On a dull day in the office I appreciate a blog post here to provide me with either news or insight. All for the cost of nothing, for that I am grateful.

On dismal or bright days I am thankful for the love of a wonderful family and multiple pets. It’s a great world we live in, try to share it with others.

Merry Christmas, Hanukkah or whatever you call a good time. Spend a good one with some loved one(s).

Merry Christmas, Garth (and all), and thank you for all you do.

By the way, if this picture hits you–especially if you’re in Toronto–allow me to recommend Fred Victor, http://fredvictor.org/ . They’re the only shelter in Toronto that allows people to keep their pets. And if you’ve ever worked with the homeless, you’ll know pets are everything–their dogs are the only beings in their lives that look at them without judgment.

Best wishes for 2016, and to all a good night.

“6 For a (a)child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.”

#27 For those about to flop... on 12.24.15 at 6:21 pm

As I drive up Fraser St. to get groceries I dodge potholes ,when I get there I smell pot .
As I drive downtown to see a Doctor I dodge potholes, when I get there I smell pot.
As I drive over to Commercial Dr. to eat out I dodge potholes, when I get there I smell pot.

My answer to this problem is my 2016 campaign ” Pot for Potholes “(TM).

I really don’t care if the government legalizes the stuff and taxes it or makes it into a resin and pours it directly into the potholes but something has to change.
Our infrastructure is becoming dilapidated and the future needs of the lower mainland are being ignored to a larger extent.
The Massey tunnel replacement project will end up being a farce just like the Port Mann bridge and the Convention Centre.
People walk around here all day stoned, which is their choice.I would just like to see some of that potential income put back into the ageing infrastructure and planning for the future population growth.
Don’t smoke the stuff ,don’t like what it does to people but they are doing it regardless so we might as well benefit from it.
If it doesn’t work after a decade or so the government can reverse it ,just like this year when they decided they didn’t want to encourage Canadians to save for retirement by rolling back the TFSA.
If Pot for Potholes 2016 doesn’t work then “Green for Green 2017” will be a sure fire winner!

Merry Christmas Garth, your wife and Bandit. We’re having lobsters tonight & and I will make a seafood chowder tomorrow and my Mom’s Norwegian Pudding for desert. It will be a quiet Christmas this year. SIL in Montreal wanted us to go to spend Christmas with them but we didn’t want to go. Too hard on me now due to health problems. Hubby is making home made mayo with his and I’ll heat real butter to dip my lobster in. I only use real butter. None of this Becel, etc.

All the best to everyone in 2016.

Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one every 51 minutes.

?In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.1Of the 1,149 traffic deaths among children ages 0 to 14 years in 2013, 200 (17%) involved an alcohol-impaired driver

Fact. booze kills kids daily. Pot is outrageously safe by comparison.

Can’t stand t2 one bit.
Would never vote 4 him.
But he is right on the pot thing.
Here in van it’s a moot point as it is already defacto legal.

Those who promote banning smoking should know there have been 4 almost 5 deaths in the past week of local skiers. Many more from obesity. lack of fitness. Poor diet. Better call the Taliban for pointers on how to clamp down on the real dangers.

Thanks for the wisdom that you dispense on a daily basis, and (maybe to a lesser extent) for the forum that you provide. It may not always be agreeable, but (to me, at least) provides an insightful digest into the points of view of others whom I’d not normally seek out, but am still willing to consider:

‘trust yourself when others doubt you – but make allowance for their doubting too’

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2016, though I suspect that you’re covered when it comes to prosperity.

One thing I’m thankful for is my wee Wyatt.

Last year when I saw the asking price go from 1500 to 600 for that mini puddle, that should have been my first clue.

Naturally I haggeld got him for 400. He was bit cross eyed. Had millet. Walked funny. Spent his early months in a cage with a rabbit and and a cat. I knew no one was taken him. But I’m me, I had to have him.

