What?

NOSE BREAD

So, the TV reporter with the nice hair asked the guy-in-the-street, why ya voting for Arnold Schwarzenegger?

The guy looked at him like that was the lamest question ever. “To see what’ll happen,” he said.

It was 2003 and the Hollywood actor with no political experience and ubiquitous name recognition went on to become the governor of California. Seven years later the state was spending $20 billion more than it took in, and technically bankrupt. Ultimately the Terminator was found to be a political failure who spent copious time with a second family, and paid his mistress ten grand a month.

So now the entire country looks like it might just trundle down the same path, to see what happens if Donald Trump becomes president. Against the odds and predictions (including mine) he’ll win the Republican nomination and currently is running neck-&-neck with a damaged Hilary Clinton in the polls. Her inability to bury that leftie nutbar Bernie Sanders has seriously assailed her image as unbeatable. She’s not. Now the woman looks like an Establishment shill, with the coming Trump-Clinton slugfest promising to be one of the ugliest in memory.

So what’s it mean?

First, yes, he could win. There may be an army of mouth-breathing rednecks behind him, but you don’t get to 40% in nationals just appealing to people who think their cousin’s hot. Politics is about communications, and he’s winning. Lots of Americans believe Clinton’s best-before date was sometime last Century, that her husband’s a dufus, and she’ll be a spend-and-tax, hopey-changey liberal at a time when the economy needs just the opposite

Okay, so what does this bode for us?

President Trump could be tough on the Canadian economy if he makes good on his promise to rip up the North American Free Trade Agreement. He’s a wall-building and tariff-imposing America-firster who wants the US to be energy independent, somewhat immigrant-free, cut taxes, and spend a trillion more a year on defence and other hard stuff. It’ll be war in terms of trade with China, Japan, Mexico and Korea. Tariffs as high as 45%. Trump says he thinks the American economy’s in a bubble that he expects to pop, leading to a recession, likely in 2017.

Sigh. Just when maple was looking more tasty again. This is a growing reason to be cautious, which means you should probably keep your Canadian content where it is (hopefully) – less than one-third of your growth assets.

Second, cutting US tax brackets and lowering the business rate (as Trump vows to do) would likely goose consumer spending, be bullish for car manufacturers, retailers and the real estate industry. This accounts for 70% of the American economy, so that recession he’s expecting might be a big non-starter. Stock markets will like that after, of course, they react with alarm and volatility to the events of Tuesday night, November 8th.

Third – but if history’s any guide, Clinton would be way better for investors than Trump. During the most recent 15 years when Republicans have been in office, the Dow went up 42%. But with Dems in office, markets soared 609% – more than fourteen times the advance. Over the last three decades, same pattern – Republicans 166% vs the Democrats’ 1,900%.

POLITICS

Fourth, markets hate surprises. Right now nobody seems to be seriously factoring in a Trump presidency because it’s too wingy and out there. That will change in two months after the nominating conventions, and when there’s just five months left until the general election. Combined with two Fed rate increases now expected during 2016 – one in June or July and the other in the autumn – that could make for a wild few months in the bond market. Ditto for commodities, since the US dollar will rally and the price of stuff like oil likely drop as a result.

So the only thing you really need to know about is uncertainty. It’s out there now and every week it stands a good chance of increasing. Keep an eye on the VIX, for example. The volatility index has been coasting along serenely lately, but seems unlikely to continue.

Because you (nor anyone else) have the faintest idea what will really happen when this summer ends, get ready now. The best defence is a balanced portfolio with 40% safe stuff (various bonds and preferreds) plus 60% growth assets (including some REITs) that are broadly diversified. Stick with ETFs, not individual stocks since some of them will be clobbered by Trump (if he wins) for offshoring their profits. If your portfolio’s big enough, have exposure to medium and small-cap companies as well as the large-cap guys. As mentioned, have twice as much US and international exposure as Canadian. Keep cash to 5% or less, for opportunities that arise.

Above all, never, ever underestimate the capriciousness of the voter. Hey, we got a weed-pushing, tat-embroidered, selfie-loving, deficit-happy, elbow-throwing pugilist. Just to see what would happen.

