There was little doubt we needed each other. Badly. I’d recently lost my job and my identity. He had it worse. Abandoned, sores on his flanks, a cone of shame on his head and a shaved rump with a razored rat tail. Months in a cage. People came and left with cute puppies. He watched.
At the shelter our gaze met. Sad eyes. He turned away as if not wishing to be rejected again. I did not. I could not. Bandit came home with me, looking like a broken combat dog. That night he found the pulse and warmth of the dishwasher and tucked into it, wary of people.
He grew enough hair to defeat every vacuum cleaner ever invented. That abused body sprouted a lionesque mane, flowing feathers from his legs and a skirt any swirling Scott would die for. A purebred cream Chow, ancient and noble. Serene and aloof, showing affection in tiny, precious dollops. But always, the eyes of love felt upon my back.
Over thirteen years we lived in city, country, hamlet and town. On a farm. Above a store. In the urban core. For a while the only place to walk him was a downtown green space populated by street people, junkies, the troubled and destitute. The first day or two were terrifying, until this creature spent time smiling at those society didn’t want, letting soiled, punctured hands caress his coat.
All Chows, it turns out, know everything. So he walked me, set the route and duration and the treat rules. During the time we lived in a downtown hotel, all marble and fuss, he migrated to the lobby and held court. Weary travellers, yearning for their own pets, couldn’t stay away. One day I found him surrounded by the Russian national hockey team, all on their knees, looking like he was fluent.
For a spell we lived near a bar strip. At its beating heart was a dive where the servers wore wicked short shirts and plunging necklines. We’d walk by and the girls would flood out to the patio, bending over Bandit and stroking his fur. I swear he gave me a sly little glance, preening amid a sea of cleavage. Boys with their beers looked on in pure envy.
Speaking of the sea, in Lunenburg he loved it. Lobster gear on the wharf was inhaled, gangways trotted, otters ferreted and much time spent sitting with nose to the salt wind. By age 15 there was one spring-loaded knee, a bum foot and copious naps. But going out the door was still showtime. He knew how he looked. And he approved.
Just a dog, of course. Number seven for Dorothy and I. But the years together were so meaningful, so extended, so blessed. A gift.
Thank you, Bandit. Sleep well.

Garth,
He had a happy life. Good memories live on.
Dogs are so precious, its so sad when they go. Its clear you gave Bandit a wonderful life and there was so much love between you all. Hope you find comfort in the many happy memories you have together.
Sorry to hear about Bandit Garth sounds like you had some great times.
Garth, I am so sorry to hear this :( <3

Who was blessed to be found and given a wonderful home by Garth and Dorothy where he enriched their lives..
Sorry for the loss of your companion.
Beautifully written Garth. Sorry for your loss. I was just looking at his birthday picture. He was a happy dog.

RIP Bandit. So very sorry for your loss Garth. I know how much our furbabies mean to us.
Very touching words written, he was blessed to have someone such as yourself loved, admired and cherished. I am truly sorry for your loss.
Not just a dog, Garth. I’m very sorry. Remember those times together forever. He was a good boy.
Garth, having had two Chows I appreciated your story of these wonderful dogs. Sorry for the loss of your good friend Bandit.
Not a pet guy myself. My older brother had an affinity with animals, they’d gravitate to him. Sounds crazy, truth. I guess they could see, feel his warmth, love. We had a parrot growing up, that damn thing loved Joe. When he’d come home the parrot would go nuts; ‘hello Joe, Joe…hello joe’. He’d put the parrot is in hands, on his shoulder. Spent so much time with it. Later in life had a dog, named Tyson. it loved Joe and Joe loved the dog. When Tyson died my brother never had the strength to get another pet. He didnt bury Tyson, kept his ashes…and asked our younger brother to promise if he were to die to throw his and tyson’s over Niagara Falls
Joe passed Feb 10, 2020.. We tossed their ashes Aug 15th, 2020
RIP Joe
‘But always, the eyes of love felt upon my back.’
I know that feeling.
I will need to speak with Michael Cohen about all this.
For now, rest in peace, Bandit, and you take care, Garth.
Dogs become part of the family and true friends. I love dogs and my only complaint is that they aren’t with us long enough. Sorry for your loss, Garth.
Sorry to hear about Bandit, he looks like he was a very happy dog. I get it, we had to put down our dog earlier this year as well. It’s hard at the time but now several months later I’m left with the warmth of the memories heading into winter. Dogs are sometimes the best thing in life (even my kids get that).
Take care.
Sorry to hear of the loss of Bandit.
I’m sorry for your loss Garth. That is a beautiful tribute.
Touching post, and I’m sorry for your loss Garth – truly.
“We don’t deserve dogs.” – my wife
That’s heartbreaking Garth. What a terrible year all around.
Rest in Peace Bandit. You were beloved by all the blog dogs!
Lost my lab a couple years back – I was devastated.
Just got a Cane Corso puppy about a month ago. He is my little boy. Follows me everywhere, sleeps right next to me every night.
I’m already dreading the day I have to say goodbye to him.
We’ll always remember Bandit – he kept his owner sane.
I’m so very sorry Garth at the passing of Bandit. What a wonderful life you gave him. Rescue dogs are the best and always seem to know that you gave them a second chance. He was very lucky to have found you and your wife and it sounds like he gave as much or more in return to you. It’s very hard to lose a beloved dog. Hugs to you both.
Your beautifully written words made me shed a tear this morning. My best friend passed recently. Dogs have such a connection with us and bring people together in ways that nothing else can. Truly a gift from God. My condolences for your loss.
Sympathies, from Bandits extended family, to yours.
A very touching tribute. Very sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss Garth. I am certain Bandit had an awesome life with you.
“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive.” – Gilda Radner
That’s very nice Garth. You both deserved each other’s loving company. I’m happy you gave him a good life. Dogs Rule.
The “Bandit” that stole our hearts.
The only thing worse than losing an animal is watching them suffer in the pain and infirmity of old age.
Sorry to hear about your buddy Garth.
2020, the year that really, really sucked.
Me reading Bandit’s write-up: “I’m not crying, you’re crying!”
Sorry for your loss, Garth.
I’m sorry for yours and Dorothy’s loss. We’re used hearing about Bandit and seeing him in the sidebar photos. It is clear that he got lucky when you two found him at the shelter. His presence here will be missed.
“The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven not man’s.” – Mark Twain
Sorry for your loss Garth. He was a lucky dog to have you as an owner.
Wow.
Remember the important things in life like our fellow four legged travelers. This post brought a tear to my eye. He had a good life by the sounds of it.
Sad but inspiring.
Every time someone gets a pet, in the back of their mind, they’ve got to realize that the pleasure is going to be temporary, and that they will likely outlast the animal. Sadness ensues.
But, that’s a microcosm for life, I guess.
My son recently rescued a beautiful dog – a puppy – that quickly grew into a gorgeous Lab-Huskie-Sheppard prowler. 6 months later he rescued another older dog – this time one with only 3 legs. He’s adorable.
It’s heartening to know there are those who care for animals and dedicate the time and effort to look after them.
I suppose the rewards are worth it.
Bye Bandit.
So sorry Garth. My heart goes out to you and Dorothy.
I’m so sorry, Garth and family.
Oh no ! Sad to lose unconditional love. The memories continue I hope. RIP
Such sad news Garth. My heart goes out to you and Dorothy. Bandit knew he was lovely and beloved. May he Rest In Peace…but may he also still find a good dog bone, chase many furry critters and get into general doggy mischief on the other side.
Another reminder that time is precious.
RIP Bandit.
Condolences to you and Dorothy.
Since you, Dorothy and Bandit lived by the ocean I offer up this blessing to your (our) beloved dog:
“Fair winds and following seas”
My condolences, Garth, for losing Bandit…losing a beloved dog can be really, really hard.
I remember when i broke up with my GF of 2 yrs. It was a tough one and I was devastated…3 months afterwords we bumped into each other and she told me of how her dog Comet (a blue healer) had become permanently injured (hips?) after chasing a squirrel on one of her daily long walks…and thus could no longer accompany her any longer.
We spoke for only a few minutes and then left.
But then tears flooded down my face and I started to cry heavily at the thoughts of Comet being injured and that he’d no longer be in my life. Man I loved that dog…he brought so much happiness to my life with his zany, goofy ways and unconditional love.
I call dogs ‘crack for the soul’ (though I’ve not done crack… i just equate its supposedly delightful highs in the same way)….I always think if you’ve not had either kids or a dog then you’ve missed out on something big in life. I’m blessed that I’ve had at least one grand experience.
Blessings to you and your family, Garth…and also of course to Bandit.
Been reading since 2013, never commented.
RIP Bandit. My condolences. Will hold my buddy closer this eve.
I had a couple of dogs growing up. They are gone now. My parents swore to not get anymore because of how sad it was when they passed.
So sorry for your loss Garth & Dorothy.
Thank you for sharing Bandit with us as well.
What a great dog!
Beautiful Garth
sorry on comet: meant blue heeler not healer…though he really was a healer of the soul/heart as most dogs are…so maybe my misspell was a Freudian slip..and a good one at that.
My condolences to you and Dorothy. I had to let go of my beautiful poodle Lucy recently after 17 years together . As a very longtime reader of your writings , I appreciate what you put into this blog.