He still likes to crap on my Persian rugs. Doesn’t bark, Sofhie the little bitch always steels his milk bones and hides them in the basement, he gives them to her the idiot.
Wont fetch, doesn’t know how to play with a toy.

Last month he lifted his leg to go wee wee. The joy I felt, like watching your first born getting his first hockey goal.

Tonight I got the snips out to trim the hair around his eyes, now that I can see them, hes still a bit crosse eyed..

I started rubbing his ears, he was in heaven. Before I knew it we were nose to nose staring each other down.

The unthinkable happend. He gave me a wee kiss. Just one.

Best Christmas Present Ever.

I feel obliged to tell you why…..when I was 11 years old, 30 years ago tomorrow I was in a house fire on Xmas day and spent the next 3 months in hospital fighting for my life.

Living out here in the trees near Bragg Creek Alberta I often see wildlife. Today I had a visit from a Great Grey Owl late this afternoon. I have seen one before here but only in the early spring. A magnificent creature. The largest owl in the world if you include the length of his tail. Manitoba’s provincial bird.
Garth, you are a Great Grey Owl in what you do here. Thank-you and Merry Christmas.

If negative or zero growth GDP continue, not even The Flash can save a stalling YVR economy…sorry, could not resist.

Localized industry, what’s going to slow it down here?

Oh, you mean just like we do for all those who smoke tobacco and drink alcohol in our society??

That’s the point. Why add another to society? — Garth

Billions of dollars in tax revenue and respect for the freedom of the majority of our citizens who responsibly enjoy a little vice now and then.

If you’re concerned with the morality of substance abuse would you support a public campaign to make alcohol and tobacco illegal?

Tax revenue seems an unworthy reason to legalize a narcotic. BTW, I would outlaw tobacco in a flash. There is no harmless smoking, but there is moderately harmless drinking. — Garth

Ah. Yes legal drugs the mob would be proud.

Indeed. Pot smokers are always younger lazy losers who have watched too many snoop dogg vids. By the age of 25 that phase should be done (along with the rebellion phase). If it hasn’t there is something wrong with the development.

MF”

You have no idea of what you’re talking about. The vast majority of weed smokers are professionals who smoke occasionally. And that’s why people in Canada want weed legalized: because it’s not worth the hassle to keep it illegal because so many professionals do it.

And most may start in high school, but they only really start smoking often in university. I recall a survey in the “Ubyssey” from 2004 that said 90% of university students at UBC had tried weed at least once in their university experience.

Yes, there are some losers who smoke weed and don’t do much with their lives, but they are a small minority.

Trudeau’s very correct when he says its easier for a 14 year-old to get weed today than it ever has been. Let’s not forget that it is just as easy for a 14 year-old to get cocaine, ecstasy and other drugs because their friends are drug dealers. The only way to change this is to disincentivize young kids to become drug dealers. And the way you do that is to get their older brothers, cousins and sisters’ boyfriends to become “entrepreneurs” in the legal weed industry in which they are being legally rewarded for their efforts, which also lowers their risks of being involved with the drug trade (i.e. attacks by rival gangs, being forced to flee, getting jacked, dealing with addicts, etc). At the end of the day, drug dealers don’t usually have a long career, and their skills aren’t easily transferable to the regular job market once they hit a certain age. If they can open up little shops selling weed, they can make a living for themselves for the long-term and society will be better for it. We just need “conservatives” to trust in the benefits of capitalism.

“On Christmas day, for the first time on record, most major malls and restaurants will be open in Richmond. Aberdeen mall, all restaurants, casinos are open in the city.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Nice try. Casinos are always open. Restaurants are open everywhere on Christmas day. And Malls started opening on Christmas Day everywhere when some materialistic idiots decided that standing in a lineup for 24hrs was better than spending it with family for a Boxing day “deal”
Most business owners dont like to lose money and I dare say that Chinese entrepeneurs could be lumped into that category.
Perhaps Richmond businesses are forced to open Christmas day because of falling revenue? Not as many customers walking through the door?
Working Christmas Day. Awesome. I’ve had to do it. It sucks.
Its not an offical holiday in China but millions observe the custom of “gift giving” on the 25th. A new and growng trend in China. ‘I know some of you will hate it but times are changing”.
50% of the population in Richmond is of Asian decent.
They’re missing out on the other 50% when they post signs excluding english. Not a smart business practice in a predominantly gweilo region.
Enjoy working Christmas Day. I’m going to relax.