Trump may be elected due to the disgust of American politics; Hillary is the worst dishonest delegate out there, how scary; we need a COMPLETE change; this is not working. There is no vision!

Then again continue to tax and charge us more and see where that leads. To all the self gratifying political and corporate losers who attempt to squeeze blood out of a rock, Eff off, no really, eff off!

HELLO
I Believe that man, that supper alien man with the Phd in Herdonomics called it perfectly Regarding Trump way back when.

Applause welcome

So today I decided it was time to have a beer with the Great Gartho, snap a pic and send it to Turner Nation.

On board the Nissan was two cans of none alcoholic beer, cops everywhere, I’m not an idiot. I took my sons car, my old pick up with the cracked windshield is a bit embarrassing.

So I make it up to the general store on 758 Bush street in Caledon around 2:15, Holy crap, no parking anywhere, cars lined up on both sides of the road for miles, including the cross rd.

My narcissism was going crazy: Fk Yeah! all these losers here to see the Great Dr. Smoking Man.

Then I see a shit load of bikers, panic sets in, what if a few of these beasts are trans people, mad at my posts and coming to kill me before they get their nuts chopped off.

After several drive buys I pull into the parking lot gather up my bravery, put on a disguise.

Told the wife no matter who comes to get me, stay in the car, I don’t want you to hurt anyone of them. I head on in.

No Garth, very pleasant young staff, Got two vanilla Ice creams and two waters. Told the young man to tell Garth, Smokey says Hello.

It is about time for a real businessman with real experience to clean-up the American economy.
Yes, Trump went bankrupt several times, yes, he is not perfect, but at least he has a pretty good idea of what works and what doesn’t and he genuinely wants to restore what once was the greatest goods-producing economy in the world. Making stuff is what creates wealth, not providing services to each other.
The excitement of “let’s see how this turns out” in Trump’s case is much bigger than in Trudeau’s…

#28 VICTORIA TEA PARTY on 05.23.16 at 7:36 pm

WILL WE ALL BE TRUMPED? NOPE. THINGS ARE DIFFERENT THIS TIME

As Hillary continues her worried campaign to her November’s date with destiny, while Bernie sucks the life out of her campaign in this amazing bout of internecine warfare, Mr. Trump just harumphs along nicely, thank you very much.

It is well nigh impossible to accurately forecast what a Trump administration would look like or do should he win.

I figure his highly protectionist policies on trade and immigration may be subject to considerable watering-down depending on the make-up of the Senate and House of Representatives. There will also be pressures from the denizens of the shadowy Deep State.

Republican domination of both houses would be worrying indeed for US allies. But will that happen?

It’s worth looking at previous election outcomes to find that while Americans may vote in a “radically-new” president, I have Ronald Reagan in mind here, voters also handed him a Congress that refused to approve his budgets, during both of his terms.

For decades we have seen elected do-nothing Congresses because Americans know those often do less harm to the rest of us than otherwise.

While Mr. Reagan helped to “bring down that wall,” his domestic programs were somewhat less than brilliant in the result.

I believe a Trump administration will be more along the Reagan lines with room to manoeuver because Trump will simply have to.

For instance, the US is in no military-way capable of putting down negative reactions to Trump in all of the Empire’s “colonies” around the world; too many people opposing and too few guns to counter the protest.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly made known that he is a “negotiatator;” read his book Art of the Deal. Also, he has spent decades cutting deals with the world’s capitalist classes, and he’s prospered mightily.

There is no way, he would have been as successful if he tried to bully his way into every deal, most notably with some of his business competitiors in China, Japan and South Korea, tough customers indeed.

But the issue of international diplomacy is a rat’s nest of a whole different type, and much more prescient. That will be his REAL challenge.

He knows that US foreign policies during the Obama (Hillary failed here lots) and G.W. Bush years have been utter catastrophies. The Yanks have either lost every war, going back decades, or retreated post-haste from battlefields only to see the onset of ISIS, et al. Military and political vacuums are ALWAYS filled with undesirables if the Imperium keeps on running away from the wars it starts.

Therefore Mr. Trump’s footprints will have to be very carefully made, indeed.