The things in life that truly matter.
A sad day for both you and Dorothy.

‘Just a dog, of course’ said no dog custodian. Ever.
A sad day today but many happy memories for the future. Thanks for sharing him with us.
Sorry for your loss Garth. Bandit added a lot of texture to your colourful and successful life.
ah dang, sorry to hear.
Sounds like Bandit had a good run though.

It’ never easy losing a loved one, and close family member.

Wonderful writing. I could just feel the love but tears fell on the last sentence. RIP Bandit and take care Garth.
Very sorry for your loss, Garth and Dorothy. Dogs really are the best people.
Rest easy Bandit. Condolences to your family Garth. I’ll make my donation the the Cochrane AB Human society (home town of my favourite Weimaraner) in Bandits honour.
Hey Buddy, like Cynthia, long time reader first time commenter.
That is painful. been there several times, never easy at the end.
Take heart and know He’s in a better place, no pain now for Him.
I am sorry for your loss, Garth.
Sorry for your loss, Garth. My mom had her 15 (or 16 or 17, not really sure) dog put down 2 weeks ago yesterday. It was a really tough decision, and she’s really missing the dog. They give us so much love in exchange for the food, walks, treats, etc.
Well Garth
Today I was going to send another post where I drone on and whine about real estate…
After reading this , I think I’ll spare you the mantra.
Sorry about Bandit, sounds like he was very lucky to have you guys and vice versa….
Sounds like maybe a long night. I have had some of those and they are tough. I think you can take some solace in the comfort you probably provided him thorough his whole life and in the end. Sorry for the sad news!
My condolence Garth on the loss of your best friend.
Oh I’m so sad to hearing of Bandit’s passing. Thanks for sharing the story of your time with him. So happy to hear that you rescued him from the shelter. Beautiful dog….I understand why he was a chick magnet. RIP Bandit
Sorry to hear, boss. RIP Bandit.
Condolences.
I’m so sorry for your loss Garth.
Sorry for your loss Garth, he was well loved and you gave him the gift of a great life..
RIP Bandit. Condolences for your loss.
I had a cat by the name of “Quizical” who lived 16 years. When they go, it is like they take a part of you with them.
So sorry for your loss. Be grateful for the mutual good times you shared. Condolences to both of you.
My condolences to you and Dorothy. Bandit’s passing will leave a huge hole in your life.
“The pain I feel now is the happiness I had before. That’s the deal.”
-C.S. Lewis
May his memory be your blessing.
Sorry for your loss. Rest well doggo.
I’ve been dreading this post…… well, here it is. Sad! Sorry!
I’ve never commented before, but have read almost daily.
Our furbabies give us unconditional love and when they leave us, it leaves a huge hole in our hearts.
My thoughts and prayers to you and Dorothy.
Hello Garth,
Having just gone through the loss of Geneva, my Bernese as you know, I’m very sorry to hear of your loss. These beautiful animals fill such a big space in our hearts and in our lives. I know you will miss Bandit greatly.
Heartbreaking news Garth, so sorry for your loss. I know the feeling all too well. I’m happy that Bandit was able to live such a long and happy life at your side. He was a beautiful dog.
RIP Bandit
No loss like the loss of a dog! Hurts like hell!
RIP Bandit, and Garth, thanks for sharing! Sending caring thoughts your way…
This is the saddest thing ever, Garth!. So sorry to hear it. Tears down my eyes actually. Rip Bandit
Sorry to hear Garth.
A sad day indeed.
So very sorry for your loss. Dogs are all that we humans should aspire to. Animals enrich our lives immeasurably.Deepest sympathy
R.I.P. Bandit. So sorry for your loss, Garth and Dorothy. My Millie came over to see why I was sniffling. I dread the day.
RIP Bandit my condolences to you and Dorothy. Sending love and peace to you even more so during this time.
So sorry Garth and Dorothy for the loss of your precious Bandit. I’ve enjoyed seeing his pictures and hearing about him through your eyes. We lost our boy Max 4 years ago Nov 8th right on the last US election day, just like you now and the grief was enormous. Remember all your good memories of Bandit in the coming days. He’s crossed the rainbow bridge and will see again one day. Take care.
So sad to hear. We had to put our border collie down in Sept. Phoebe lived to be 16.5 years and was our biggest cheer leader. My thoughts are with you and Dorothy.
Sorry for your loss Garth. I can feel your pain.
I’m an absolute dog lover and a person that had multiple dogs all my life. My last dog was one of those special animals that was super in tune with my thoughts and emotions. The problem with pets is that the amount of quality time with them is way too short. That’s why I can’t bear to have one again.
Vive La Dogs’
I am sorry for your loss Garth.
It is without doubt that Bandit had a happy, loving and secure home with you and Dorothy.
RIP Bandit
Thought are with you Garth. Condolences and well wishes all around. Dogs are a treasure. Human beings fortunate enough to experience affection, loyalty and companionship from a dog are truly blessed.
The smiling buddah closed his eyes
Unburdened now of whimpers and sighs.
His gentle soul unleashed from pain
Awaits the day you’ll meet again.
For death unlocks a sacred door
Through which the spirit then can soar.
Into the mysterious divine
Reserved for a beloved canine.
Blessings,
Skylar
Who wouldn’t loved to have been Bandit
I have kids, grandkids and one fur baby. Even though I’m considered a grump (I’m being generous) and like most grumps, I’m soft inside. everyone knows that my “buddy” Webster gets the royal treatment. We’re about the same age and I’m not sure whose arthritis is worse.
I shed a tear for bandit this morning in a public place. I couldn’t help it. I’ve been there several times.
Take care.
Dogs bring out the best in us.
Sorry for your loss, he was a great dog.
extremely based blog post
Sorry for your loss of your friend Garth and Dorothy. Dogs bring out the best in people.
Sorry for your loss Garth & Dorothy. Dogs, we don’t deserve them bruh!
Heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
I’m so very sorry to hear of Bandit’s passing. They give us so much, but take a piece of our heart when they leave us. Our condolences to you and Dorothy.
I’m so sorry for your loss Garth and thank you for this glimpse of the deep love amd magic that Bandit brought into your lives. And to live his last years at the sea, the most bountiful smell buffet any dog could hope for, was a true gift.
What beautiful Bandit memories you have shared with us over the years. He grounded you and Dorothy with his unconditional love and trust. A gift and a huge loss for both of you
Garth and Dorothy
Sorry to hear of your loss.

