Walking the Dog

The good news: it was not my head that hit the sidewalk.

Only my pathetic, wrinkly leg. I’ll survive. Get over it. And my beautiful dog is fine, but perhaps perplexed at his master’s frailty.

So please go ahead and pick up the discussion in the comments on whatever turns you on.

And when I get back from the hospital, sometime later tonight, I’ll try to update you on the gory details.

And relax — those aren’t the real x-rays!

– Garth

(via his trusty webmaster)

WTD Update from Garth: This sucks, of course. Three bones pooched in my ankle and one in my leg. There’s a massive hard thing around my extremity that would do nicely as the main structural support for a condo development. Hurts all the time. More to come, too.

It’s Friday morning and I’m on the way back to the hospital to consult about surgery so a bunch of stuff from Home Depot can be inserted. That might happen this weekend.

In the emerg of a big-city hospital it takes about four minutes to stop feeling sorry for yourself and reflect on the fragility of human life. Waiting in the corridor with the other X-ray patients, for example, I noticed from the wristband of very distraught man next to me that he lived a street or two away. I tried to chat, but he was too upset. Once he was whisked through the doors his wife – elegant, immaculate and devastated – told me the pancreatic cancer they had celebrated to be in remission one week ago had returned with a vengeance.

“We just quit our jobs,” she said, “and bought a place down south to be together. Now they’re talking to me about DNR.” She cried, and I held her hand. “Never, ever waste a day,” she told me.

Last night a six-year-old boy came by paramedic with a piece of bowel protruding. A man with brain trauma had nine seizures. An elderly woman three feet from my cubicle died. The medical staff, astonishingly, found time for me.

Never waste a day.

#68 TheCatFoodLady on 01.16.14 at 10:34 pm

Gawd in heaven! That is a nasty, nasty break & I’m glad to see you were at a good hospital. You’ll have to, (much later) fill us in on exactly what was broken & what metal you’ve been left with to get CSA all excited.

Here’s some unsolicited advice from an old nurse. This is NOT the time to play the stupid, stoic male. At your decrepit age, your body is going to need time to heal, as well as proper attention. I trust if your doctors can’t thump some sense into you – Dorothy will. And I hope she’s okay – no one likes getting those calls from the hospital.

About looking after yourself. Lie down, leg elevated & STAY there. For a few days at least, you won’t feel much like doing anything else anyway. Let Dorothy, the Amazons & volunteers fetch & carry. You have been given strong pain pills. TAKE THE BLOODY THINGS! For the 1st 2-3 days, your body is going to be very, very unhappy with you & the sugery was a profound ‘insult’ to your body. Your entire leg will be swollen. That makes you hurt more.

Trying to tough out the pain is counterproductive – stay on top of it by taking your pain meds before the pain gets horrendous – they will take 45 minutes to kick in anyway. By taking them as soon as you get uncomfortable, each dose will be effective longer. Less pain means your body has more energy to start clearing out inflammation, dead cells from the area of break & surgical intervention. If you can do it without screaming, wiggle your toes when you think about it.

You may not be hungry for a bit – water, juice & other fluids are fine for a day or two. Your body will tell you when it wants to eat. Do NOT even think about working by phone until Monday. If your clients are as smart as you are, they’re liquid, balanced & diversified anyway; they shouldn’t need hand holding.

Your pain pills may constipate you. Have Dorothy pick you up a stool softener – Dulcolax taken once a day will prevent problems a few days down the road. If you’re cheap like me, generic Dulcolax, (Bisacodyl), works just as well.

Until you can move around, eat lightly & frequently, less gas & discomfort. Sleep may be a bitch for a few days due to pain, swelling & positioning issues. Expect to more of an irascible bear than usual. Ask Dorothy’s forgiveness in advance.

The pain & swelling will probably be at its worst late Saturday, should level off Sunday, then start improving.

I’m so sorry this happened to you & thanx for having your webmaster let us know.

Hang in there.

