XMAS modified modified

To those who come here to learn and discuss.

To the 1% who leave a comment. To the 90% of those who behave themselves.

To those who read, reflect but feel no need to leave words of their own.

To the critics, realtors, the horny and the house-humpers who cannot help themselves. To the doubters and the insecure who nonetheless wonder.

To my colleagues obligated to review this blog each morning after it’s published and who occasionally have a cow.

To those in the MSM who come here looking for things to write about.

To the unknown weirdos who regularly send me pictures to use. Especially ones involving underwear.

To those who ventured here, and since became friends.

To the strangers who stop me on the street or in the elevator. Your thanks sustain.

To the people who build or maintain web sites devoted to bringing me down. You inspire.

To Dorothy and Bandit. F & the peckerettes. The bond market.

To the knuckle-draggers, the western separatists, climate-change deniers, America-haters and Ford-lovers, the doomers and all Kia owners.

May you know that even if your family ridicules you, there’s always  a home here.

Comfort and joy, blog dogs.

As other sites censor free speech, shut down comments section, exclude unpopular opinion.

This Pathetic blog does not. It’s creator Sr Garths alot let’s almost anything go.

As a dyslexic, bi polar, hard drinking psychopathic wannabe author, there exist no other site on NSA pipe line that allows this much experimentation.

The wit, the laughs, the chirps and great free flow of expression and ideas here is second to none.

Democracy at it finest.

Thanks Garth.

I will only say this once a year.

You Rock.

Merry Christmas Garth.

I have learned much over these past years from such great blog dogs as Shawn, Freedom First, Ralph Cramdown among many others! Garth’s advice always, timeless, priceless, and worth FAR MORE than the cost of admission that , of course, was free!

It has never been what you MAKE, but only what you get to KEEP! Minimize those debts, invest well, often, and in sufficient amounts.

Live well, love often, and remember it is those in your lives like Bandit, Dorothy, and the humor that makes the days worth while. The occasional sexy picture never hurts either!

The Retired WI Boomer!

#31 Old Man on 12.24.13 at 6:14 pm

There is a saying that it is never too late, and want you all to ponder the true spirit and meaning of Christmas. I say is there someone down the street or perhaps in the apartment or condo that you know about who is a widow or widower all alone with no family? Knock on their door and invite them for a Christmas dinner with your family as a guest, as it will the greatest gift for all to share with them.

What did you ask Santa for, Garth? I hope it wasn’t a, “cool crash in RE”, since he might have misinterpreted that as an ice storm.

#37 Zeeman1 on 12.24.13 at 6:26 pm

Garth, despite the fact you think that a few hundred tree branches weighed down with ice causing power outages is evidence of something called “climate change”, which used to be called global warming until last year but isn’t because the globe isn’t warming according to the same scientists who said it was, I wish you and the fellow dogs a great Christmas and New Years.
Those areas, usually newer developments where power lines are placed underground where they belong, are doing just fine.

#53 cool teacher on 12.24.13 at 7:05 pm

I don’t understand much about the markets, investing, etc. So, I keep it simple:

We earn an honest living, live within our means, save as much as possible and shun debt. After all, a house is the four walls you live in but a home is what you make with your family, regardless of where you reside. (And it is hard to have a peaceful home with a cloud of debt over your head.)

I have read and learned from your blog for almost a year now. Because of you, I am still a renter – an informed one. And because of you, I am learning about all things financial. I would like to thank you for teaching me. And it helps that you do it with wit and have a way with words.

To you and yours, Mr. Turner: Have a blessed Christmas and an inspirational 2014.

#55 Coho on 12.24.13 at 7:08 pm

Garth, I appreciate your blog. It’s a good place to vent! Thanks for allowing a free and wide latitude of comments.

I feel that we cannot have prosperity without freedom. This blog supports the spirit of both — the freedom to ‘speak’ and express — and prosperity through keen insight and information.