He could no longer do a “Teddy Roosevelt,” with his “rough riders” pounding across the world in triumph, because the blowback would destroy his everything. Technology changes and desperately high US debt loads will reinforce all of that.

Meanwhile, I still say one of the safest investments Canadians can make is to buy bank preferred shares and ETFs as St. Garth of Cautiousness For All and Forever continuously stresses.

Our big banks are doubtless amongst the finest investments right now. Watch for merger talks to restart in the not-too-distant future.

If Hitlery wins I am moving to a high point in the mountains so I can watch Armageddon whilst having a cigar in a hot tub. Although the hot tub part might be logistically difficult. Maybe I’ll just stay here since it’s only a matter of days difference between the preppers and the rest once they launch the bombs. Fall-out shelters cannot save you.

Trump of course is a wild card, who knows what he would do, but hopefully he understands that a nuclear war means everybody looses. Hitlery does not.

Attacking Russia with nuclear weapons is a suicide mission, even if they fire not one missile back, because the blasts would liberate so much spent fuel. Same as no sane person would nuke the US at this point due to the same reason. Both countries and Europe as a whole already have Dr. Strangeglove’s doomsday machine, and all 3 are bigger than were intended.

If we go to war, this time we all die. If you are one of the rare freaks who has a bomb shelter, guess what? It won’t help unless you can stay in there forever. It might have been useful in the 50’s and 60’s but where we are now you and your descendants can’t come out for 500,000 years. I doubt you have those kind of provisions.

Failed businessman, inheritance would be TWICE what it is, had he merely invested in broad based INDEX FUNDS!!

“I” should trust my country to this idiot?

Hillary, smart but, not trustworthy. Look at the baggage in THAT closet. I would HOPE we can do better.

Bernie, senator for years. Votes like I probably would. Not rich, not beholden, Jewish, and questions Israel’s actions regarding Palestinians. Climate change believer, fights for the underdogs, has an anti-war stance.

So far, he has my meager vote…

If one does not support what they believe, and live, what the hell good are they?

No candidate is ever “Perfect” as no human being is either. Politics is the art of compromise, but we need to take the climate as a real issue (sorry Smoking Man).

I like my life, my sons life, my friends kids, and grand kids, we don’t want to blow it now.

If I HAVE to, I’ll hold my nose and vote for “Killary” over the Trumpster. We still have 2 national conventions, and who know what else can happen.

LONG way until November….
we can ‘hope’ better options appear before then.

Sanders and Trump have accomplished a lot by exposing the workings of the System, why and how the vote of the little people does not mean anything in an election. The elite make the decisions and ram it down the throat of the little people. The corruption and waste in all levels of government is mind boggling.

Trump will make an excellent POTUS.

Why would Americans, who by your account are killing it economically, want to upset the apple cart and elect Trump?

Things are rocking there, no recession in sight, jobs and iPhones for everyone, a Fed filled with geniuses who will surely guide the USA to more prosperity then they’ve ever known.

Don’t these people know how good they have it? Shouldn’t they want more great job creation with Clinton extending the Obama presidency?

#52 COMMON SENSE

That is a TALL order, but here goes…

Federal Legislation in the US is initiated by the house of representatives comprised of members of the 50 states according to their population.

Further, said “bills” must be agreed to by the Senate made up of 2 representatives from each state.
The Senate has some advise & consent privileges not granted to the house, such as appointed cabinet heads, negotiating treaties, and appointing federal judges.

Further, said “agreed bills” must be signed by the President.
If the president does not sign a bill passed by the house and senate (pocket veto) said house, and senate can vote and if passed by 2/3 of the joint membership of congress it becomes law over the president’s veto.
Clarification: the house & senate comprise the “Congress.” This is the legislative body of the US.

The House & Senate do negotiate (and even compromise!!) said bills before they go the President for signature.

All house members are elected every 2 years, senators every 6 years they are staggered so only 1 senator from each state is up for re-election at a time. Presidents are elected every 4 years.

And now you understand why it so dam hard to get meaningful things done! (Hope this helps)

“Trump says he thinks the American economy’s in a bubble that he expects to pop, leading to a recession, likely in 2017.”

