day

Ugh, the comments section. Garth, I’m not with you. Seems you incited this act. Waving flags in the faces of people who have suffered atrocities under this nation? At this time? Why are you surprised that would illicit an angry response?

Sorry to hear that you had to evacuate your town a couple of days ago because of the fires in your area.

I trust you are back now … or maybe not?

#478 Bruce Wood on 07.02.21 at 4:01 pm

My daughters were upset about Canada Day. I remember a quote of Democracy is a horrible system, until you compare it to any other.

Canada has its flaws but I know of no better.
My flag still flies on my barn, you are more than welcome at Midland ON if Nova Scotia turfs you out:)) lol

#479 conan on 07.02.21 at 4:47 pm

That was dumb on their part for many reasons. This flag is post 1965 and represents the New Canada, the one that is going to fix their issues. Tearing down the statue of QE II was not that bright either.

I have a feeling that you will get this flag back. In one form or another.

#480 Midori on 07.02.21 at 5:20 pm

What if the flag was stolen because of its collector’s value? And Garth advertised it for theft by telling the flag’s unique story? So, for the thieves it was as if a valuable item was left available and unguarded?

As for cohabitation of nations, the line between assimilation and merging into one people is very fine. The same goes about separate living and segregation, apartheid, or ghettoisation. At what point diasporas turn into ghettos? Independent settlements into bantustans or reservations?

As for displaying flags on the Canada Day, there is such thing as a black mourning ribbon attached to it. A Canada Day can be a mourning event, with the flags flying with mourning ribbons attached.

I’ve read people advocating to turn Canada into a democratic republic. With a lot of laws need to be rewritten to accommodate the royal approval of the bills, has anybody suggested replacing the royal power by a power of the First Nations Council? Let the First Nations rule Canada as the ultimate deciding body, let them be General Governors for the country, and lieutenant governors for the provinces?

#481 Mohamed on 07.02.21 at 5:20 pm

I’m saddened to hear what happened to the Canadian flag on your building and also the nasty things you’ve been called. In my opinion, that flag is one of the most beautiful flag in the world. I first saw it on Peace Bridge (when I crossed it as a refugee in Canada) and every time I see it, I see it as a beautiful as it was when I first saw it. You’re also true to the spirit of this beautiful country. I am sure you can handle this, but it is still sad that this has happened to you. Canada is not perfect as you yourself say, but going after people like you or burning the flag won’t fix it.

#482 Gotta Get Out of Calgary on 07.02.21 at 5:40 pm

Mr. Turner, I am so sorry for the loss of your cherished flag. When you stated receiving an onslaught of demands from work Lunenburg citizens and the town council, I had a strong sense some vandalism would occur to the flag but did not anticipate its disappearance.

They may be woke but they are not awake and mob mentality greatly lacks rational thought and maturity. Impossible to reason or have rational discussion with those who are unreasonable and irrational.

I certainly hope that the culprits are found and charged under all laws applicable to trespass (climbing your building), theft, vandalism, and any laws pertaining to the desecration of the national flag. The woke never seem to understand that actions have consequences including theirs.

Please know that, like you, your flag gave great service to the country that it represents, both in its time waving proudly above the Peace Tower and more recently hanging proudly on your properties. It remained in service representing everything good about Canada even as it went down.

#483 Gotta Get Out of Calgary on 07.02.21 at 5:42 pm

Apologies, that should be…”When you stated receiving an onslaught of demands from WOKE Lunenburg citizens and the town council, …..”

Darn autocorrect.

#418 BlackBearII

Great post BlackbearII, do not ever apologies for thugs. I have lived in this great country for close to 60 yrs, worked and have friendships with many natives. The weird thing is that they are just as confused as the rest of us over this whole political fiasco. Grant it that I am older and have elders as my friends and co-workers, they are even confused about all these names that the media and these special interest groups give them. Ask any of them that I know how they identify themselves and they say Indians. What is the issue hear, they, my friends refer me to a white in which I am.