Blessed are the Blog Dogs for they shall bark at the world.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Garth et al:

Merry Christmas

When I saw your photo, it brought tears to my eyes. That dog is likely all that guy has in the world. I hear so many people say bad things about the homeless…and it makes me sad. You see a few bad decisions, and you could be on the street. It is really difficult for them to get a normal life and a job.

Everytime you pass one…and they are sitting there and not causing any trouble, give them something….1 dollar could allow them to live one more day or if you are against giving them money, go into any store near by and buy them some food….trust me you will make their day…and say a few kind words…

There are so many of these people in Canada….we can all do a small part to stop suffering in this country if we can all show a “little” bit of compassion to the people who are suffering right here on the streets in our city.

One dollar will mean nothing in your life, but will mean “EVERYTHING” to a homeless person.

Happy New Garth…and thanks for all the great posts. Often I feel that I have gained an MBA in life lessons by reading your posts and all the posts on the blog, from time to time.

“Ain’t no god and if the rich take from you in this life they keep it. We need to organise to have a more equitable distribution of wealth and the big guy seems like he’s not interested (not you Garth).”

Here’s a way to organize yourself:

Every single dollar you possess is a vote. What you do with it has very likely far more effect than what you scratch on a ballot at the polls. Learning to preserve, protect and grow your wealth is an extremely powerful vote. (Do you really want to stream more fees and taxes to indebted, irresponsible municipal, provincial and federal governments by buying crazily inflated houses at this point in time?)The products you buy or don’t buy are potent votes. Get to know companies and corps. and who owns them.

Every single dollar pushed towards many small businesses, second-hand stores and charity shops not only benefits your wallet and by extension, you, it almost always goes directly to those in need, or at very least a much greater proportion of what you spend does.

Cash is highly politicized and consistently influential. It is also, unfortunately, a tool which too few elect to use.

Most everyone can organize themselves and vote with dollars.

Well, considering 30% of residents in that strata don’t speak Mandarin, it’s quite arrogant and racist to exclude 30% of those people by using a non-official language. At least with English, the language of the land, it’s a fair compromise because everyone should be at least somewhat knowledgeable of the language.

It’s sad that in 2015, immigrants of many years can’t speak English properly enough to conduct an 1.5 hour meeting which is inclusive to all residents.

And I don’t think it’s something that is unique to Mandarin. If the same thing happened in Farsi (the language of Iran), there would be upset people too.

And a profitable 2016. Watch out for Q1 weirdness.

Your greatest asset is your health.

Do not rely on “Modern medicine” which knows only slash and burn. Eat fresh and unprocessed. Exercise a few times each week. Situps or treadmill or walk your prefecture block (observe through windows everyone staring at glowing screens desperate for “information” – as book 1984 prediction). Real info comes via your own body and mind. The best computer and global human wifi there is.

Science cannot explain…you ‘feel’ someone looking at your and look up or turn around. Why. That gut feeling. That’s the connection. I’d say our coiled intestinal tract remind me of the cell phone antenna chips with their winds of wire but I’d be getting ahead of things. But research confirm lots of electrical activity down there..as much as brain’s. If you can stomach it as our saying goes.
7 billion logged in and listening.

And modern life and school spends much time programming out of us. Turn off that TV..stop reacting to nonsense. ..which aims to dis-‘tract’ you.