Some reality has to be injected into the global economy. Pumping an artificial Keynsian fantasy is destined to collapse big time as opposed to letting failure and success balance one another as it should be. All the Kum By Yah in the world won’t be able to give all 8 bilion people a middle class income as the Liberals seem to think possible. When 100% taxation hits, and it’s very close now, tell me why you voted Liberal again? We’re just going to have to accept that there will always be richer and poorer, that sums up the entire human experience. Trump is for evolution, so am I.

And, and on the ‘wahahahahahahaha what a goofy PM we have’ file, did you see the goofy pic the Trudeau Liberals released of Junior and Sophie landing in Japan, what a rube says the face of the Japanese officials walking behind him as Doofus fails to recognize the Honour Guard.

B. Obama and B. Clinton have had the only two Democratic administrations since 1985. The historical returns for the DJIA are posted here.

Increases of 609% and 1900% for the Dow do not remotely correspond to these numbers.

Poorly expressed. Had Repubs or Dems remained in office for those extended periods, that is what the trend would have produced. Check the chart. — Garth

#80 Smartalox on 05.23.16 at 11:22 pm

I don’t understand why the conspiracy theorists aren’t all over this one:

Trump is working for Clinton.

Or at least working with her.

Bill Clinton appointed Trump’s sister to the US Federal Court as a judge.

Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump were classmates at college. Bill, Hillary and Chelsea attended the younger Trump’s wedding. Trump attended Chelsea’s wedding.

The Clinton team didn’t want to take on Jeb Bush, making it look like two elite families batting the top job back and forth, like duelling royal houses. Trump knocked Jeb Bush out of the race, before he was even a factor.

One of the worst things that can happen to a candidate is to be thought of as a ‘shoo-in’: if voters who support that candidate thing that their candidate will win by a large margin of victory, they won’t bother voting.

Meanwhile, voters motivated for an ‘underdog’ candidate will get to the polls any way they can (that’s why Bernie is still in the race).

Voters are more motivated to vote against a candidate, than to vote for one. This is particularly the more repellent the candidate is perceived to be. Hillary’s no prize, but Trump has the world in an uproar – race baiting, trade wars, protesters and counter-protesters? Ugly rhetoric designed to motivate Hispanics to vote for Hillary. Also, African Americans, a demographic, that still resent much of what Hillary said against Obama eight years ago during that campaign, now all the protesters getting abused on camera at Trump rallies? They’re Black; no Asians, no East Indians, and no other visible minorities.

And let’s talk about those protesters: paid actors, all of them. Amateurs, to be sure. Isn’t it interesting how there’s only one video of each incident, all the ‘actors’ are posed, centred in the frame, and in focus? How many other live videos have those kinds of production values? A tense police take-down? Jittery, and never centred in the frame, which is usually grainy, and jerky.

And then there’s the headlines: all the major newscasts lead with the Trump campaign, nearly nothing about Hillary, her emails, from this latest scandal (or any other), for that matter. I only heard about the FBI’s investigation from someone on this board.

Now there are daily polls, claiming that Trump and Hillary are running neck and neck, stoking the fire in favour of Hillary, while Trump’s supporters snowball into their own mayhem.

Of course, if the coverage favours Hillary, ‘Liberal Media Bias’ provides a cloak of plausible deniability, while putting Trump fans in the role of the victims, rallying on the defensive… and not looking too hard at who is pulling the strings.

Why Interest Rates Are So Low

#55 Rexx Rock on 05.23.16 at 9:31 pm said:

that turns the usual law of supply and demand on its head.

Perhaps Trillions of dollars in savings is why we have low rates?

Boomers have mega savings. (Count the fixed income portion of pension plans that they own as well) In order to get the smaller population of Millennials to sop up all those savings by borrowing it, we need low rates.

Low rates are caused by the large supply of savers and smaller demand for debt? That would accord with the usual laws of supply and demand.

Is anyone forcing savers to accept low deposit rates as opposed to investing their money in equities?

Yup WalMark, The American and others who parrot Garth but don’t actually think much.