Thank you for all that you do for us.
GAAAAAAAAAAH – dogs are the best – sorry to hear Garth
Amazing how a dog, who most readers never met, could cause such an outpouring of love and sympathy. He touched so many. Animals are special beyond understanding. Condolences Garth.
RIP Bandit
Dogs are Great
beer is good
people are covid crazy
Im so sorry for your loss Garth. Believe me I understand…since we also just lost our beloved beagle Regi.
RIP to our lost friends… and by Gods grace we will one day reunite
:-(
The hardest part of having a dog.
Been there.
Thanks for all the dog photos (and the other stuff too.) LOL
Rest in peace, dear Bandit.
Be at peace Dorothy & Garth.
While reading this post I remembered the story, many years ago, of the night you slipped on ice and broke your leg.
And the appreciation you spoke of having a best friend stay with you as long as necessary until aid could find you two.
The good memories typically include dogs eh.
All the best, Russ
I’ve always liked the idea that one should

Sorry for your loss
Terrible news – sounds like he was well-loved, and that’s all they ever ask for in life. Take care Garth.
Wonderful tribute! Sincere condolences.
Heartbreaking that our beloved critters have such short life spans.
Heartwarming the devotion and affection they give us each and every day, we in turn shower them with comfort, love, and dedication. Life would be so empty without our furry friends.
Animals teach us so much, Bandit sounds like he was an exemplary Professor of Humanity:-)
Up and up and up she goes…..
Declining immigration is another blow to a Canadian economy that has relied heavily on foreigners to drive labour force growth and demand, particularly in major cities. In Toronto, for example, the drop in newcomers is already generating cracks in the city’s condo market.

Dorothy and Garth,
our sincerest condolences. We send you huge hugggss from here.
We are saddened by your loss of your lovely boy. Your solace shall be in the memories you all shared.
We, do NOT believe that we meet our pups by accident.
As with our loved many, we believe your beloved Bandit was fated to you by your prior pups. And that Bandit now joins them in awaiting you, in Heaven.
If, in time, you folks consider sharing love with another, it will be Bandit arranging the “coincidence” of that meet.
As a departed and dearest Franciscan Friar friend always reminded us: “It is all about the love.”
First time commenting – heartfelt condolences for your loss. Dogs inspire us to be better and unconditionally provide the warmth and compassion that our species so desperately needs. I’m so appreciative of your generosity in sharing your insights and life with Bandit.
So sorry to hear this Garth.
Very sorry to hear about Bandit…. You gave him a good life and I am sure he enriched yours….Many of us (myself for sure) greet dogs in the woods before saying anything to the owner….
Hi Garth,
Longtime listener, first time caller. So very sorry for your loss. Thank you for everything you do. Sending you my best from one of the many obscene housing markets in this ridiculous and great country.
Sincerely,
Dennis Pastrami
Sorry for your loss, Garth.
Brings a lot of perspective for today. I’m turning off the news and taking my dog for her 3rd walk today.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Sorry to read about your friend
…a hard eventuality it is
It’s that silent space when they’re gone that really hits you
Sounds like Bandit had a great life with you. Sorry for your loss.
Great tribute. Our long furry companion is currently 14.5, and she too will move on very soon. It’s sad but our time together has been amazing.
Someone is chopping onions around here. Sorry for your loss Garth.
My condolences to you and Dorothy. Thanks for posting this amazing tribute to Bandit – it brought a tear to my eye.
Sorry for your loss. Sounds like he lived an amazing life with you.
Dear Garth and Dorothy
This was a lovely and touching tribute. You have my most sincere condolences.
Alex
Condolences to you and Dorothy. Loss of a close family member is difficult regardless of being furry or not, two or four legs.
Sorry for your loss, Garth. I hope that you will meet Bandit and the rest of your dog gang in the rainbow bridge.
The story tells of a lush green meadow just “this side of Heaven” (i.e. before one enters into it). Rainbow Bridge is the name of both the meadow and the adjoining pan-prismatic conveyance connecting it to Heaven.
According to the story, when a pet dies, it goes to the meadow, restored to perfect health and free of any injuries. The pet runs and plays all day with the others; there is always fresh food and water, and the sun is always shining. However, it is said that while the pet is at peace and happy, they also miss their owner whom they left behind on Earth.
When their owner dies, they too arrive at the meadow, and that is when the pet stops playing, turns, sniffs at the air and looks into the distance where they see their beloved owner. Excited, they run as fast as they can, until owner and pet are once more in union. The pet licks its owners in joy while the human looks into the soft eyes of their pet—who might have been absent on Earth, but never absent in their heart. Then side by side, they cross the Rainbow Bridge together into Heaven, never again to be separated.

Sorry buddy. Dogs have a way of making a good day great and the worst days bearable.
You have touched the hearts of all us who have lost our precious companions with that beautiful tribute. Thank you for sharing him with us Garth. Deepest condolences.
Sorry for your loss Garth and Dorothy!
Your first words were very touching. And it is true the universe will work in mysterious ways to bring a person and animal together at a specific time in life. As you said we needed each other. Dogs are great companions.
J
Realizing the gist of this column blurred these old eyes with involuntary moisture. Sounds like you were both fortunate to have made each others acquaintance for a long friendship. Sorry to hear. RIP pooch.
Thank you for sharing your precious memories.
Thank you for sharing about your boy, Garth. Very touching. I am thinking of my dear boy, a black lab that once shared almost 14 years of life with me. He was special, just like your Bandit. I know the pain of your loss. I believe that all animals have spirits and we have a connection that transcends the physical. Perhaps those that have blessed us with their presence in this life have been our companions in others as well.
I hate dogs, but RIP garth. It sucks to lose a good friend.
ill smoke one out for him after work.
What a great tribute. I’m sorry for your loss Dorothy and Garth.
So sorry to hear about Bandit.
Garth, Dorothy,
My condolences on your loss.
He knows he is loved.
Stay strong.
I am so sorry, Garth! It is never ‘just a dog’.
RIP furry friend.
My condolences, Garth. The memories live on forever …
Sadly dogs just don’t live long enough..it’s brutal. Condolences.
So sorry for your loss, Garth & Dorothy. He was not ‘just a dog’. They are members of the family, the ones you actually like. Our dogs give us love relentlessly and unconditionally. Such a beautiful ode you crafted for Bandit, I have tears in my eyes. Sleep well, Bandit.
Condolences to the Turner’s Bandit was a beautiful dog.
So sorry for your loss. Dogs’ lives are criminally short.
So sorry to hear that. Good dogs tear at your heart. I still miss my Frodo, a noble Newfie cross.
My heart breaks for you and yours Garth. No words can comfort.

Gutted to read this, Garth. He was such a beautiful and loyal companion, from what I’ve come to learn reading this blog. The last verse of Kipling’s spot-on “The Power of a Dog”:
We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long –
So why in – Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Hugs, Chimingin
Sorry for your loss Garth.
Garth, great post today, and my condolences. Bandit was a legend. Great stories.
Garth it looks like he finshed up VERY lucky….
Best post :)
Bandit was fortunate to be loved by people who had been carefully trained by 6 of his predecessors. We should all be so lucky as to be reincarnated as a dog lover’s 7th dog.
Cried when I read this post. So very sorry for the loss of your beloved Bandit! Dogs are truly the best thing we are blessed to be owned by. He is at peace on the other side of the rainbow bridge?