Merry xmas to all, including the foreign speakers on strata meetings. Deep in our psycophant attitude towards our cousins to the south, we can imagine them, if confronted with a similar situation. Which, just for trying to get away with it, some will qualify as arrogant, lack of good manners and distasteful. Our cousins may say, paraphrasing the act of the famous ventriloquist: “. . . and to our Chinese brothers and sisters, speak English mother tuckers.”

The beggar-thy-neighbour practices of capitalism, not to mention partisan politics, are kind of hard to square with such beliefs, the “new law” to “love thy neighbour as thyself”, or even the common humanity of even older religions and philosophies.

Unless one wants to prove Marx’s “Religion is the opium of the people” right, of course.

#168 learningfromyou on 12.25.15 at 12:12 pm

Thank Garth for your time and efforts educating us with your blog.

I have mixed feelings about money.

In one hand I come here to learn to be wiser and try to make a difference in my life with the investments, necessary under the current rules imposed by the society.

In another hand, I see the money as an anchor deep in the sand that we need to keep pulling along the way, and this process takes out me the time and energy of my life where I could be doing science, creating something for the benefits of the whole human civilization.

Based in the current rules, I’d like to make enough money to help others, HE knows it in my private conversations my goals about it, at the end we leave the Earth with empty hands as we came.

I found people going to church because of their fears on HIM, but without faith in their hearts.
When I go, I just seat in the last row in silence, trying to talk to HIM in the most sincere way.

In HIS name the human civilization keeps doing atrocities, maybe we could be better than that in the future.

In the meantime, I’ve enjoyed my time reading this blog, hoping to find someday the financial teacher I’ve wanted to have.

Merry Christmas to everyone of you

Even on Christmas the butt-hurt Neo Cons can’t keep themselves from complaining.

Merry Christmas anyways you Scrooges!

I don’t know Garth well enough.

It was an unexpected post.
True to the theory and practice of balance.
The balanced soul is the story today.

Thank you.

The very best to you and everyone you care about.
Which is bigger crowd than I imagined.

Like Moses or Isiah.

#178 mixed feelings about money on 12.25.15 at 1:37 pm

Money is an other form of energy.

No need to have mixed feelings about energy… embrace it, like many other forms of it, just like music, love.

Hey buddy cyanide is a plant as well. Because it’s “natural” doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

Who are you to say it’s okay to flaunt this chitty weed culture in my face? What are YOUR credentials???? Read my post. From what I see this was an election ploy appealing to the bottom of the barrel 1 and 2 weed smokers are on average annoying drug addicts trying to pretend they are not.

Enjoy Christmas and we will debate after.

Merry Christmas All
Good words and counsel year round Garth, and many Thanks. Todays are particular good. Be nice to all but especially to those who can do nothing for you.
We will come through this bleak time here and elsewhere.
Many of the younger set and some older repeaters who are defecating bricks will have learned or relearned hard lessons.
Just because people will happily and easily sell you really nice overpriced stuff you really cannot afford in the long term , doesn’t mean you ought to purchase. Especially on credit. We deserve it, doesn’t mean a thing was when they come for the keysto the his n’ hers Escalades. Truly, it has been our experience that Calgary is always a far nicer city when arrogance vanishes and humility neigbourliness and caring fir the ither guy returns after “the arse goes right out of ‘er. ” It has a few times in my time and it will again after this bust is forgotten. All the best for the new year. Now where is my glass…?

Nature “flaunts” all kind of plants and animals, creatures in “your face”.

Live with it, you are just one of those, nothing more.

You can learn who you are, why you are here.

Merry Christmas and here some free investing advice.

Buy oil in 2016. Don’t buy anything to do with electric cars. The Oil Mafia will bury any technology advances. Look at the difficulty UBER is having with the puny Taxi Mafia.

Oil Cartel much more powerful than the Taxi Mafia by orders of magnitude.

Buy Oil in 2016.

Oil cartel PR never sleeps.

It must be desperate time to use Christmas to deliver intimidation as a free gift.

From a socialist I actually like what you said!

Now if every conservative can think the way you do we would be living in a better place.

Merry Christmas to you.