We’ve been hearing about this recovery for six years, and rate hikes for two. We got ONE hike, rates are still more than 5% BELOW their historic norm. We’ve had trillions of QE, the Fed doesn’t even talk about unwinding their balance sheet anymore. We’ve got crummy manufacturing data, an explosion in part-time jobs, at the expense of full-time jobs, and months of hand wringing and consternation about the potential for a second 25 basis point hike.

Still the Blog Dogs led by Garth repeat the American recovery narrative. But yet, none of them, Garth included, can tell me why people who are doing so well financially, would, on both sides of the aisle, support in great numbers the most anti establishment candidates.

Come on cheerleaders, give me a reason a gainfully employed, financially stable, confident about the future electorate would want Trump or Sanders. Or just admit the recovery myth has finally run its course.

Not the first time I’ve read or seen that scenario laid out.
One thing for sure, Trump is way more socially liberal than what you would assume a GOP voter is.

I’m left thinking about why President after President changes, oft times dramatically, soon after election.
I think it is because they are sat down and told how it really works by those who makes sure it continues to work. For them.
Now you can go all tin foil with that thought or you can ponder the implications if that thought is correct.

Change is upon the GOP for sure and I think even the Democrats are undergoing something…neither party will be the same after this year is over I feel.

Remember this middle class thing is a recent construct, it historically has been the aristocrats, kings, etc and then all the peons. The peons would do incredible things for a bit of favour from the ruling class, I wonder if the end, end game is not to hasten the run back to historical norms, a few aristocrats all the rest of us peons.

I predicted on this blog as early as the summer of 2015 that trump would gain the nomination. I’m connected to the class of people (my southern family) who were already coming out for trump. While lefties in Canada and the US immediately dismissed him and mocked all of us who supported him, I was connected to a large group of people who feel relegated and looked down upon, and view trump as a source of restored pride. Every time that the media lied about him, and every time his supporters were slandered with derogatory labels, our support for trump galvanized.
And the media still has not learned. They’re using the same tactics which have produced nothing but failure for their agenda. Canadians are just as bad in this respect. No balance at all in our media up here. Just fear mongering.

One of today’s main problems is, the U.S. and Canada as well as Draghi-land have purveyed and then forced long-term, the “hopey-changey” thing as the grand solution to the world’s economic ills. It’s not working and never will. Ever.

People are sick to death of the near-zero, saver-clobbering “hopey-changey” interest rate policy which continues to rob the responsible and destroy the real economy at its very fabric.

so more and more votes are being based on the moral/social dimension but unfortunately often leads to frightening results economically.

and the spread of the left and right continues. middle ground is nowhere to be found. history has proven extreme versions of either have caused the deaths of many.

To complain much about paying the debt is a bit like inheriting a house worth $1 million only to whine about $100k mortgage on the house.

For hundreds of years, each generation has stood on the shoulders of past generations and inherited a vast stock of buildings, roads, infrastructure, and a huge body of scientific knowledge and more.

Collectively for earth there is never any net debt but yes some countries owe money to others and some children will effectively owe money to other children. All children basically inherit a share of government owned assets. Most inherit some assets but some inherit no assets from parents but must still shoulder some government debt. Some inherit a bond which represent debt owed by others.

I think it is fair to say that every child born in Canada today is among the luckiest crops of babies in history. They inherit a pretty good world.

So, no I don’t pity them at all.

I would wait for the brexit vote and probably get in around that time. The summer is a weak time for PM stocks usually, and with the USD going up again, the PM shares should consolidate much lower in the next month or so (or so i hope ;))

As I posted the other day,CNN reported voter registration is up 35%.
I’m November we will see if they vote against someone, for someone or just cancel each other out.

I’m not expecting much to change no matter who wins.

I have the same thought process about the American recovery as I do about the Vancouver housing bubble.

You get blasted by the media but I always go with what I see and hear with my own eyes and ears.

Like a lot of people on this blog I visit the U.S multiple times a year.So far this year I have visited New Mexico and Virginia, not really traditional tourist hotspots so a good barometer of average America.

The people I encountered were upbeat ,and I did not hear or see as much fear and complaining as I witnessed during the GFC.