#90 VICTORIA TEA PARTY on 01.16.14 at 10:45 pm

St. Garth of Nuts ‘n’ Bolts;

however you got injured, and now apparently fixed up, I don’t know.

At least you can still pound the good ol’ keyboard and think straight.

That’s the main thing.

I am hoping that you might pen a few lines on singer Neil Young’s self-appointed jihad on Canada’s oil patch, specificially the oil sands, which he describes as looking like post-Hiroshima.

For shame.

The project is huge, about the size of Switzerland. Some of it looks awful but a lot of it looks good through land reclamation. Research is ongoing to try and mitigate various other environmental issues. We don’t know of their eventual total success or failure. But negligence doesn’t seem to be part of this picture.
The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers is now fighting back. Good!

Oil sands is the economic lungs of Canada until some ageing boomer hippies can figure out how to duplicate such similar income generation by flogging boxes of camomile friggin’ tea! Meantime, even those pathetic wastrells drive their cars and turn up the heat, don’t they?

I don’t like it when Canadians, who should know better upon which side of the slice of their bread to find that smear of butter, illogically join in such criticism. Stupid.

Apart from that, something else is brewing out there in the world-wide oil/natty gas patch, a surplus of the stuff due to various geopolitical trends and possible trends in the Middle East, and elsewhere, that could really wreck our economic futures here.

Lower world energy prices is what Canada’s hydrocarbon energy industry is facing.

when you talk lower commodities prices, the cure is: lower prices!

Why? Because lower prices eventually shut down production, creating scarcity after inventories have depleted, after which prices ramp and production increases; seen this before (1999 and 2009, etc.).

So we must remain vigilant to not bite the hand that feeds us, regardless of what you all may think about oil and natural gas.

Without those resources you’d be a pretty sorry looking bunch of sods. BTW, what would you wear to the gym?

#91 Cash is King on 01.16.14 at 10:49 pm

The dog?!? It is usually the cat that intertwines with the humans legs creating the fall.

Why when seing the x-rays did I remember the commercial…”I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”

#99 Kurt on 01.16.14 at 10:54 pm

Top x-ray: right arm, radius and ulna, one carpal and maybe the thumb.
Middle x-ray: hard to tell, looks like tibia, fibula and talus – and enough hardware to open a Home Depot. It looks like the end plates were ripped off the bone.
Bottom x-ray: tibia, different leg from the middle x-ray.

I don’t think these are Garth’s. To my untrained but curious eye, they actually look pediatric (no nasty comments about Garth’s maturity, please.) If they are Garth’s, it’s the morphine talking – he won’t be getting back to us any time soon.

No one around with a delete button.

In the morning, with drums going off in your head, you will be a bit frightened to venture to the comments section of the greater fool knowing you may have crossed the line.

You will avoid the site, cause you have cage fleeting memories of what you wrote.

But as your hang over dispenses make room for an other altered state you will have the courage to come here.

Ah, thank god he deleted that.

Crap! A bummer day – for both of us, it seems. While you were playing at Sunnybrook getting your leg looked at I was over at North York emerg visiting my doc buddies, enjoying another kidney stone attack. And so it goes, eh?

#127 Obvious Truth on 01.16.14 at 11:16 pm

Cat Food Lady. You are truly wonderful.

Truly hope you recover fully and quickly Garth.

Take good care.

All the Best in a speedy recovery!

#131 Retired Boomer - WI on 01.16.14 at 11:21 pm

Dam, Garth…. glad that is NOT the “real” X-ray you would be a very hurting unit. Any spill is problematic, but when you break something, be it your head, or leg, or hand you will be in pain and with limited mobilities for awhile.

Perfect time for reflection on the state of the issues!

We all wish you a quick, and problem-free recovery.

In the interim, we all look forward to being vitally informed of the details of this most unfortunate turn of events, or leg.

See, getting older sneaks up to bite us all, and remind us of our human vulnerabilities and ultimate terminal frailties.

#132 Chickenlittle on 01.16.14 at 11:21 pm

Oh wow!! So that’s what it takes to get you a night off…or did the Cialis kick in?!?