In the spirit of the greatest contrarian against the established parasitic powers down here, Jesus, the One, the Alpha and Omega, who tomorrow many of us celebrate, I wish you all blessings and a Merry Christmas!

I discovered your blog in Oct, and it was like finding religion. You redeem renters so they don’t have to be ashamed of renting. I have never been a renter. This year, I sold my Port Coquitlam condo apartment and bought another one in Chilliwack (outside of the Metro Vancouver bubble). Had I discovered your blog earlier, I would have at least tried to become a renter.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Re trees down in TO
Any lawyers on this site?
I think its time for a class action against the City. If everyone with car, house, hydro service damage joins in and gets good representation it might work out.
The main question would be: ‘is the City negligent?’
I say yes, they have failed in their duty to keep the trees properly trimmed and away from dangerous hydro lines.

If we don’t, everyone’s insurance will go up, and old neighborhoods will lots of trees will get nailed based on their postal code.
That’s what the city wants – a free ride for their insurance company. Guess who pays the insurance premium for the city? That’s right the taxpayers, we pay but can’t collect upon property damage.

Garth, your website is the only one I read daily. I know that my wife and I are making the right decisions, following your advice, warning the many, saving the few.

It is important work you do. It is not so much our (wife and I) retirement I think about when I invest (though I know we’re covered)- but the future of my infant son, really. That he’ll have an education, a business, a knowledge of investing, frugality, and money management, and that his childhood will be happy, that he will not grow up in a debt-burdened, house-obsessed family, is, in large part, a result of your writings.

Your contrarianism.

Thank you. Merry Christmas. God bless…

Getting soft in my mid life.

The temptation to post Merry Xmas using Google translator
and post in 10 languages. Then
when I got to the Hebrew fonts, it would have read. Ladies I’m well hung.

Of all the languages they would have appreciated the laugh more than anyone.

Wimped out. All the love being hurled here, I know better.
Having to play nice for one day is not easy.

So as the rest of us who don’t do festavis we all get ready to visit loved ones tomorrow, embellishing our success while ignoring our failures. We will keep our mouths shut and not vent what is really on our minds. We will be happy with some gifts, and angry with others.

And we will be happy that at leased we have people to this with.

Screw it.
I’m going to the Casino. I will give fellowship to lonely people that have no one. That’s where they all go.

All the best to St. Garth of Miracles Yet to Come (whatever that means)!

Your’s is the only Canadian blog I visit. Period. The rest belong to the Yanks and a few disparate others blazing trails to their own brands of oblivion; interesting but repetitious, generally speaking.

Only one per cent actually write to you? Must be members of that besotted group of one percenters who want everything for themselves (whatever that may mean)!

Merry Christmas, but mostly to those of you who are are by yourselves right now.

You may be lonely but you have the company in the Big Guy in the Sky. That must count for something.

I hope your 2014 breaks out into eternal sunshine and that you make some friends as we have but one opportunity on this hurtling chunk of rock, called Earth, to find some “material” happiness before we are consigned into His eternal care.

God bless.

I know have told this story in the past, as got in the elevator one day and this knockout babe walked in with her greyhound early in the morning and it was about 3 years old with a perfect coat, so said can I pet him and she told me to freeze as have to give him the signal or he will attack you, so said wtf.

Now she did a run early in the morning and some guy came out of the bushes to attack her, but did not see her greyhound and he attacked him, so we were in the lobby and told me about this all, and was allowed to pet him. Ok we talked as she got this greyhound near a place called Woodstock, wherever that is, as they have a rescue scenario for greyhounds.

She told me that her greyhound was the best she has ever done in life, as he sleeps in her bed nightly for protection and has bonded with her completely as a pet, and all is well.

Merry Christmas Garth,

I read your blog every day for insight and amusement. I implemented your investment advice but my wife overruled you on buying a home. This cost half a million bucks and three months solid of renovations.