The recovery appears regional to me with some states prospering and others suffering, all I can say it seems inevitable that the U.S economy blows up every now and then but I don’t see any euphoria, just a bunch of hard working cautiously optimistic people.

If Trump gets in and goes with his America first policy,I still think all the people on here that dream of working on the U.S will benefit as if it does take off ,due to security concerns Canada will be the first place they come looking for support/workers.

I’m just a blue collar bum,but this is the way I see it…

#86, you want to know why the average American will vote for Trump? Because he’s perceived as being a better choice than Clinton.

Why?

Because Clinton lost an American ambassador on her watch and then shrugged that off. If she had quit, then run for President, most Americans might be inclined to vote for her. Add into the mix her kid saying things like, “I worked for a year just see what it was like,” the email server scandal, the charity scandal, plus her speaking fees, and most Americans will not vote for her.

If you don’t want Trump in power, have some mild mannered accountant run for President on an independant ticket. Or in other words, give the voting public an option other than Trump or Clinton.

Narcissistic personality disorder is one of several types of personality disorders. Personality disorders are conditions in which people have traits that cause them to feel and behave in socially distressing ways, limiting their ability to function in relationships and other areas of their life, such as work or school.
If you have narcissistic personality disorder, you may come across as conceited, boastful or pretentious. You often monopolize conversations. You may belittle or look down on people you perceive as inferior. You may feel a sense of entitlement — and when you don’t receive special treatment, you may become impatient or angry.
The criteria for narcissistic personality disorder include these features:
• Having an exaggerated sense of self-importance
• Expecting to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it
• Exaggerating your achievements and talents
• Being preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
• Believing that you are superior and can only be understood by or associate with equally special people
• Requiring constant admiration
• Having a sense of entitlement
• Expecting special favors and unquestioning compliance with your expectations
• Taking advantage of others to get what you want
• Having an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others
• Being envious of others and believing others envy you
• Behaving in an arrogant or haughty manner
Although some features of narcissistic personality disorder may seem like having confidence, it’s not the same. Narcissistic personality disorder crosses the border of healthy confidence into thinking so highly of yourself that you put yourself on a pedestal and value yourself more than you value others.

And all this time we thought you were just an idiot jerk, now we know!

Well Herb, – that link of yours shows Harper finishing up at +1.9 Billion after 9 years in office.

Last I checked, our new elbow-dropping PM left the gate promising -10 Billion but delivered -30 Billion in a matter of a few months.

Us neandercon trolls see Harper 28.1 Billion in better shape after 9 years than Justin “cage match” Trudeau is after what, 6 months?

I know you are smarter than to think T2 will be leaving Canada in good financial order after 4 years.

From your point of view – Trudeau will be just as bad as Harper before years end. He’s already getting mad as hell at those folks attempting democracy in the HoC.

The uber-left Star had a pretty on-point article regarding the direction Trudeau is headed you might like to read.

Many Canadians are sick and tired with the status quo and now are searching for a Trump type of person for Canada. Harpo and all his harporites have forced many Canadians to lose all trust and confidence in the political system. T2 is not any better.

Just having a casual look at the situation:

Canada is being run into insolvency via spending billions on really stupid things by just about all high level governments.

The US may get President Trump.

Almost all of South America wants to incarcerate their leadership, and are in irreversible financial and/or societal decline.

Half of Europe is broke, and now filled with millions of migrants. If the EU keeps going in its current direction, they’ll all be living in caves and eating raw meat again.

All of the first world is shook, and more to come yet. If Trump gets in and starts ripping up trade deals and closing up borders, then most of Asia will be up shit creek as well.

Something tells me all these individual storylines may meld into one in the near future…

Really amazing how crappy things are all over – no sanctuary anywhere you look.

If we compare electric vs gas dryer, wont take us long to figureit out that gas dryer has 50% smaller carbon foot print. and lets not forget a fact that electricity generation is an average is only 30% efficient according to U.S. Environmental Protection (maybe we are but more efficient but we are lot more expencive because we use coal, we use wind mills that spins only when is just right windy. what i would like to see is stats how many hours in a day all wind mills in ontario are producing and at what rate broken down to the TOTAL capable vs ACTUAL per hour, day, month, year… you get an idea