Get better!!

I think this is the first time I haven’t seen one deleted comment.

Since they say that laughter is the best medicin, may the following be the first of very many jokes and stories you will receive in aide of a swift and complete recovery…

1 – Never be arrogant.

2 – Don’t waste ammunition.

3 – Whiskey makes you think you’re smarter than you are.

4 – Always, always make sure you know who has the power.

5 – Don’t mess with old women; they didn’t get old by being stupid…

Not one single chirp.

I believe the cast of characters of the this truly pathetic blog have something special about them.

#145 Jon B on 01.16.14 at 11:35 pm

Is this a good time to have a conversation about who’s going to lead the greater fool blog and it’s cult following during prolonged periods of hospitalization? I bet Brad Lamb has free time in his evenings.

After reviewing your chart I am inclined to concur with Nurse CatFoodLady and Dr. Kurt.

Accordingly, I have instructed Sunnybrook to extend your stay.

Just one thing… Beware of nurses on the NightShift.

Tried a winter ride myself in my youth a few years ago, with the same result. Copious amounts of alcohol probably didn’t help, other than reduce the pain. Smoking Man would’ve been proud.

#182 Entrepreneur on 01.17.14 at 12:14 am

Heard the white pith inside of an orange is suppose to heal bones…can’t hurt to try…a form of protection, maybe. Get well soon!

A small business has to protect themselves, also. Have your assets (house, car, etc.) in a different name away from your business in case it goes under. Big wigs do this all the time. Consult a lawyer and/or chartered accountant for protection before business falls.

Also, with all the big box stores with lower prices But with lousy service, only give a customer about 15 minutes of your expertise and no more unless they cough up the money. Make an excuse to move on as after 15 minutes the customer is using you for info; don’t give the big box stores your customers.

I think Parksville’s mayor is the only one on Vancouver Island that recognize Small Business; the other mayors only give lip service…they don’t really comprehend the concept.

Speedy Recovery, Garth!

Wouldn’t miss the chance to say hope you’re feeling better soon, and we all really do appreciate you!

I attempted a Garth moment! I encouraged a young guy to file his many years of overdue taxes (refunds owing) instead of letting the money sit with the CRA. I even went so far as to suggest the beauty of the TFSA–I was learning, I was helping! I was making a difference!!!!
His reply??
“You sound like my mother” then took over 50k which he said was for “another house”

Hope you laughed :)

Rest up!

I hope nurses get paid enough they don’t need to worry about the cost of cat food in their retirement! They certainly do a lot of heavy lifting in our healthcare system.

One minute your out walking the dog, the next minute you are getting advice on stool softeners. Having said that, the Cat Food Lady is probably right…I know…just wait until they bring out the Metamucil or whatever that horrid powdery stuff is called and the cleaning lady tells you to get a colon flush when you are back on your feet. Get with the healing already and where exactly was your dog when all this went down?

Long time reader… First time posting.

Garth you are my daily vitamin : )
Thank-you for all your time and effort you have put into educating us all with this blog.
Sending you positive Westcoast energy and wishing you a speedy recovery!

PS I spoke to two well known realtors in Richmond (one happens to be a friend the other a realtor I’ve used in the past) both have said buyers are low balling 200-300,000 and offers are starting to be entertained. I’m a current owner (no mortgage) and am comfortable with a correction. It’s about time as it’s been very sad to see those that were born and raised here have had to leave this city due to affordability. In addition, it gets lonely living in a neighborhood with vacant, unkept homes owned by foreign landlords. I’m sooo ready for a correction and so are a lot of people I know that have been waiting on the sidelines.
Take care and a hello to fellow blog-dogs… Let’s keep on roaring!!!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Garth. Don’t envy you having to use crutches, especially at this time of year. Been there. Don’t overdo it. Took care of a BIL for 10 days last year after he broke his ankle. He tried to do too much & his recovery was delayed.