Sorry to hear about Bandit, Garth/Dorothy. May he rest in peace and may you both find solace in the fact that he’s had an awesome life with you.
Ah hell. So sorry for you guys. Another notch in 2020’s belt-of-BS
I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years now and have never commented. Like Bandit, I enjoyed the sights and sounds from the sideline, wary of wading in to where the people are. But I have to extend my sympathies for your loss. This was a beautiful devotional to a loyal and handsome companion, and he was as much a reason to visit the blog as your skill with the written word. I wish you both well, and that you were able to enjoy the last of your time with Bandit in a way that you will cherish. I look forward to your continued wit and insight into current events, and am a more endeared reader for your willingness to break from the storm of current events to stop and acknowledge the personal events that make even us financial folk human. Thank you.
Always focus on the love and life we gave our animals….the loss is always hard…..the good times always make it worth it.
Sorry to hear about Bandit.
Appreciate you taking the time to adopt.
Garth and Dorothy so sorry about your loss, I am a dog lover myself and can’t imagine what you are going through now. Bandit will be remembered forever and the memories that you both have will be with you forever and ever. Sending you lots of hugs…❤️
So sorry, Garth and Dorothy. We know how much you loved him and he loved you.
My condolences to you and you Dorothy. As you said he was just a dog but a friend as well, the memories are real.
Hold them dearly Hon. Mr. Turner!
Garth, my condolences to you and Dorothy, I’ve experienced this heartbreak myself a couple years back. I also comforted myself with the thought of all of the wonderful years that he gave us and others and the amazing adventures he had throughout is little life. You are an amazingly talented writer. Your words on this Blog are a perfect blend of reason, brutal honesty, humor and compassion. You know just what medicine some of these souls on here need, even if they oppose you and don’t understand. Thank you for being a good human being, Bandit was one lucky dog.
Bless Bandit for caring for you, Dorothy,
and the world he befriend everywhere he went. Bless you Garth for being there.
Sorry for your loss. God Bless.
Sorry for your loss.
Sorry to hear Garth…it’s never easy…I wish dogs and cats were like turtles and lived longer than us….
RIP Bandit, you magnificent boy. Condolences to you and Dorothy.
Truly sorry for your loss. I’ve been there and done that with three Golden Retrievers in my life. Ripped my heart out each time. When it’s time, please do “rescue” again. The short cut to Valhalla is revealed only to those who rescue dogs.
Cheers to the wonderful years you shared.
A life well lived. Something worth celebrating.
Sorry for your loss.
He got lucky finding you Garth. You gave him a great life.
Beautifully written, Garth. Sorry for your loss.
Bless you, Garth and Dorothy, for the love and care you gave this noble beast…
Fifteen years are the tribute to that.
Very sad to hear the news.
/goes and hugs his Shikoku-ken
Kilt.
A glowing tribute for a fantastic being.
My condolences for your loss. You obviously did well by Bandit, good on you.
In Dog we trust.
Very sorry to hear this Mr. Garth. I lost my best friend last year. He’s the background on my phone, and I still miss and think about him every day.
I’ve always enjoyed this quote, “Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them, and filling an emptiness we didn’t ever know we had”
What a beautiful tribute. He was a very lucky boy to have you and Dorothy. Thank you for rescuing him, giving him a home and for loving him. Sounds like you have a heart of gold and I’m so sorry to hear that it’s been broken by his passing. Rest in peace, Bandit, and glad you will have many wonderful memories to cherish, Garth!
Sorry for your loss Garth, felt like I’ve gotten to know bandit through your blog over the years. Have an older rescue dog myself who is starting to lose the battle with father time. I appreciate every day.
Never posted before, but want to say thank you for everything, reading your blog has changed my life for the better and something I look forward to every day.
Yak
Bless you for rescuing him. Rest in peace Bandit.
Mes sincères sympathies.
Life is a series of memories, much like links in a chain. All my dog memories are strong, durable and everlasting. The time spent not owning a dog, is lost and mostly forgotten. Losing your dog truly hurts, but we somehow manage to soldier on until the next one arrives.
I think they feel the same way.
Rest in Peace Bandit.
Well said my bearded friend!
We lost our boy recently after 12 wonderful years and so many memories.
You shared time together on this planet and both learned from that time.
As they say” I want to be the person my dog see’s “
RIP Bandit. Sorry to hear he has passed on, but your post is a lovely tribute. Virtual hugs Garth!
Always so sad to lose a loving friend and buddy. Great you found one another. Dogs are loyal and so better than most two legged homos. RIP Bandit. I know it’s early but will you find another pouch? Sincerest condolences.
Sorry for your loss Garth. Just went through it with my Hermes back in June of this year. We had him for 14.5 years. A piece of us is missing.
I am sorry for your loss Garth…
Very sorry for your loss. We were the lucky owners of a Chow/Golden mix who was with us for 14 years, also from a pound. Wonderful with people, loved and protected our children. Complete bastard with other dogs. Still miss him, its been 10 years.
Sorry to hear about Bandit Garth.
We lost our little jack Zoe after 15 years a while back
and it still hurts.
Take care.
Sorry to hear that, Garth.
Don’t let your sadness prevent you from adopting another dog. There are so many dogs out there that need a good home and one of them can be the start of another great adventure for you, as it was with Bandit.
Sorry for your loss.
Awww…that sucks. A beautiful ball of fur to have as a buddy. Sorry to hear that.
I’m very sorry for your loss. I know Bandit had a great life and you were both lucky to meet one another…
You can tell he was a special dog. And you blessed him with a great name. A good chunk of him lives in both you and your wife. He will not be forgotten. Bandit.
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss Garth. Thanks for sharing. I inherited a 2 year old Shi-tzu in college, and I still think of her most days.
“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.”
― Mark Twain
Brought back a flood of memories, we still miss our best friend everyday. Sorry for your loss.
I get so tired of all the crap in the news these days.
Thank you for sharing something to help us remember the things that are truly important in life.
Long may your heart be warmed by fond memories of your lost friend.
So sorry for your loss. Thank you for this beautiful post and sharing your memories of Bandit. I’m glad you found each other. Both of you are good souls. Rest in peace Bandit.
A touching and wonderful tribute to Bandit. I cried my eyes out.
My sincere condolences to you and Mrs. Turner.
May the memories you carved together, be with you like a shining beacon.
Bandit – we will ALL miss you.
Every day with them is a gift, sorry for your loss

Long-time reader, first time poster. Thank you for your constant, tireless work on this blog, Garth.
So sorry for your loss.
I am going to cry. You gave that dog a wonderful life. I am so sorry.
Such a tribute to Bandit. It brought back heartfelt memories of my dog Jarrod, also a rescue and 11 years old when he entered my life. He lived another 3 years and 3 months and will never be forgotten. All the best to you Garth and Dorothy.
Sorry to hear, Garth. Great tribute to Bandit.
A coworker’s horse died this week giving birth. A ray of sunshine, the foal made it and is doing well.
well written as always. thank you
One of your best posts.
Written from the heart.
I’m so sorry to hear Garth. He was very lucky to have you.
Sorry for your loss.
I’m very sorry for your loss. They are so much more than ‘just dogs’ and we’re lucky that they like us so much. Thank you for giving him the loving home and wonderful life that every dog deserves.
Beautiful tribute Mr. Turner. I too am a dog lover and know your pain. I’m so sorry for what I know your going through. God bless.
Sorry to hear that Garth. Never easy… all the best to you and Dorothy.
I am very sorry for your loss. He was a great dog. He was very fortunate to have you and your wife as companions. He will live on in the memory of all who read your blog. While organized religion holds no appeal for me, the one reason I would be prepared to believe in an afterlife would be for the simple reason that I could be reunited with my dogs, if they would have me.
We love Bandit! Sounds like you gave him a great happy life. Doggy heaven will be good to him.
You know why we don’t have a dog? I’m afraid to not be able to keep my promisse one day and have to give him/her away to another family… It’s like giving away a child. Dogs are too good for this world. Honest good creatures. We humans have a lot to learn from them. I’m sorry about Bandint. But he’s got what he didn’t have before you took him home. He had a happy life. And it was your family who gave it to him.
Bandit hit the jackpot that day you wandered in. Lucky him. Good for you. I bet he got the very best in everything.
Dogs and dog people, I like both most every time.
Our condolences.
I am so very saddened to know that your wonderful canine companion has passed away. You and Dorothy gave Bandit a loving home, safety, good grub, and the best care. I am sure what you got back was beyond counting or compare. God bless you and Bandit.
my most sincere condolences, and another great write-up, as ever. Dogs give us so much, but the trade-off is seeing them leave.
Tonight, we will raise our glass to Bandit.
Very well written Garth. I enjoyed that Eulogy
RIP Bandit
Everyone thinks they have the best dog and everyone is correct.
First Smoking Man and now Bandit !
it’s been a tough year for blog dogs all round….
:-(
Sorry Garth, that’s terrible :(
This news makes my eyes well up. What a lovely tribute, and what a lovely dog. My sincere condolences to you, Garth, and Dorothy, on the loss of your beloved companion Bandit. As has been noted above, his presence on the blog will be missed.
Very sorry to hear this. Tough losing man’s best friend. Our thoughts are with you.
Can’t think of anything harder in this world than saying goodbye to a treasured companion. Words never explain the loss. Most of Us know that scenario…
Sometimes we don’t realize what we have until we don’t.
Sorry for your loss Garth, RIP Bandit.
Dogs are automatic heartbreakers as we all outlive them. I’ll say a little prayer for all of you.
Bye big fluffy guy. I enjoyed your Instagram feed.
Ps. do not growl at Smoking man up there okay?