I finished in time for Christmas. My wife is delighted with her new home and I don’t think she could have been happy with a rental; nor would I have had the incentive to customize a rental the way I did the condo I own.

She is happily cooking the Christmas bird as I type. I lost 5 kilos doing the reno. Life is good.

Thanks for what you do!

I wish you happy times with your family and friends.

Politicians are use to express themselves depending on the direction of wind, you broke that rule and I respect you for that, you say what you think no matter what, you like it or suck it.

I’m sure you will do the same again if backing up in time you work with F and has to take a decision to follow what you found was incorrect and fight against it. You are a man with principles.

There are ordinary and extraordinary people, you belong to the second group.
There are a lot of people out here that need your advices, even if they usually are like me that read you in silence because at the moment I do not have something smart to contribute and I do not like to put BS in any blog.

a little bit of utopy next.
I imagine a world without money, where people are not trying to fool others for any again or advantage, where scientist around the world work together and nobody has to rediscover the wheel again because it was hidden for monetary interests, in that world internet won’t be garbage bin where the truth is hard to find.
In that world we want to be smarter to help more the humanity because a useful discover will be applied to all nations as soon as it’s known

I’m not first thinking about it and I won’t be the last one, in order for the things to exist we need to imagine them first, and somebody already started it and dedicate a big part of his life

as I said at the beginning it was just the tomorrow’s reality is the today’s utopy.

In the meantime, and for the current world we need you Garth.

#186 Shawn on 12.25.13 at 3:11 pm

To Frank Rizzuta at 175

Frank, it is not too late to apologize for that posting.

If you want to be able to afford a house a first step might be to take responsibility for your own situation.

Also you might want to ponder if it makes sense to buy a house at today’s prices even if one can “afford” one.

Anyone who followed Garth or any other advisor should have done so because they agreed with the advice. They read the reasons and they agreed. No guarantees were ever made.

Clearly some who bought a house in recent years do not regret it at all. Others do regret it. Some who did not buy a house have no regrets. Others wish they had bought.

You pays your money and you takes your chances. Or you keeps your money in your wallet to take other chances with it. Grown ups don’t blame others for their own regretted choices in life. And especially they don’t do so today.

Really, blaming a free web site for your own decisions? That is rich.

Trust me on this one: The majority of the trees that are collapsing on hydro lines are on public property. Sometimes they are on land between the road and the sidewalk, sometimes on what looks like a private yard.
In ‘old Toronto’ or 416, the city has tens of thousands of trees on what looks like private property; The city owns several feet from the sidewalk towards the houses on almost all streets. You have to cut their grass and rake their leaves but you cant’ cut down their tree: you can pay money, fill in an application, hire an arborist and apply for removal, but it’s up to them, it’s their property.

Let me emphasize, the trees just look like they are on private property, its an optical illusion -they are definitely not. I have a massive City tree on what looks like my front lawn, but it’s city property

mikey: Have a place in Brampton and a place in Bolsover. Reading your site for years. Turn 60 this January. Hope to sell Brampton in 2-3 years and move to Bolsover.

Mikey, I’m guessing that you work in Brampton. Your plan is to retire, sell the house in Brampton and net $100,000. Then you can hang out in Bolsover. I have travelled on Highway 12 maybe half a dozen times but I had no idea that Bolsover even existed.

we’re saying that Canadians are taped out – housing is risky and getting more risky. To the point where your house in Brampton is going to go down in value 2 to 3 years from now. I mean your house might be right on the Go Train and have the best access to the Airport. But I doubt it.

Here’s a BNN video from Dec 20th called “Anatomy of a housing bubble”. It’s funny to watch because when it ends, you realize that nothing new was revealed. As well, only one banker plus one investor are interviewed. At the end of the interview, her conclusion is based on the opinion of that single investor. When Frances points this out to her, she agrees that what she just said is anecdotal. There’s a torrent of pointless news out there.