#253 Buy? Curious? on 01.17.14 at 4:02 am

Garth, I hope you get well but isn’t this a sign of things to come? All these Baby Boomers are going to be breaking hips here, falling down stairs there. Damn, this month isn’t even over and I’ve seen 3 old folks slip and fall! They got up and walked away but it’s going to be happening more frequently.

Condos are going to be the old age homes of the future. They have no stairs, nurses can make multiple visits in one stop and not much space to clean up. Throw in a gym, pool and a dance studio and you’ve got a Senior Citzen’s eutopia. It will safer for them and they’ll have all their friends nearby.

Pet owners have to be careful. I did the six inch slide with windmill before I caught some traction this morning on the the new snow. Knee took quite a twist. Dog thinks I’m a spaz. Wonder how many pet owners get taken out by their pets. Falling on your ferret so to speak.

The leg with all the hardware…

Garth mentioned coming back from the hospital last night and also it seems clear that a sidewalk fall would not result in that middle picture which in any case may have been shall I say “doctored”.

So I don’t think we were meant to take that picture as really being Garth’s leg.

Also, come to think of it, we have seen that picture on this site a few years ago? no?

#293 Sotiri on 01.17.14 at 10:07 am

Well that’s sad news mi amigo! I truly wish for a speedy recovery. I did a nasty break many years ago when I laid down my Harley. I now have enough metal in my body to set off scanners at airports. I no longer ride big bikes. If the slip was on your property then don’t worry, if you slipped on public or private property then here are my Lawyers names. Dewy, Cheatum & Howe.

P.S. I was on the Oxy for 6 months, works great but very dangerous stuff. Easy to get hooked. Please take it easy and I hope for a full recovery. You are correct every day is a gift!

#315 Steven on 01.17.14 at 10:53 am

That must hurt like crazy Garth. I take it they have you on pain killers. About 5 years ago I had a hand injury that just about took a finger off and did take about 15mm off my left hand third metacarpal bone. It slashed the tendon and skinned one side of the fourth finger. I have numb spots on the 3 middle fingers and a shallow hole in the palm of my hand that looks like a stigmata. I had to drive myself 10 miles to the hospital in a standard during the winter. Garth it hurt like hell so I can appreciate the fact that you are also in pain. It won’t last forever. Get well.

On the chemotherapy note, it is designed to only shrink the tumor and leave behind the strongest cancer cells. Most people go into remission only to have the cancer come back stronger and more deadly. “NEVER WASTE A DAY” ….. profound wisdom

If you think you have problems, spend an hour in Emergency….then your issues will be quite manageable, indeed.

Sorry to hear of the multi-breaks. Sounds like ankle & tibia. You did the proverbial “good job” on that one.

Yes, probably get some Home Depot hardware to bind it all together. Hopeful their will be no function impairments.

Recovery might take a little longer than a simple clean break, but it will come. I sure wish you the best, and now you may comment with authority on the Healthcare Delivery system, it’s strengths and weaknesses.
You might find RE more easily understood. Take Care

#332 Property Accountant on 01.17.14 at 11:30 am

Please take care of yourself and get better Garth!

Financial insight you provide cannot be learned from Certified Financial Analysts, realtors or any other source (still waiting for the results of my CFA exam). They simply don’t teach that in school. Don’t let this small incident change your attitude to “nothing really matters” “never waste a day” approach…don’t leave for any reason, or excuse like “nobody loves me”.

You have a mission. A nation to save. The relatively young ones, like me in their thirties, need your advice.

#355 Not 1st on 01.17.14 at 12:32 pm

Garth this just highlights how messed up people’s priorities are. They fawn over granite and morn and rush the doors of best buy at Xmas but don’t think about buying experiences in life. They are the only true things worth having. Stuff is just stuff and it doesn’t last. Relationships, family, friends and experiencing the world should be top priority.

#356 westcdn on 01.17.14 at 12:34 pm

Thank god it was your leg rather than your head. I have no doubt you will heal and be better for it.