A dog’s companionship is like no other. They see you at your best and worst, and somehow will always remain by your side (or charming strangers in a lobby). This is the hardest part about having a dog in one’s life. I’ve been there too. And yet, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
Cherish your wonderful memories of Bandit. Wishing you and Dorothy all the best at this time. So sorry for your loss.
A beautiful tribute to Bandit. Love the picture, very fitting. You gave him a new life and developed a strong bond that comes alive in your words.
Fred the Border Collie here Garth.
Bandit has arrived at the Rainbow Bridge Meadow and is settling in nicely, although he misses you and Mom terribly….Consoling him helps somewhat, but it takes time…
My buddies and I are showing him all the ropes….where the tastiest treats are hidden, who gives the best tummy-rubs, the warmest, sunny creek-bank on which to lay down and catch an afternoon nap, and at what angle to tilt your head so your nostrils can catch the most intriguing breezes….He & I can’t get over how nimble he is, now that all four legs are in perfect working order… He runs circles around me!
I’ve tried to teach him the finer points in rounding up cows, but he shows absolutely NO interest in such plebeian endeavors….Harrmph!
He has regaled all of us with his life exploits while in your stewardship, and we all agree that Fortune had finally smiled on him and that he could have found no better caretakers than you and Dorthy.
(He did confide to me that your bar-girl story was not quite as previously stated….. evidently you attached his leash to the patio, told him to sit up and look handsome, and then gleefully stood close to the patio railing while all the girls leaned far over to pet him….)
Cheer up and remember the good times…He says to tell you he’ll meet up with you again, eventually….. he’s biding his time and practicing his “I’ve Missed You” leap so that it’s perfect!
Regards.
Fred
Very sorry for your loss Garth. You didn’t lose just a dog, you’ve lost your friend. My condolences.
Sorry for Dorothy and you. Bandit was loved. Every dog should be so loved.
Sorry for your loss Mr T, Bandit was a good boy.
Very sorry to hear, Garth. It is weird that some of us don’t know you personally but have followed for years and think of you as a friend. Sincere condolences.
Garth, what an eloquent tribute to dear Bandit. Not too many dry eyes in my house after reading your eulogy. Bandit was a lovely boy and he’ll be missed. Here’s hoping you’ll meet up with each other on the Rainbow Bridge when the time is right. Peace and love to you and Dorothy on such a sad day.
Rest well Bandit.
Garth,
So very sorry for your and Dorothy’s loss. Bandit sounds like he was an exceptional and wise friend who touched the hearts of many. Boy did he also luck out in finding you two.
Beautifully written and touching tribute for this brave, old soul.
Take care
When I was growing up in a temperate country, I must have raised over 100 dogs in my childhood. Most died early from bot larvae, tape worms and wounds during mating season.
My condolences Garth, RIP Bandit. To steal a line from the Tragically Hip, “Heaven is a better place today”
Sorry for your loss Garth, and a beautiful tribute.
Garth, I am so sorry for your loss. Dogs are precious. They are ones of a few who really love you.
Truly sorry Garth. Know the feeling haven’t been able to get another since I lost my last dog years ago, don’t think I could bear it again.
Bandit is chasing Smoking Man now.
G_d bless their walk.
Sorry to hear about your loss Garth. He did bring a smile to my face when I seen his photos
All the best to you and Dorothy
My neighbour is terrified of dogs, and I was looking for some way to explain what “dog people” see in them.
I still haven’t. But there is a dog-sized hole in my life that cannot be filled any other way. I hope, when you and your wife feel it is time, that another dog will come into your life and make you whole again.
Condolences. He will be missed:(
So sorry for your loss :-(
So sorry to hear of your loss, Garth. Dogs are so loving, so forgiving, and bring us such joy. We can learn a thing or two from them. Thank you for giving Bandit a second chance at a good life. I am sure he was so thankful for the love you and your family gave him.
Garth, so sorry to hear. 2020 sucks.
Unconditional love on both parts, so few experience that!
The end of 2020 cannot come soon enough, very sorry for your loss but the memories together will never be forgotten!
“But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Masters own,
Who labors, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonour’d falls, unnotic’d all his worth,
Deny’d in heaven the Soul he held on earth.
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.”
-Lord Byron (Epitaph to a Dog)
Bandit was lucky to have such a great family. Sorry for your loss.
I’m so sorry!
RIP Bandit
RIP Bandit…
I am so sorry for your loss, Garth. Wishing you comfort & peace.
p.s. Such a beautiful tribute…..
Condolences for you and Dorothy…
You wrote about Bandit enough to get the blogdogs to pretty much know him.
Rest In Peace Bandit
Sorry to hear of your loss. I’m a dog guy too and it hurts when they die.
Oh, I’m so sorry for your loss Garth. :(
Condolences to you and Dorothy, Garth. I’ve always enjoyed reading about your canine companion.

A beautiful column and a terrible loss. Sleep well Bandit and take care Garth and Dorothy
Sorry for your loss Garth. You gave him a good life, and he gave you unconditionally love.
I firmly believe that dogs are a gift to mankind; to keep him grounded in this crazy world.
So much sympathy to you and Dorothy, Garth.
that’s what Bandit would want. Sorry to hear … always among one of the hardest times.
Sad news.
What a great pal to have over those years!
A special relationship to cherish.
Garth, I know I said I wouldn’t post again, but at times like this, it’s best to set aside differences. I’m sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was a great pet.
Garth, Dorothy,
I am very sorry to hear of Bandit’s death. We lost our Callie-dog suddenly and prematurely a little less than four years ago and it still hurts. Those of us who love our dogs know what you are feeling. Good thoughts to you both.
Sorry for you loss Garth. RIP Bandit.
Well, this is a sad column indeed. My family’s condolences to your family.

Wendi, you may have found a way – have them read this column, and all the loving comments from the rest of us who’ve “been there”.
Sorry to hear about Bandit, Garth – may you find in time another dog, just as wonderful, just as happy to be with you two.
So sorry for your loss…
So sorry Garth for your loss.
..a life’s story of unconditional love, it does not get better than that.

Condoglianze Garth, eterno riposo Bandit.
Garth, watch your health please.
Damn Dude. My wife and I are both deeply saddened to hear of your loss and offer our most sincere condolences to Dorothy and yourself. It has been 13 years? Man, it seems like yesterday.
So sorry to hear Garth. Bring tears to my eyes, even if I never met Bandit. “Just a dog” is what I said when I tried to hide the pain. A loving Dog has a unique connection with its owners. Many times even closer than we can have with humans. Sleep well Bandit.
My heart goes out to you and Dorothy on the loss of your cherished and loved Bandit.
sorry about your loss, Garth.
Sorry for your loss Garth. Bandit will always live in our hearts.
Beautifully written, my condolences to you both on a painful loss. We humans are a blessed species to have theirs as our friends.
Well-said, sorry for your loss.
So sorry for your and Dorothy’s loss Garth! We’ll all miss him too!
There is no better friendship than between a Dog and his adoptive family . All the more special when rescued from misery .
There is such a feeling of loss when they pass on to the great walking trail beyond. Very close to the loss of a human family member .
I’m very happy for Bandit that he was able to find you and have the life every Dog should be entitled to.
So Sorry for your loss Garth .
Garth, my condolences re Bandit, mans best friend has went to doggy heaven, he had good Karma to have you and Dorothy as Guardians
Many dogs are put down every year. Yours had a chance to live a good life. In exchange it returned love and affection. Always tough to say good bye to a friend. My condolences.
As a daily reader without any pets, it saddens me to learn of Bandit’s passing. What a lucky pooch to have had such wonderful owners and such an amazing life. My condolences. RIP.
Sorry for your loss :(

Another black spot on the sun.