I could care less what anybody says, I am just glad that I have a friendship with very good people.

Let’s us not politicize this, we all share the land, most of us respect each other, it is the thugs (women and men) that create trouble; for what? Are they so bored, hate themselves so much that there life goal is to create anarchy??

Terrible things happened in the past in most countries of this planet. It is sickening to hear but if a certain few wish to erase the past then how can we learn from it??

#485 ThanXMan on 07.02.21 at 6:21 pm

Sorry to hear about your flag Garth.
Thank you for standing up for Canada.
I will continue to do so too, for I have much to be grateful for.

A shameful act on the thieves part.

#487 espressobob on 07.02.21 at 9:54 pm

While some in society prove their ignorance, it might be a better to hang a white flag.

More appropriate than reasoning with degenerates.

#488 MrtnScr on 07.02.21 at 10:47 pm

Speechless and sad.

#489 Canadian on 07.02.21 at 11:42 pm

Unfortunately, I’m horribly unsurprised.

I have lived in several countries, many of which are considered third world. My best friend and best man was kidnapped in one such country.

I spent part of Canada Day with a Colombian family who told me how thankful they are to be free of the sicarios who roamed the mid 90s streets of Cali. Their son plays hockey with one of my sons. They expressed their gratitude that I wore a Canada shirt, and mentioned their disappointment that they had to justify their celebration with a follow up “but we’re immigrants.”

I would wager a great deal of money that the folks who wanted to cancel Canada Day haven’t spent any time in a third world country. They also have no friends of family who served as peacekeepers in Somalia or Bosnia and witnessed atrocities that those veterans can only whisper about.

What happened in the residential schools is atrocious. Nothing will make it right. Including stopping the celebration of a country which has a free press, a country which allows for multiculturalism, and a country which allows freedom of identity.

If you were to ask any person in an oppressive regime what country they would move their family to, 100% would list Canada in their top five. The people who cannot accept this should strongly consider living abroad in several different countries before they finalize their opinion.

In a country like China, or like North Kore, this is a non story. The protesters are wiped out, and life goes on for everyone else. The fact that people can voice their dissent and displeasure is a feature of Canada, not a reason to cancel a celebration.

I have so many questions about the intelligence of so many in our country.

Garth: I sincerely hope you find that flag. It is shameful that people tore it down and left those messages.

#490 John Scaling on 07.03.21 at 10:11 am

Dear Garth,
So sorry to heàr that your flag was stolen. If the thieves don’t like Canada maybe they should go to a more progressive country like Russia.

#491 Joe figel on 07.03.21 at 10:12 am

I’m proud of you Garth. We need more people like you in this country. Stand your ground.

#492 Anna on 07.03.21 at 11:50 am

I’m sorry to hear about the flag. So sad!
What those cardboards had to say is “Education before reconciliation” and “No pride in vandalism”!

Things likes this make me wonder if I made the right choice 10 years ago immigrating to Canada. Too much liberalism, tolerance, socialism…

#493 Canada Proud on 07.03.21 at 1:22 pm

Upsetting and sad to see…Never, ever apologize to the mob. It sates nor appeases them not. DEI in this instance ironically demands intolerance and bullying.

#494 Canada Sucks on 07.03.21 at 10:46 pm

This country is not nearly what many would like to believe it is. A lot of reconciliation needs to happen before we can be proud to wave that flag again.

#495 Michael on 07.04.21 at 1:21 am

Garth, so sorry to hear this. Like you said, hopefully they find perspective later in their lives.

#496 nlabixa on 07.04.21 at 12:43 pm

I’m very proud to call myself Canadian. Raised my 2 Canadian flags (1 by our front door and the other in our porch). Very blessed to chose Canada way back in the late 70’s. Raised my family here and never regretted my move. Canada might not be perfect but It gave me the opportunity to improve and live a life I can only dream of from where I came from.