I heard this piece of investment advice way back in the 70’s – don’t fight the Fed. If they want interest rates to stay low, they can do it.
In my view, the US$ is the standard worldwide despite Russian/Chinese complaints. The US$ ultimately determines interest rates worldwide as well as prices for basic commodities. So I look at interest rates on Government 10 year bonds between Canada and the US. If I was rich, which bond would I buy: Canada @ 2.57% or US @ 2.89% if both currencies were at par?
Obviously, I would buy the US 10 year. If our government 10 year interest rates don’t change, our currency exchange has to fall from par to about 89 cents per US$. Do we have a choice? – NO, because we are running a current account deficit and the BOC will not raise rates anytime soon. We rely on rising commodity prices (oil, lumber, minerals, wheat …) to pay for imports (just about every consumable product I can think of). Sadly, the commodity super cycle is taking a break and we now have a problem to pay to for our lifestyle through higher interest rates or better productivity.
Rant on:
We could also accept a lesser lifestyle but I am sure we will try any alternative idea first “because this was not my fault”. Hopefully, we can agree to work a little smarter and reduce waste; however I see few signs this will happen. I remember a quote by Peter Drucker – “there is no greater waste than doing something well that need not be done at all” – I think of current government programs that depend on our individual lack of initiative. I believe the difference between the 1% and the rest of us is that they are taught to command while the rest of us are taught to obey.
Rant off.
I think American money will leave the Cdn capital markets in the next few months which present an opportunity to buy Cdn companies with solid export earnings. I watched this video on Warren Buffet and thought it was very good for those with a longer attention span and a goal to achieve wealth through work and commitment to investing for the future.

Spot on, it’s only when you are in a hospital emergency room, you realize how lucky you are. As they say, health is wealth. Stocks, bonds, RE, nothing can make you more rich than a good healthy body.

Invest in yourself, in your health.

The measure of a man is better seen through the eyes of the man himself.
It usually only through hardship that what is seen through those eyes becomes visible to others.

A very revealing blog post.

Here are the charts up to date

Note the big disconnect between avg price and med price in To and GTA for SFH. While the Avg is rising the median is going down and that with very few sales. That clearly shows that the high end properties are being dumped as we speak. Many of them with huge discounts (~20% if the initial asking) as posted here previously

I find the condo numbers incredible! I think that they are fudged.

I’ve never left a comment before but my husband and I are loyal followers. We sold two years ago in Vancouver and started renting as we felt the market was in a huge bubble. I then found your blog which confirmed our thoughts. Your efforts to educate and inform with such engaging wit are really appreciated.

So sorry to hear about your accident Garth. Take good care of yourself – and watch out for Sepsis (did not know much about this until last year when my Mother passed away from it very quickly after catching some bacterial bug – went into her system and within 24 hours she was gone – educate yourself about the symptoms – Doctors miss this diagnosis most times)

Anyway, hope you recover well and soon, and don’t worry about the money and economy stuff for now. If all of us are really honest with ourselves, we know the most important things every day have nothing to do with our finances.

Take care and all the best.

Garth: I am sorry to hear that you were injured; I am glad to hear that you are being cared for; I am also glad your dog is alright. Sometimes, in situations like this, they can wander off into harm’s way.

You are right of course. Time is the one thing we never get back. Despite the difficulties we face in this country, Canada is still a fabulously wealthy country, and we have a standard of living that is very high compared to most other parts of the world. But the rules are the same for all of us; no matter where we live or what we have, death awaits us all and he will come for us at a time of his choosing.

Typing with your toes would be a bitch.

I carried the coffin of a fellow soldier on my shoulder into the cargo hold of a CAF 707 in Egypt……..and buried a couple of my civilian friends way too early……and a couple of years ago thought I was going to die due to a heart condition that has since been cured.

When you are born you start to die…….making every day count is spot on. People often ask me why I travel so much, it is an awful waste of money, etc, etc……..I guess it all goes back to some reason like I cannot recall someone on their deathbed telling tales of granite countertops and hardwood flooring. Memories are something you have forever.