RIP Bandit
It’s these time you see what an awesome responsibility you have and the unbearable obligation love requires.
I was going to write about all the things US election again today, but out of respect and deference to Bandit I will not. Sorry about your loss Garth. RIP Bandit.
We’re sorry for your loss. May your memories bring you solace.
Garth I am sincerely saddened by your loss of your pal. He couldn’t have possibly had a better friend and saviour than you and Dorothy. I’m sure he lived a happy life with you.
Sad time Garth, dogs are one of the best friends we ever have. Mine was Max a big tough guy German Shepherd but a beautiful soul inside.13 years , a couple of provinces and homes in the country he guarded our family from the world .Still sometimes I hear his silver chain collar jingle
behind me.
God bless you three, till you meet again.
Sorry for your loss, Garth. May Bandit’s memory live on forever. Rest well, sweet pup!
I’m so sorry, Garth.
Our lives and hearts are blessed by the dogs we love. They are our most ardent therapists- they continually bring us into the present moment, they share their love and affection unconditionally, and they bring us out into the fresh air to feel the sun and the air kiss our faces.
May Bandit rest in peace knowing how well he was loved.
So sorry Garth, beautiful dog. Good boy Bandit.
RIP Bandit. I am sorry for your loss Garth. I hope Bandit is in a happy place now.
Sorry for your lost.
He had, in you, the best of what a dog could ever hope for.
The things we would give anything for….
I’d get rid of all my material wealth just to get my little girl back.
RIP Roxy.

Rest in peace, Bandit.
Rest in peace, Smokey & The Bandit.

Sorry for your loss Garth. RIP Bandit :(
Long stories of Bandit and you come to an end. Truly breaks my heart. Just really sorry Garth. The pain will eventually subside.Take your time
Wow… Been a daily reader for more than 10 years, never felt the urge to comment before today. The post literally moved me to tears. What a beautiful tribute to (and from) a beautiful soul.
Very sorry for your loss Garth.
Thanks for being a true friend of Bandit and making sure he had a happy life!
Thank you Garth,
What a beautiful and heartwarming tribute.
The salvation you brought him was never forgotten, not for a minute.
You gave him a second, extended lease on a fulfilling life and I’m sure his presence gave you purpose and perspective you would not have known otherwise.
You were both fortunate to age well together.
Cherish the memories and his legacy.
I wish you well as you take time to mourn and reflect.
I’m taking my 15 year old Jack Russell to Gravenhurst this weekend to visit our new home for the first time. I will give him extra treats in honour of your friend, Bandit.
My condolences for your loss. It was always a pleasure to hear about Bandit.
Thank you for sharing Bandit with us, Garth and Dorothy.

I lost my feline friend of 18 yrs couple weeks ago too.
Very Sorry to hear sad news about Bandit ! You always mentioned him all the time in your daily blogs. RIP Bandit …
I was thinking of him the other day, somehow hoping he would have longer. I’m sorry for your and your wife’s loss. Heartbreaking post. Rip bandit
My condolences on your loss.
Priceless memories. Thanks for sharing them with us.
What e eulogy – just beautiful! And it made me cry. Having had several dogs over the years myself, I know what you are going thru right now. I am very sorry for your loss. Since you mentioned that you have had several dogs in the past, I suspect that it won’t be long until you and Dorothy find a new furry friend again. I know that even though I said “never again” after every loss I experienced, I always end up with another “rescue” somehow. Life is just not complete without a dog. Thanks for sharing stories and pictures of Bandit in the past. He will not be forgotten.
Condolences to Garth and Dorothy on your loss. Thank you for bringing Bandit to the blog, he made more sense than 95% of us in steerage.
I am sorry to hear that Bandit has passed away, i enjoyed seeing his photos every so often.
The sad thing about owning such a great creature is having to say goodbye.
Condolences
So Sorry Garth, I know How Very, Very Much You Loved Bandit. Such A Beautiful Companion Dog. RIB Bandit

“Pet deserves kindness”, The Province newspaper,
May 4/1987. (Dear Abby).
“Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I might lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I can’t tell you when I’m thirsty.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life.
And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun.
Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.”
Tattered and yellowed, that clipping has been tucked away all these years. Its message gave me solace during the loss of 5 of my best buddies.
I’m 75 and sit here with tears in my eyes as I look over at our 1 year old Cockapoo girl we swore we would never get after our 4 other dogs.
One of the best things we have ever done!
My heart knows how you and Dorothy are aching.
Take care and stay healthy.
RIP Bandit.
So sorry for your loss, Garth. 3 years after saying goodbye to my furry friend, (also a rescue) and I’m still heartbroken. You gave him a good life, and he gave you one too. A donation in his memory is coming to the Vancouver SPCA.
R.I.P Bandit.
Garth and Dorothy I am so sorry to learn of Bandit passing.
Our hearts are with you, as I know how hard it is to lose a member of your family.
RIP Bandit!

Such a beautiful tribute Garth, and I’m so sorry for your loss.
When I lost my Kitty, it gutted me. Still miss her every single day.
Thank you for taking him in and for showing that pure, beautiful soul the love and kindness he so deserved, and for giving him the opportunity to trust and love again.
You’re the man!
And he’s still Top Dog, just now elevated high, high up in the Heavens ;-)
Dogs are best, so sorry for your loss Garth
He was really a magnificent looking dog, so regal, such an air of independence. I loved looking at your photos of him. A gut wrenching loss for you and Dorothy. So very sorry.
Garth, I think I started following your column in 2009 or 2010. Bandit has been a fixture. Your love for him was always very apparent. My sincere condolences.
I am so sorry to read about your loss….Bandit was like our blog family member and I am in tears….he was special to all of us and he will be missed.

Sad to read about Bandit. His spirit will live long in the souls of the Turner family. All of Bandit’s photos picture a very happy and fortunate dog.

Peace be with you.
Lovely tribute Garth.
Take care.
take these wings and fly Bandit…
Thanks for that. And thanks for your love. Sorry for your loss but your words have me a smile tonight.
Strength to you and Dorothy.
So sorry to hear this, Garth. I know how much you love Bandit and how much it hurts to lose a beloved pet. Feel good that you and Dorothy gave him a happy life. Also, thank you for all you have given us not only sharing good advice but also your joyful time with Bandit.
So sorry for your loss Garth.
I teared up when I read your post and it brought back memories of our shepherd that we had for thirteen great years.
We mourned, we cried and then we got another dog, its the only remedy.
I’m very sorry for your loss. Growing up in another place I had less than nothing but always, as now, I had dogs. And they pulled me through many a hard times. Losing one is like losing a limb. With time it gets better but never quite like it was before… Had it not been for you there probably would be no one to mourn him… You did well.
Thank you for this post Garth.
My condolences on the loss of one of your best friends. I lost my beloved, loyal friend at fifteen also, back in 2007. Still miss him. But very grateful for our wonderful time together.
God bless you. Bandit has joined Homey at the Rainbow Bridge. He has been welcomed warmly.
Sitting here reading your blog with my dog’s head on my lap, I can feel your loss.
So sad. Sorry to hear about your loss of this gentle soul.
It took me all day to read this post, in small painful snippets. A moving and truly beautiful eulogy that elicited tears for a dog I never met.
He looks like a beautiful pup and so very loved by his people…
My deepest condolences, Garth. Sounds like he lived a wonderful life thanks to you, and you and Dorothy equally benefitted too. What a great match.