“Enoughness” is not a word, but rather a concept which most choose to ignore in their pursuit for “More, More, More!”

Events which sometimes stop us in our tracks, give us pause to reflect upon our path through life. It will sometimes provide us with quiet time to dust off some old dreams.

Drive slowly across the continent (perhaps in that trusty old VW van—yes, that slowly!), climb, walk, swim, ride on two wheels and truly feel the bite of cool fresh air on one’s face. Feel fourteen again. Experience the magic of steering a sailboat “uphill” into the wind.

Get out from under the tyranny of “Status Anxiety”. Get rid of “stuff” that no longer serves our needs. “Stuff” often owns its owner. Spend our resources with forethought and care. Each minute of our life’s energy has value, so trade it for what truly matters to oneself. Impress oneself rather than others.

Learn to define one’s own level of “enoughness”.

Garth, your daily essays mean so much to so many of us (as evidence, feel the outpouring, of so many, in this day’s comments). May you have a speedy recovery and be riding in the cool open air soon again.

gold could rally hard over the next 6-10 weeks , while Garth heals up and is not available to ‘splain it to us an a daily basis.

Voice recog software has come a long way, it may be easier to dictate your daily lesson, rather than type

and mr herb, what would make you think i’m a right winger? i support wide ranging personal freedoms yet efficient spending of tax dollars. both to the extreme.
hated bush. like obammer. but i realize communism is a dead end and see first hand how ‘hard’ many govt employees work(or don’t).

how bout that air canada stock anyway???

We run our lives on cruise control until something major happens that makes us look back and realize we wasted so much time and energy on things that really don’t matter.

Wish you a speedy recovery Garth. And keep up the good work you do with this blog!

Ever heard Harry Walker do Walkin the dog, oh maybe at the Sandpiper in White Rock? Wait till your leg’s better, ’cause you’ll be dancing. Hope you’ll be walking the dog and dancing and real soon, Garth.

Great that you didn’t let a broken leg or whatever it was keep you from keeping up your conversation with us! But do take care…

The TREB numbers are out. Don’t make any sense. Cananybody exlain this http://i.imgur.com/TRHLHAn.png ? Source: http://www.torontorealestateboard.com/market_news/release_market_updates/news2014/nr_mid_month_0114.htm

I think that they are fudged

The condo numbers are so fudged it is not funny. I have three friends trying to sell their condo and not one of them have sold nor has any condo in their buildings they live in have sold. They are so worried they are lose their shirt. Take a look on MLS and see the same condo’s sit for months. I wouldn’t touch a condo with your money.

You’re in good company Garth. I have a metal plate and five pins in my right leg and ankle from a truly pathetic mountain-bike wipeout 20 years ago. Broke the right fibula and dislocated the foot. The good doctors at Collingwood Marine & General Hospital put it back together good as new.

P.S. – If they offer morphine for the pain, take it, you’ll be glad you did.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

#470 JET on 01.17.14 at 6:39 pm

Should we expect more posts per day now that you are bed-ridden?? (Though, somehow I can imagine you on your motorcycle even with sonotubes attached!) But, as much as it would be awesome to see more of your writing per day, wish you a speedy recovery!

#429 – Herb…

I’d show up with my best steely eyed, Nurse Ratchett attitude.

I jumped the gun, Assuming it had happened quite early in the day & that he’d already had surgery. And yes, when hospitals are busy, especially this time of year, they’ll do same day surgery on conditions that 20 years ago would have kept you in hospital at least several days.

Hopefully, he’ll be in at least 48 hours – depends on the complexity of the surgery but IN hospital there will be help for all those annoying little things – like movement.

If surgery is in the cards, life will not be fun for several days – 48 hours or so later is when pain & swelling tend to be at their worst. Then you start feeling like life is worth living again. He’ll do fine.

Emerg is truly a depressing place. I’ve spent a lot of time in emerg the last 2 years with an elderly couple the Main Squeeze & I ‘adopted’ – no nearby family & lots of health issues. It was easier for them if they had an advocate. You see everything in there – every chair in the waiting room, every gurney is a story & some people are so lonely, so distraught, they’ll blurt out there life story to a stranger beside them who looks ready to listen.

You learn to be very grateful for your own health, resources & definitely become determined not to waste a day or be too negative about life.

Sorry to hear of the fall & fractures.
Use the enforced relaxation time wisely!

When I hear that someone has fallen while walking their dog, I wonder if they’ve done something to upset “mans best friend” and the dog has avenged the insult.

… Followed by the look of “What are you doing on the ground? Wanna play now?”

#481 Cici on 01.17.14 at 8:50 pm

Thanks for the touching update Garth, we were all very worried. Your a great man, and deserve good care and a speedy recovery.

Thanks for lending support and good company to the immaculate woman, I’m sure she really appreciated it, and her husband too, even if he wasn’t in a state to show it. In times like that, every instance of humanity counts.

Do rest up and take good care, and if you need to take a short hiatus from your blog in order to get back health we’ll all understand (although CREA will be all too happy LOL). But really, we want you here for the long term, so do what you need to make that happen.

I wish you great care, pretty and sweet Amazonian nurses, lots of rest and quality time with Dorothy by your side, and hope you also make a lot of new and lasting friendships. And who knows, maybe the man with pancreatic cancer will make an amazing turnaround and be able to join his wife down South. I certainly hope so…

God bless everyone in that hospital with comfort, caring company and spectacular recovery!

Very sketchy details… what actually happened? Did it have anything to do with Toronto running out of salt because everything that sells must also be in French? So blame the French for it as they should be blamed?

Re: #458 bdy sktrn on 01.17.14 at 6:05 pm

Gold broke above the resistance at the 1250 mark. Like last year no sane person would own stocks so just the day traders and the short sellers covering are left. The money will have to go somewhere. It also looks like QE to infinity as America slides back into recession this year. A falling U.S. dollar and lower interest rates all bode well for gold. The big problem is gold and silver will both get hammered (gold and silver stocks especially so) when the stock market crashes for the first in a series of crashes this year. It will look much the same as the ’87 crash when the plunge protection team steps in and closes the markets for a week or more. Gold will initially rise but the margin calls will send gold down around two hundred dollars in a single day. Time the purchase of gold and silver but don’t buy gold or silver shares. As a side note sell Air Canada shares after they come out with their fourth quarter earnings. Their earnings should be good because of the falling Canadian dollar and lower oil prices. Fuel costs them more but most will fly out of Toronto instead of Buffalo. Air Canada is a stock that could drop well over 50 percent when the first stock market crash hits this year when the market reopens. Good advice is pray the first crash is after their fourth quarter earnings and sell it and sell all shares and go short the stock. Also short all the marijuana stocks on the American OTC market. I got short Medbox at the 75 to 90 dollar range. I’ll short this one down to one dollar and fifty cents a share. This is like stealing as the price of dope will go lower than what it costs at the height of Haight-Ashbury back in 1968 to 1969.

Garth when I told you to break a leg at your last public engagement I didn’t really mean it…just an expression man. :-). Wishing you a speedy recovery…because now I’ve got to find something else to read in the meantime. Hope all goes well with the surgery and the long waits in the meantime in the hospitals.
Oh and by the way -what the CatFoodLady said -I wish I would have gotten such advice when I broke my leg. She must be a nurse or something.

#497 Smudgekin on 01.18.14 at 12:00 pm

Sorry you fell Garth. I haven’t read all the posts, so sorry if this is stale… You’ve heard of studs right? I wear them walking on the ice. You can get them from Mark’s or crappy tire. They are uncomfortable for walking on bare pavement but you can pull them off. Some folks manage with just the heel type while others go for the full plate.

I know about a broken ankle. Broke mine at Whistler inside my ski boot! Just an intermediate skier and I wasn’t doing anything outrageous, just lucky I guess.
Get physio and get it early