So sorry for your loss, such a magnificent soul. We are all blessed by our special friends.
Damn. Sorry for your loss.
Deepest sympathy Garth.
So sorry you have lost your four-footed friend and loved family member. Condolences to you and your wife.
Very sorry for your loss, Garth. Bandit was a beauty.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Only a dog parent knows the devastating impact of losing a four legged family member. Take care of yourself!
The Greater Fool is indeed a poorer place without a current moment pic of Bandit. It was if he was dispensing the wisdom to Garth to reveal to us. RIP Bandit and God Bless. You will be missed! Condolences to the Turner family.
Thoughts from the Hinterland with a glass of red wine.
We are sorry for your loss, Garth and Dorothy. Bandit had a life because of you. We are lucky for whatever time we have together. Bandit must have been tremendously fortunate, to have someone who would dedicate so much time educating Canadians about financial literacy, you know Bandit was well cared for.
My partner and I work with dogs for a living. We adopted our current rescue via California in 2015. We lost our previous girl in 2014, almost 17. When you’re a true dog person, there’s nothing that compares to the loss of your special friend. Especially when they’re a rescue. Sending out love, condolences and gratitude. Thank you for doing what you do.
So sorry for your loss Garth and Dorothy, may you always have wonderful memories of Bandit. Dogs are indeed the greatest creatures on planet earth.
It’s sad to hear of this Garth.
Losing a pet has got to be one the hardest experiences in life. Time mercifully helps to blunt the sharp edges of the feelings of loss.
Condolences to you. And also cheers for the great life you gave your furry friend.
So sad to hear about Bandit Garth.
I said goodbye to Alvin my 13 year old Standard Poodle two weeks ago. Dogs never stop giving or teaching us about ourselves. They forge such a strong and uniquely personal bond that they always remain a part of us.
My thoughts are with you and Dorothy.
Garth, my condolences for Bandit.
On the times you put a picture of Bandit on the blog, I always meant to say how handsome and happy he looked. His presence has been always felt here, and although I never knew the joys of playing with him and petting him, I can’t help crying.
I’m so sorry for your loss Garth and Dorothy.
“Gone from our sight but never from our hearts”
Sincere condolences Garth. Beautifully written. Bandit had a great life with you.
It’s so hard to lose a pet. They’re part of the family. The more you love them, the more it hurts to say goodbye.
I’m reminded of something my old man once told me, that dogs have an unlimited capacity for forgiveness.
You certainly appreciated Bandit and gave him a good life Garth, that says something about your character.
He looked like a fun dog.
Thanks for taking care of Bandit. He wouldn’t want you to be sad…
My condolences
Absolute condolences to you and Dorothy, Garth.
Love is wondrous, heart wrenching and consoling.
RIP Bandit. He was a family to many in Canada.
Sorry for your loss Garth.
I lost my good girl last year. Ugly cry face appears even still to this day.
You gave that boy the best life!
My heart is with you Garth and Dorothy
Been following your blog since the start. Never commented before. Lately I had the intuition that pretty soon you would give us sad news about Bandit. My thoughts are with you and Dorothy.
So sorry to hear about Bandit. I’ve had doggies most of my life and cannot imagine being without one. I’m sure Bandit will make friends in doggie heaven with my Mimi, Lady, Max, Brandy, Shadow, and Sophie. They all gave SO MUCH and asked for so little in return.
Garth,
dogs are spirits under development that God puts among us with two objectives: teaching us to love and learning from us.
Via the divine law of reincarnation, he’ll come back to you – if you wish, obviously in a different body.
Pay attention and sooner than you expect he’ll be back to your side. With your heart (not with your eyes) you’ll recognize him.
Be in peace ❤
Oh Garth, that hit me hard. So sorry for your loss. Puts important things in perspective. Sleep well Bandit.
Sorry for your loss Garth. Dogs bring out the best in people, tonight’s comments reflect that. Clearly you gave him all the love he deserved and he was a happy dog because of it.
It’s sad to read about your loss, sincere condolences.
Bandit will meet you when ready at the bridge Garth…
So sorry for your loss. As I watch my buddy Grendel in his declining year (likely) I can empathize. Sleep well indeed.
Sorry you lost your best friend today. Condolences.
RIP Bandit. Condolences to you and Dorothy.
So sorry for the loss of your best friend. Bandit was almost like a co-author of the blog, and news of his exploits always brought a smile to my face.
Been reading your blog since 2009 but never submitted a comment until now. Typing this on my iPad as my cat snoozes in my lap.
Garth. My condolences to you and Dorothy for the loss.
So glad that you had many wonderful years with a very special companion. RIP Bandit.
Dearest Garth and Dorothy. Your love for Bandit and indeed your love of life and each other, came shining through in your eulogy today. Bandit won’t forget, nor will he be forgotten. You have enriched each others lives, and even ours by sharing. My condolences. Keep well.
I’m sorry to hear your buddy is gone Garth. It’s their unconditional love we miss the most.
Sorry for your loss Garth.
Dogs are a blessing for a short time only.
We had a special cat. His name was Bandit. Your words about your Bandit brought to mind our Bandit.
Peace and Thank-you
Had my doubts about this group. The real group shines today.
Dogs bond is the best, love my chawawa.
You gave yours a brilliant life, lucky dog to have such love.
Peace
I’ve been reading for years, never commented, not a pet owner but I know that your loss runs deep. My condolences to you both. Take comfort in the memories and the knowledge that you gave Bandit love and a good home.
Garth, Dorothy,
Very sad news – there is comfort in knowing those golden moments are with you always. You aided Bandit’s phoenix spirit to rise from his ashes and live a life well loved.

Condolences to the family so sad take care.. dogs are angels on earth.
Sorry for your loss, losing a member of the family is always hard.
Well Garth, as a veterinarian who has put down many dogs – including two of my own, I join you in toasting the life of an excellent companion and friend. That is long life for this breed and I know how important furry family members are for the soul. Sincere condolences.
Heartbreaking news, but expressed so beautifully.
Sending condolences to you and your wife.
Thanks for sharing Garth. So sorry for your loss.
@332
What a beautiful tribute. It brought tears to my eyes.
We said goodbye to our lovely Zoe, a Springer, on June 10th of this year. Our condolences to you Dorothy and Garth. Bandit was a very lucky dog.
What a beautifully written tribute to Bandit. I’m very sorry for your loss, Garth.
From all the sidebar photos that popped up from time to time, it seemed Bandit couldn’t have picked better a better couple, and vice versa.
You two must be a wreck, yet you were still able to spin some humour as only Garth can do.
Thanks for a very eloquent and touching tribute.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Garth.
Sincere condolences Garth. We all know how much you loved Bandit!
So sorry to hear about your loss, Garth & Dorothy.
Late to the wake and deeply sorry to see Bandit has left for the great kennel in the sky. Sincere sympathies to you both. Our dogs are people and it’s devastating to lose them. They are great and loyal friends and thus they leave great voids. We feel for you.
394 comments so far. That’s more than the 383 garnered on Smoking man’s tribute blog. :-0
Rest In Peace Bandit. Garth and Dorthy, sorry for your loss. Dogs are the most wonderful creatures. I hope that you are able to look back at the many lovely years you had with great joy as Bandit will live on in your hearts.
So sorry to hear about the passing of Bandit Garth.
I am so sorry for your loss, Garth.
RIP Bandit. Nice reading about the happy times.
Keep her lit Garth.
Sorry for your loss Garth and Dorothy. RIP Bandit.
RIP Bandit. Sorry for your loss.
I saved your column for my last read tonight. Earlier I was walking my dog and had teared up thinking of his predecessor whom we lost almost a year ago. When I saw Bandit’s picture at the top, I knew. I am so sorry that this time has come. You did good by him and wrote beautifully on his behalf. Sincere condolences to you both.
Quelle vie de chien!
RIP Bandit.
Thank you for all the love and care you gave to Garth and Dorothy, a Man gains a lot of goodness from his Dog and having read every one of his post for past 5 yrs I can say you did a great job. Enjoy the heaven.
Sad to lose a true friend.
All dogs go to heaven.
Hey Garth. I know the pain. My parents were quite old and in bad shape when they passed and it was almost a relief when it happened. My pooch passed unexpectedly and I was absolutely devastated. It didn’t seem right, to cry over a pet but feel relieved over awesome parents. It seemed so wrong that I felt that way I was a mess. Layla our Boxer cross was a Heinz 57 but had the personality of something I can’t even explain.
Still brings a tear after 7 years.
My condolences to you, and your wife Garth, dogs have a very unique relationship with humans , and when we have to say goodbye it’s very hard. It’s their unconditional love that we miss when they’re gone. Bandit has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and is getting acquainted to his new surroundings, and just like the day you first met him, will patiently wait for that day to come again, Rest In Peace .
A nice memory,… seems, lucky you and Bandit found each other. Sorry for your loss, lucky for your memories.
I am so sorry for your loss mon ami.
May the memories of magnificent Bandit comfort you in time. Such sad news.
Great eulogy. Sorry for your loss.
RIP Bandit
So sorry for your loss Garth.
RIP Bandit.
well Sir Garth: I guess you can derive some comfort in the idea that Bandit is now in heaven.
And smoking man is there already.
ANd then when it’s your turn to walk on up to those pearly gates, you will be able to spend an eternity …. with the 2 of them.
does that help at all ?
Sorry for your loss Garth.
Life goes on, but never the same.
Stay strong!
Sorry for your loss. Always sad to say goodbye to a friend.
My wife and I have outlived 3 of our own so far and now carry on with our 13-year-old girl… We’ve known the hurt and and boy have we known the joys… Like us all life must pass and so good-byes must be… RIP Bandit and carry on Turners
A lovely tribute to man’s best friend, sorry for your loss.
Garth and Dorothy,

Condolences on your loss. The loss of a beloved companion is hard.
RIP Bandit.
So very sorry to hear this news – our dogs are such a big part of our family and the loss of one leaves a tear in your heart. Thinking of you and Dorothy.
What a sad post – so sorry to hear about Bandit – our deepest condolences. My husband saw you in town walking Bandit and recognized Bandit before you………he says sorry about that .. :-)
Sorry for your loss. You are a good man Garth and Bandit knew that.
Sorry for you loss. Dogs are an amazing, precious gift humanity does not deserve. Rest In Peace, Bandit and all other selfless souls.
Just read your post now …. we are so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful friend. You and Dorothy shared an amazing adventuress time with Bandit, … I know you gave him the best in all things, but mostly your unwavering love and commitment.
I explained what happened to our own little angel, Baylie … from the look in her eyes, I swear she understood. These little souls are amazing every day.
Our sincere and deepest condolences Garth and Dorothy.
Time will not forget.
sorry for your loss garth
My dad used to say that as long as you had your freedom to walk in the woods with a loyal dog all the rest didn’t matter. Dad will walk with Bandit until you meet again.
Sorry for your loss. Got something in my eye.
Well written, as usual. My condolences, Garth & Dorothy. I dog we trust…
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Bandit brought joy to not only you and Dorothy, but also to many of us who looked forward to his inclusion in your posts and on your Instagram. He’s not in pain any longer, which I’m sure is but a small comfort to you right now. My sincere condolences.
I am so sorry for your family loss.
Dogs are awesome and love us unconditionally.

Hey Garth sorry to hear… RIP Bandit.
A beautiful tribute on a very difficult day for you and Dorothy. May all the great memories of your time with Bandit eclipse the sorrow you are feeling today.
Our thoughts are with you.
My condolences
Somehow I knew this day was coming. A few posts ago what you wrote seemed to telegraph Bandit’s end. I well remember your eulogy of the dog that preceded Bandit – was it Cheka/Chaika? something like that – and how we all felt with you the tremendous sadness the loss of a canine best friend brings.
I’m a dog person too and I firmly believe that when one of ours dies it taps the shoulder of what will become our next dog and says, “You’re up”. For dog people must have a dog to hand, a companion that understands us beyond words, loves us despite ourselves. We don’t deserve them but thank God we have them.
My condolences, Garth, so sorry to hear about Bandit.
I remember my five goldens over the years with much fondness.
Garth,
there is a saying I’d heard years ago that I grow fonder of as I live, and as I age, with the memories of our dogs, past and present:
Tippy, Duke, Ginger, Beauregard, Sissy, Gracie, Oakley, Shiloh and Millie.
Our American Black Lab ‘Stone’, will turn 7 years young on Nov 8th (tomorrow).
All our pups were rescue dogs, who somehow found us.
………. “An old man has loved many dogs.” ……….
I posted that quote on October 8, 2017. (post # 77).
And re-reading it now, I note it was a posts-prolific day for beloved Smoking Man and other fondly recognized contributors, of written wisdoms past.
So perhaps it fitting, that a portion of what you posted that day, in 2017, be repeated. Here’s what you wrote:
“Be thankful for animals, and sad that we’ve apparently lost half of them in the six decades of my life. I picked dogs as the symbol of this pathetic blog. In a world chock full of volatility, fake news, mistrust and confusion, they embody good. Dogs don’t envy, cheat, hoard, boast, bully or mislead. If they falter, the problem can be fixed with a liver treat. Try that with your boss.
Money, wealth, income, financial security and a house your sister desperately hates you for are all goals and if you’ve achieved them, give thanks. Most people never will, so congrats. But they are not the point of existing, and nobody will remember you because of them. Try to imagine what you’d like your tombstone to say. Or that final Facebook post. Or, simply (to quote a cliché), be the person your dog thinks you are. He doesn’t care about your damn Porsche.”
Wow, Garth. Just wow. True then. Truly heartfelt now.
Champion & percipient, prowess of the familiar. Thanks for that.
After a busy week, I’m just getting caught up. My sincerest sympathy Garth. We have them for such a short time, but the memories last a lifetime. Thanks for sharing his journey with you.
Rainbow Bridge .
Triste nouvelle Garth .
Courage .
Sorry for your loss. Thanks for the stories and photos of bandit and all the animal photos, they are a highlight of my day, and the main interest of my partner in your blog.
A saying I heard when I was younger comes to mind “time spent with animals is added to our lives”
And another saying seems to be appropriate “it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”
Wishing you and yours warm feelings in this cold time.
With love from the Yukon. (I grew up in Nova Scotia)
Sorry for your loss, Garth. I’m sure you gave him a life worth living. Few better things can be done in this world than showing kindness and care to someone else.
I never met him but I’ll miss him too. RIP, Bandit.
what a wonderful dog. you were lucky to have found each other.
So sorry for your loss Garth, I really enjoyed reading about Bandit
So sorry to hear of your loss,
You made me cry.
Sorry to hear about Bandit. Must have been a tough day, the last one always is.

sorry for your loss

“Just a dog, of course.” – Obviously much, much more!
Sorry to hear it – RIP Bandit.
Garth,
So sad for your loss. No doubt he was loved and enjoying his last days in one of the most peaceful and beautiful places in the world. All my thoughts.
Sorry to hear of Bandit’s having to leave. We remember our dogs (and our cats) for a lifetime.
To Garth and Bandit,
The greatest gift of all in life, to love and to be loved in return. May warm memories, chuckles from past exploits and knowledge that he is well and lives on in your heart lessen your sorrow. To a great man and a great dog.
Rest in peace, Bandit. Sorry about your loss, Garth. What a beautifully written tribute to your friend and companion of many years…
Rest in power
What!?
500 comments in tribute for a canine?
Was this some kind of dogawfully wonderful creature?
Or just testament to how dumb some humans can be?
Ok, ok, maybe a bit of both…………
Our pets are our family and it is always difficult when ones passes. Cherish the memories and all the good times. Bandit had a blessed life.
What a great eulogy for your Bandit.
The tone and tenor from the steerage section say it all. Moved me To tears and I have two cats.
Garth, thank you for sharing Bandit with all of us. We are grateful for the community that you’ve created here. Bandit was surely the honorary chairdog for us all, and we mourn with you. Be well.
My sincerest condolences to you and your family. A wonderful tribute.
My sincere condolences. Losing a loved one is the hardest thing. There is nothing harder, and pets certainly count. They are a part of the family, and often the only one who will stand by you no matter what. Just know that Bandit was loved and loved to be loved. Many dogs don’t get that kind of life. I hope that when the grief has lessened, you will allow another dog into your life, and into your heart. There is another furry soul out there waiting for you.
Crying tears for you and Bandit. Love hurts, but what is life without it.
Sorry Garth…
Sorry for you loss Garth. Bandit looked like an amazing dog. I don’t know what we would do without K9’s by our side throughout life. RIP Bandit.
